Royal Victoria Hotel
"The sea view room has a great view and a small loft. The price/performance ratio is really high, you can walk right to the beach, and the nearby restaurants and sightseeing spots are all good! My boyfriend said it was the first time in the UK that I could live in such a big room at such a cheap price. The room is relatively old, but to be honest, all buildings in the UK are like this, they are hundreds of years old."
The Bank Hotel & Bistro
"Hotel staff were rude and unfriendly. Rooms are only for one person, they will charge extra for an extra person. Nice room, good amenities and great location otherwise. There was dirt on the carpet"

Tower House 1066
"Not so long ago, I stayed at the Tower House Hotel 1066, in St Leonards. In all the time I have been travelling (and that is a good many years!) I cannot recall ever having left a negative review of a hotel or guest house, where I have stayed. It is not something I like to do. However, the Tower House Hotel, definitely deserves one. The worst part was that they tried to charge me for something I had already paid for and I have come to the view, their action, was deliberate. I had made a direct booking and this was done online. Initially, I paid a £50.00 deposit and that was fine - no issue there. Upon arrival at the hotel, I was due to pay the balance due and that is what I did by way of my credit card. Curiously, I was told, when the payment went through, that no receipt was possible from the card machine. I then asked for a hand written receipt and my request was met with silence. I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and later, checked my credit card account online. I could see the payment had gone through, so left it at that. However, on the day of departure and later that day, I received an email from the hotel requesting that I pay the balance due and that it be done immediately via a link they included with the message. By reply. I advised them I had paid the amount upon my arrival at the hotel. Additionally, I sent a screen print from my credit card account, which clearly showed a named payment made to the hotel for the exact amount due. I later received a very brief reply from the hotel basically saying a receipt would be sent to me. No receipt ever arrived and I chased a number of times for it. Each time I sent a chase message, it was ignored. I think this shows what they must think of the customers. Clearly, the hotel thought I would pay twice but I don't fall for that kind of trick. In regards to the room I had, it was very small and some would say, cramped. I doubt there was enough room to swing a cat. The cleaning wasn't great as there was dust in some corners, I had to deal with a few spiders - a couple of which were in the recessed wardrobe (certainly not where you want to find any!) and a few high up near the ceiling, and in my time there, the shaver light in the toilet/shower room didn't work, the showerhead, which fitted into an alarmingly wobbly attachment on a plastic pipe, attached to the wall, looked like it may come apart almost at any moment, a neighbour next door decided to play his guitar, at times and my room (which overlooked the back and the rear seating / garden area of the hotel) had on one warm night, people talking loudly until just before midnight - no early night for me on that occasion. To top it all, one day, I even found a grass hooper in the shower cubicle - it went for a swim down the toilet. I had stayed for a few days last year and decided to give the hotel another go. I worked on the assumption that things may have improved but it was not the case. In fact, th"

Hastings House
"I arrived to find the building dark and a note on the door telling me to call for entry. I spoke to a lady who explained the owner had been called away on a family emergency and the b&b was unattended. I got the key via the key box and found my way to my room on the second floor. As a lone traveller I was already very uncomfortable with the whole set up but even more so to find my bedroom door wide open for anyone to gain access! The room itself was adequate but no hand soap or mini bar and it was utterly freezing! I called again and was told I’d need to go downstairs and put the heating on myself. I was already dressed for bed but I was too cold to relax so I got dressed and went in search of the thermostat which was located in reception. Another couple arrived into the building and they assisted me as we couldn’t even find the lights. The thermostat had been left at 15 so obviously they had ensured the guests would have no heating all night. The next morning I came downstairs for breakfast to be asked whether the heating had come on when I said it hadn’t the lady retorted that the rest of the hotel was like a sauna when she arrived in the morning - lucky them! Breakfast was full English, poached eggs or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. I prefer a lighter breakfast, fruit and perhaps a pastry but this wasn’t an option so I went for the poached eggs. Pretty hard boiled unfortunately but the coffee was good. Finally when I came to leave and pay, the card machine was broken so I was asked to leave my card number, including the three digit security number. I quickly realised I’d made a silly mistake doing this and had to cancel my card, later making arrangements for a bank transfer into the owners personal account (upon their request!) I’m felt like I’d spent a night at Fawlty Towers to be honest. As a business traveller, my safety is a priority and this place failed on so many levels. When emergencies happen, the business owner should have a contingency plan, not leave guests to fend for themselves!"
