The Stag at Stow

Fantastic stay - our room was outside in the Potting Shed. Thoroughly recommend this little hideaway. Staff very friendly and helpful - we had dinner on two nights, simply because it was the best food we had in Stow The pie for two was an absolute belter and you could see others asking what we were having. Well priced drinks, lovely warm almond croissants at breakfast. Thoroughly recommend

Four of us had lunch which took 40 minutes to appear. The house ravioli was OK. I had fish and chips. The fish was dry and overcooked and the mushy peas weren’t . My wife’s Caesar salad was a small portion of a few leaves of Romaine lettuce with formulaic dressing, Parmesan and unfresh croutons. One our party had beetroot, orange and blue cheese with hazelnuts. Virtually non-existent blue cheese and a minute sliver of orange. You might wonder why we didn’t say anything but we were getting together having not seen each other for quite a while and would have found it awkward and spoiled our mood. In addition the lunch was rather expensive to say the least

We came from Reading to the stag at stow. I booked online before coming which I would 100% recommend as it is super busy! We had the ham hock, chicken and leek pie and it was the best pie I have ever had. The pastry was thin, cooked to perfection and the flavours were incredible. We also had a drink in the bar, I was recommended the wildflower cotsworld gin, I hadn’t had it before and because of the staff recommendation - I had it all weekend! I really am so pleased with the Stag at Stow, and I really am sure we will return again, this time with our families. A real diamond of a pub.

We couldn't have been happier with our choice of The Stag at Stow. Our criteria: clean, simple, modest lodgings at a modest price; beautiful surroundings and eateries; and convenient public transportation. We were thoroughly satisfied on all counts, and enjoyed the genuine hospitality of the staff. The town of Stow is fascinating itself, and we easily figured out the bus schedule to hop around to other historic villages of the charming Cotswolds and to hike the ancient trails through the grazing flocks of sheep! Thanks to our hosts for a wonderful visit.

Arguably the best roast beef we’ve had during our Cotswolds trip. We also appreciated the fact that the kitchen was open somewhat in between peak dining hours. The staff are friendly and have outstanding sense of humour and make you feel really welcome.

Unfortunately we found that the promised accessible room was not. Apart from the door being wide enough to get through there were was no provision for a disabled person-all hand rails had been removed in the shower cubicle and from by the toilet. It was too late to try and find alternative accommodation so we spent the night there (no price reduction offered). We used chairs around the toilet and our daughter was unable to shower. The pub itself was only accessible by a back door and there was no accessible toilet. The staff were as helpful as they could be in the circumstances and the food was good in the pub. The chef was helpful providing for a special diet.

Had a pleasent enough lunch - one main and two small plates/starters between 3 of us. Pinot Grigio at £38 plus 12.5% a bit steep I thought but I think it was organic. £105 inc service bit steep but it is a touristy area. Can’t argue with their business model but I think I’ll ask for the wine list next time and get my drinks at the bar!

Lovely location but unfortunately our room was incredibly uncomfortable and shouldn’t really be rented out. Bed pushed right up against sloping ceiling, no room for anything in the room, so much so the kettle is on the floor. It was hot when we stayed and the heat in the room was just crazy, I’d say the roof isn’t insulated. Breakfast was included in price but rather sneakily they charge if you order a cooked breakfast - two stars for the location and some of the staff were friendly.

We stayed here with our 6 year old granddaughter and I requested a room with a separate bed for her. They really delivered on that for me. Room 11 was perfect. 2 single beds as you walk in one with a telly on the wall. Up 2 steps and you are in the main room. A lovely roll top bath in the room with a gorgeous comfortable bed. A good hospitality tray with a coffee machine. The room was in the loft and was really quiet and peaceful. We ate in the restaurant and it was superb. We both had the fish and chips which were excellent and our granddaughter had penne pasta followed by ice cream. The guy that checked us in Zac was very helpful and pleasant. The guy in the restaurant front of house you were great. 👍 The breakfast was included in the price and was continental, plenty to choose from and you have the option to purchase from the menu. All the staff were lovely. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
