Our experience with Val D’Or Estate left us shocked and deeply concerned. Shortly before our planned stay, there was a terrifying violent incident on the property in which a couple were tied up, stabbed, robbed, and left for dead. Understandably, this raised serious safety concerns — particularly as we were traveling with young children and elderly relatives. Despite advertising “24-hour security,” it became apparent that at the time of the incident no on-site security was present at all. When we contacted the property to express our fears and request a cancellation for safety reasons, our request was flatly refused. The response we received made it clear that protecting revenue mattered more than protecting guests. We immediately made alternative arrangements in the Devon Valley, where the staff were appalled by Val D’Or’s indifference and assured us that guest safety was their top priority — a stark contrast to our experience. It is profoundly disappointing that a property would prioritise profit over people, especially in such serious circumstances. Until genuine security measures and guest welfare become their focus, I strongly advise others to avoid Val D’Or Estate at all costs.

We were awoken at 1:30 in the morning by 3 African men. I was stabbed twice tied up and all my possessions stolen. My partners bag and phone were stolen. We were tied up then locked in the room. We managed to get free then breakout of the room. No 24 hr security reception was locked so we broke into the reception. No alarm the phone did not work because you needed the security code. We eventually got assistance from some people that live on the estate. It was an absolutely horrendous experience.

A perfect room/apartment for our family. Franschhoek is absolutely beautiful and this estate was the perfect place to stay for our family. Lovely surroundings, great pool and great breakfast on the terrace.

We had a large room and bathroom on the first floor in the main building and a huge deck with beautiful mountain views. The breakfast was delicious and could be eaten inside or out on the terrace. The pool area was great for sitting out in the sun or under the trees or umbrella for shade. The accommodation is a little out of town but we had no difficulty in accessing an Uber at a reasonable rate. The staff were helpful throughout and my partner and I had a wonderful 7 night stay at the Val d'Or

Wonderfully spacious rooms, comfy beds and well appointed. Location close to everything in Franschoek and very pretty surroundings. Staff super friendly and a tasty breakfast.
