Thurlestone Hotel

Youngest son away on a residential trip giving my wife and I a chance to take a quick break. This hotel delivers an exceptional experience. The welcome, attitude and professionalism of staff, attention to detail, the food. It ticks all the boxes. Stunning surroundings, inside and out.

Four days of wonderful service in beautiful surroundings. The local walks are most enjoyable and the Pub next door is great fun.

So much of this stay was a 5 star review but sadly the rest was so poor we had to give it 3 stars. The good bits… a free upgrade to a seaview balcony room - beautiful view and room. The Reception staff & Amed, facilities were nice, a bit tatty but it’s quite old. The outdoor pool was lovely. Cold but nice seating area around it. The bad bits… general staff in the bar, (I heard one member telling another off for not smiling!) and restaurant. When we booked the hotel we said I was allergic to dairy. Reception said I would get a specific menu, the restaurant manager said my waiter would explain what I could eat on the menu. The reality the waiter when he eventually came up asked me if I was ready to order and I explained the diary free conversation and he said oh what ever you want the chef will make something from scratch based on any of the dishes. I was served dairy. When I said to my husband should I check this is dairy free he said don’t be daft it’s a 4 star hotel and you have told everyone. After a few mouthfuls another waiter walked past and I asked him to check he came back laughing saying oh goodness how allergic are you?! I ended up paying for chewy crisps @ the bar for supper. And the bar area was always grubby. My husband found half a chewed sweet on the arm of his chair! The spa - for £180 for two treatments you wouldn’t expect the staff to turn up late & then feel rushed. We also then missed our lunch reservation ( somewhere else!) The Village inn isn’t great. But the reception staff recommended the Sloop which was fab! The indoor pool was lovely the hot tub didn’t work fully and there was no staff to be seen anywhere so you can imagine there was plenty of jumping in and diving! Book a sea view balcony room and use it as a base and it’s a great spot!

What a treat! We finally found a UK hotel that ticks all the boxes. Having stayed in some of the best, this outclasses the Ritz and Savoy on many accounts. Excellent staff who are many, unfailing lovely and competent, delightful food that is served swiftly, a graceful and tastefully decorated interior matched by beautiful grounds which are lovingly tended and a stylish, yet relaxing spa. Two aspects were really notable though: the really thoughtful touches for children (like gift packs in rooms including eco friendly crabbing lines and little fleece dressing gowns) and the number of repeat guests, many of whom brought a multigenerational family, as this hotel does truly cater for all ages. Owned by the same family for over 100 years the care and attention to detail this brings is marked and so refreshing compared to chain hotel brands. Well done all at Thurlestone and thank you.

We (a group of 9) dropped in just for coffees and hot chocolates on a walk. The staff were so friendly and the bar-man made the experience for us. He was chatty, friendly, helpful and accommodating of our requests. We will definitely be going back for dinner here! Lovely decor in the bar area as well.

Delightful stay in a beautiful hotel in a superb location. Lovely welcome, wonderful staff service, nice food, fabulous views and excellent facilities.

Wow, this hotel is amazing. Beautiful location, stunning views, two amazing pools and wonderful friendly service from everyone. The food was also superb. Absolutely faultless and we would highly recommend. Our two children loved it. As did we. We will be back!

We stayed at Thurlestone for a weekend and it was such a lovely time. The staff here are incredible, they are attentive and will go above and beyond to make sure your stay is excellent. The location is perfect, you can walk down to some beautiful beaches, or drive over to Salcombe for a day. Or there was plenty to do at the hotel. The golf course was perfect for me and my partner (he loves golf and I do not) as it was not too long. The pools are both lovely and clean. The spa facilities are really nice and they are for adults only, which makes them nice and peaceful! The food is outstanding, dinner is the highlight of the day! Each night the menu is different and offers something for everyone. The waiters are really lovely, and help make the dinner experience really special. We would 100% recommend.

We were lucky in being blessed by wonderful weather. The hotel has excellent amenities, eg large outdoor swimming pool with Terrace Bar, newly renovated tennis court, golf and a children's Play Room.It is in a stunning location, with beautiful views of the bay and Rock from the restaurant and sea facing balconies. The hotel is very close to the beautiful South West coast path; South Milton NT beach and Bantham, can easily be walked to by adults and older children. The shortish lane walk to the coast is narrow, and can be busy. It is safer to take young children to the beach by car, even if the lanes to them can again be narrow.
