Yusaya Ryokan

"This is such a great way to experience the quieter and more traditional side of Japan. The Yusaya Ryokan was incredibly welcome to us and our two elementary school kids, none of whom can speak Japanese except for the basic "please" and "thank you." The room, a traditional tatami one, is set up first with a table and then the staff remake it with futons. Thankfully despite the traditional layout, there is plenty of AC in each room. The included dinner and breakfast were lavish (we felt bad wasting so much food but there was more than we could possibly eat) and while not particularly child friendly to the picky eater, included rice and other basics to get them by. The Onsen nearby are available for your use - a men's/women's one in the Ryokan itself, plus a public one right next door and an open-air one across the street. We tried them all and each had its own charm. Don't miss a chance to leave the big city tourism and enjoy the hospitality Yusaya Ryokan has to offer."

"This is an inn that I wanted to stay at someday when I used it for a day trip before the coronavirus pandemic. As with all inns in Naruko, you can stay at a low price and the quality of the spring water is good. If I have time, I would like to try the hot spring treatment. The outside of this inn is old and looks bad, but the inside was very clean and I didn't feel any discomfort. All of Naruko's inns have unique hot springs, but the one that impressed me the most was the private open-air bath outside. It was filled with the feeling of a secret base and tickled my childish mind. The food was delicious and I was very satisfied with my stay for 1 night and 2 days. The owners of the inns are very friendly and I'm starting to find more inns that I want to stay at again."

"This hotel is perfect for road trips. It has a ski resort, an indoor hot spring, and a newly renovated outdoor hot spring. There is also a small library where you can relax and have children read books. The outdoor area has a foot bath and you can use the snow bags provided by the hotel free of charge."

Naruko Onsen Ryokan Kanshichiyu

"I thought I was prepared based on reviews on travel sites, but I was wrong. It was worse than I expected, in a bad way. I'm not particularly sensitive, so I thought I'd be able to manage, but I regretted it the moment I arrived. The entrance is the first thing guests see, and there was a pile of paperwork there. (It was piled high, like something out of a comic book, and it felt like it would collapse if even the slightest movement were to happen.) The front desk also only had a small amount of space available for the piles of paperwork, so even things like bathing tax payments had to be handed over in person. (There was nowhere to put them.) The tatami mats in the room were so dirty that even moving clothes or bags would get covered in crumbs. The futon was made of rice crackers. There were no tissues provided, so I had to bring my own pocket tissues (maybe there were some somewhere, but maybe I just didn't notice). Of course, if this was for around 6,000 yen with two meals included, I wouldn't have any complaints, but it was 9,350 yen. I had just stayed at a much cleaner inn with delicious food for just under 9,000 yen a few days earlier, so it was even more unacceptable. The toilet in the room was just barely normal, so I managed to bear it. The bath water quality was good, but overall I didn't feel like taking a bath, so I only went once. I felt bad for the owner because he's a nice guy, but even so, I think he should have thought a little more about how he would feel if he were a customer. I won't be going there again, but for those who don't mind that sort of thing, it might be nice to have meals in your room and feel at ease (I think these things vary from person to person)."
