The Manor House Celeirós ★★★

"Wonderful fusion of modern convenience and old world charm. Ambiance is one of calm and peacefulness. Beautiful setting amongst meticulously manicured vineyards sweeping over the rolling hills of the Alto Douro. We stayed one night in the main building while touring the Douro Valley. The 20 minute hairpin drive from Pinhao to Celeiros includes some of the best vistas in the Douro Valley. Our room was clean, comfortable, nicely decorated and with good comfortable bed and plenty of hot water in the large walk in shower. Public areas were beautiful with stone walls from the original structure, high vaulted ceilings and antique furnishings. We didn't eat dinner at the separate Restaurant which seemed a bit too nouveau cuisine for our simple tastes. Breakfast buffet was OK, but we didn't learn until afterwards that the only hot dish, poached eggs, were only available upon request. Replenishment of the buffet was slow and some items were gone by 9:00 am. Nevertheless I would highly recommend The Manor House for your Douro Vally trip."

"Our bedroom was lovely with beautiful shower, bed and furnishings. Delightful food and wine. Waking up to breakfast in the serene dining room and attentive service, comfortable seating--no need to go anywhere else--this is the place to bring good books and to be. Enjoyed meandering towards the lake on friendly pathways where the light and view changed constantly. Wine tour was fun & impressive. I must go back to try the very inviting swimming pool. Thank you!"

"Our travel consultant, Tour Tailors, booked us into Morgadio da Calcana for two nights of a 14 night, you-drive, independent tour of Portugal. Of all the very nice hotels we stayed at, this stood out as our most memorable. This is a small, boutique hotel with a handful of modern, sparsely decorated but elegant en suite guest rooms created out of the stone sheds and out buildings of the main manor house with its 20’ high ceilings that dates back to this family’s original ownership in 1610. What made this so special for us was the personal involvement of the owner, Manuel and his daughter and sons, the totally relaxing atmosphere of the Morgadio da Calcana vineyards that surround you, and the superb candlelight, four course dinners with wonderfully paired ports and wine (which you can buy and have shipped home) from their very own grapes. It was a little hard to find as it is way up in the hills above the Douro Valley, but the drive there was incredibly beautiful. On arrival, once you locate the inauspicious doorway (it took us almost 10 minutes to locate it) and step through the beamed portal, you enter another world. You won’t be sharing this secret with a bus load of tourists. This is a special place that you should go out of your way to experience."

"It's a nice, small hotel, the decoration is modern and the room was very clean. A little bit outside the village, you can look from your window at the center. As we made an 7-days walk along the river Douro, we were very lucky to have a meal in the house. The mother of the owner cooked a delicious tasting meal for us. So that was a really wonderful surprise."

"Beautiful location. If you stay there is a complimentary tour of the wine making facilities. We had dinner at the restaurant which was packed... Food was above average but our medium t-bone was more of a medium well done. Swimming pool was cool and relaxing as it over looked the river. Suggest a minimum stay of 2 nights so that you can explore the town, river walk and vineyard walk."
