HISTORY
Duncans Mills has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. It was originally known as "Sullenger's Sawmill" after its founder, Alexander Duncan, who established a sawmill there in the 1870s. The mill provided lumber for the growing communities of San Francisco and the surrounding area during the California Gold Rush.
In 1877, the town was officially named Duncans Mills in honor of its founder. The town thrived as a bustling hub for timber and agricultural industries, with several mills, a general store, a hotel, and other businesses catering to the local population and travelers passing through.
Duncans Mills played a significant role in the region's economy until the early 20th century when changes in transportation and industry led to a decline in its importance. However, the town managed to maintain its historic charm and picturesque setting, attracting tourists and preserving its heritage.
Today, Duncans Mills is a popular destination for visitors seeking a glimpse into California's past. The town boasts well-preserved historic buildings, including the Blue Heron Inn, the historic Duncans Mills General Store, and the Christopher Queen Galleries, which showcase local art and history.
