This resort has to be one of the most beautiful locations I have ever been to and I travel often. Surrounded by protected rainforest and mountains with a massive beach that goes for miles. It’s truly heaven on earth. The resort itself is ok, the rooms are probably a 3 star and the food was 3.5. The restaurants are great but the package only includes 3 nights and the rest have to be at the buffet. Definitely not a place to party, everything shuts down early, but if you are into nature and beaches you’ll be hard pressed to find a better spot anywhere. While the accommodations aren’t up to what I’d usually pick the destination itself Mae’s it well worth while. I look forward to my next visit to this slice of pure paradise.

I think this hotel’s reviews don’t quite reflect what it truly offers. While there are definitely areas that could use improvement, there are also many wonderful aspects that make it worth visiting. Before my arrival, I had some difficulty getting through on the phone, I called many times before finally reaching someone. Thankfully, when I did, I was connected to Brandon from Guest Services, who completely turned things around. Had he not helped us probably my review would have been poor. Brandon went above and beyond to make sure our stay was pleasant and smooth. He was always attentive, no matter how many times I reached out with questions or small issues. It’s people like Brandon who make you feel that even though you’re far from home, Barceló could truly be your home away from home during your stay in Costa Rica. We also had a great experience at the buffet. When the soda machine wasn’t working, the manager Dagk personally brought us drinks, a small gesture, but one that made a difference. Dagk also was covering as waiter during our dinner at Miyako and he was spectacular. Our server, Juan Carlos, was fantastic. We happened to get him several times for breakfast and dinner, and he was consistently attentive, kind, and welcoming. The food overall is what you’d expect from a standard all-inclusive hotel, not gourmet, but not bad either. If you make the right selections, you’ll find plenty to enjoy. One note of caution: I would avoid the raw fish, as it didn’t sit well with me. The rooms are simple and the bathrooms could use some updating, but everything was clean and comfortable, which is ultimately what matters most. We didn’t expect luxury accommodations, and for what it is, the rooms met our expectations. At the pool area, guests tend to get up early to reserve seats, typical for resorts, and not something I think the hotel needs to change. The poolside entertainment is upbeat, with fun and lively music. If you prefer quiet relaxation, it might not be your style, but for us, it added to the enjoyment, and it was nice to see everyone around having a good time. Overall, I would definitely come back. The hotel grounds are beautiful, and while you shouldn’t expect a luxury experience, you can expect basic comfort in a stunning setting. For a few relaxing days in Costa Rica, Barceló Tambor is a lovely choice.

From the UK stayed 10 nights with 2 boys aged 11 and 9. It is clearly not a 5 star hotel but then we paid 3 star prices so that was expected. The maintenance and cleaning staff work hard to make the place look good but I feel there are some areas being overlooked such as the sunbeds. The grounds were beautiful and probably up to that of a 5-star hotel. The food and service was the standard I expected for the price we paid - we enjoyed all our meals despite a few slight issues. The steak restaurant was really good but the booking system for the a la carte's needs looking at as you need to queue for about an hour before 8am to book a table. We did find our room to be dirty on arrival with a coconut shell and apple core under the beds but superficially clean. Yes the rooms are run down and need refurbishing but I think this is reflected in the price. We would be nice to have a family room option with bunk beds instead of two doubles. The facilities were pretty good including tennis, football, lovely pool, gym, bird sanctuary, archery. But it was disappointing kids could not use kayaks with an adult. Our children couldn’t engage with the kids club as all in Spanish, which we don't speak. The beach was better than we were expecting - lovely for a nice walk around the cove. It's a shame they haven't cleared some or all of the stones, which looked like it could be done without harming the environment / erosion protection. Some members of staff were really lovely - sorry I don’t have names but the chef and main barmaid in the snack bar were both excellent as was the ‘beer’ man in the buffet. However as non- Spanish speakers we struggled to engage with the animation team. The hotel is 99 percent Spanish speaking guests. Everything was in Spanish only and this was a surprise as everywhere else in Costa Rica everyone we encountered spoke good English. I think Barcelo should make this clear when marketing the hotel internationally. Also the place was completely different during the quieter midweek compared to when hoards arrived for the weekend! It did make a lovely restful end to our Costa Rican adventure.

Grounds and pool area were beautiful and well kept. Rooms were the worst we have ever stayed in. Dirty, bugs such as cockroaches, spiders, and ants in our rooms. Hair on the sheets and pillowcases, rust and mold in the bathroom, leaky pipes, stains on the walls, curtains, and a general feeling of neglect and disrepair. Our complaints to staff took multiple attempts as well as our tour guide advocating on out behalf before they moved us to another "better" room which was only mildly cleaner and still had the same above host of issues. The all inclusive food including the free drinks were plentiful but not great. It is a shame because the outdoor setting is very beautiful as it is right on the ocean, and they have a lot of activities going on throughout the day. It advertises as a 5 star resort. Nothing about the rooms gives you a resort feel. We stayed there as part of a Caravan Tour for three long nights. It really negatively affected our feelings about the tour as a whole, which was unfortunate.

We were invited by neighbors to join them. The stay was exceptional and will definitely recommend to our friends and neighbors. A simple Thank You doesn't seem to be adequate.

Do not go to this place for a vacation. Let me get straight to the point: 1) Service was terrible, room check in states 3pm, it was 3:45pm and I still couldn’t get in. They said we have a lot of rooms to clean. By the time I got in there the room was still wet yet the bathroom was still dirty. Apparently it took 45 min to slap water in the floor. 2) The rooms are overpriced and dated, it felt like going back to the 80s. 3) The food was like jailhouse food. They call it buffet, I call it leftover scraps that no one would eat if they had other options. The lunch menu had all these things listed, yet the only thing you could order was a burger that didn’t taste like burger meat. Again, don’t go here / I’m saving you from a nightmare. I went to the restaurant at night, they said I need a reservation. I asked how would I know that if no one told me, she said front desk should have told me and you need to make it before 8 the previous night. Well, how can I now that it is past 8 and that means the next day is also out of the picture. They send me to the buffet restaurant, I puked all night. 4) Entertainment was crap. Apparently you would only come here if you are broke. You are better off going to Cancun. Alcohol menu was nonexistent, it was 3 bottles of crap with bartenders that had 0 experience. The place is an overpriced scam. I left early because I would rather lose the money instead of feeling like I was in a prison. It’s a shame because I love costa rica but this place is not a great representation of Costa Rica. It was a robbery of the soul. Listen to me clearly - you are better off staying home and saving for a vacation that is worth your hard earn money. I’ve travelled the world and I’ve stayed at hostels, 2 stars, 3 stars, 4 stars and 5 stars hotels. This gets no star. It was hell! A place that you will never dream of! Don’t come!!!! STAY AWAY!!! If you’ve travelled before, I’m telling you don’t come! The picture is to prove I was there not to prove it was worth it!

We came to this location with the touring company, CARAVAN. Overall, pretty good. Was a bit disappointed at the small size of the gym. The restaurant, on occasions, was invaded by squirrels (getting on the table and getting into people's food while they would be away) and the hotel personnel were not aggressive enough to get rid of them. That was VERY annoying and should be fixed.
