"I am 62yo and attended pubs all over the country for more than 40 years. And till this day never attended a pub on New Years Day that has closed the door to patrons due to some ridiculous event they plan to run later that afternoon, and at $100 a head to get in the door. Even the bar is shut. After chatting to a few of the locals about my experience I now understand why they all seem to roll their eyes as soon as the Portarlington Grand Hotel is mentioned, and suggest I try the golf club or head to the pubs at St Leonards or Drysdale instead as they actually welcome the public. Earlier in the week a group of us attended the pub on 2 separate occasions for lunch, no one has been impressed with their meals. On the first occasion I ordered their Sliced Beef Burger, supposedly filled with thinly sliced porterhouse steak, it was tasteless strips of tough over cooked grey beef. On the second occasion I ordered their chicken schnitzel, a dish that even the most inept pub can usually get right, it was small, deep fried, and obviously not prepared in house, and the Salard was not fresh. In all a minus 5 if you ask me. Absolutely pitiful, and I for one will be avoiding this establishment like the plague from now on."

"Beautiful location in the bush like a farm-stay. Great to see the animals but the big drawback was accommodation that is in a desperate need of a deep clean. Cobwebs everywhere in the cottage. Just surface cleaned. We had to wash several of the dishes before use. BBQ leaking gas once you open the bottle with knobs in off position not safe?? Water pressure not great as the pump need to kick in an then combined with a water saving shower head makes the shower a challenge. Towels and bedding has been used way to many times for a rental property. When you pay money to stay in a property you expect a lot better bedding and not old towels. Loved the fact that there was wood to light a fireplace the first night although we had to clean the fireplace first of old ash to start a new one. There was enough wood to make one fire during our stay. Outdoor the property lacks maintenance. Gardens and animals looks well cared for. There is an indoor pool onsite. Looks all clean and well maintained overlooking the lake. Lots of parking on the property. Out cottage was a short walk from the parking area past a workshop and printing business operating on the same site. The owners live in the main house and rent out several cottages on the property Remote control gate give you access while staying at the property Checkin and checkout was very straightforward as it is self checkin and checkout."

Freshwater Creek Cottages & Farm Stay

"We spent three nights in the Willow Cottage and are already planning our next trip back in a few months time! We had the best time at the farm. Our daughter bottle fed lambs, we walked goats on a lead every day, went for tractor rides, hand fed cows, sheep, pigs, horses, goats and a kangaroo. There were 31 newborn piglets that were soooo cute! We collected and cooked fresh eggs on one of the mornings and gave a couple of them to another family, as the chickens weren't laying many when we were there. We didn't take any devices and had the best holiday we've had in years. It was great to disconnect and get back to nature. A couple of nights the farmers built a fire in the common area and all the kids toasted marshmallows before moving on to bottle feeding the lambs. We took torches, so did night walks to see what night animals we could find and spotted some cute possums, owls and a tawny frog mouth. The property is beautiful. The farmers are knowledgeable, friendly and hospitable and the cottages are so cute and cosy with a raging fire. Can't speak highly enough of Freshwater Creek Cottages and can't wait to get back there"

Booking late meant options were limited, and while the price was on the higher side, it’s to be expected for this time of year. The room, though a bit dated, was exceptionally clean—one of the cleanest we’ve come across. The motel is situated in a very quiet and peaceful location, perfect for a restful night. However, you’ll need a car to get into Torquay. Overall, it was a comfortable stay, and I wouldn’t hesitate to book here again if we’re in the area."

"I have stayed here before and have found all to be excellent. The proximity to my 90 year old Mums nursing home being the drawcard. This time however, on one of the days we stayed, we were not able to shower as there was a leaky pipe, and the water was turned off so they could fix it. Not their fault, but as we only stayed 3 days and were out early every morning (old ladies have zero tolerance for being late) we found it disappointing and so marked it down from ‘excellent’ to ‘good.’"

"This 3 star review is an average for many visits over the past year - some of which have been very good, but today was a real let-down and a reason to question a return visit. The menu is varied enough for everyone and the food is fresh and well presented, generous serves and good value. We have visited on major event dates (Mothers or Fathers Days) and always been well served and in quick order despite the numbers. However, occasionally the kitchen lets the experience down by slow delivery or inexplicable mix-ups in the order of dishes (eg a main course delivered early with an entree). Today was a sad reflection of what should be a great pub dining experience. The dining room was only half full when we arrived for the first sitting just after 12pm. Entrees took over 30 minutes to arrive. After our entree plates had been cleared, our very efficient and professional waiter Eddy kindly advised that there was a delay in delivering main dishes and we would have to wait 35 minutes. As we were on a short timeframe, we asked him to confirm that. He returned from the kitchen stating the delay might be 20 minutes as he had been told. After 25 minutes waiting, we inquired again - another 10 minutes at least as we were behind a larger table (just 2 of us). So we cancelled our order and left - hungry, disappointed and annoyed. If you have an issue with a new cook, then let diners know when they arrive so we can decide if we have time to wait. Free comp drinks don’t solve it."

"The lights in the male toilets are not working well. It switches off every 2.5 minutes . When one is taking bath at night - it is very dark and both my boys almost slip and hit their heads in the bathroom. They had to yell so loud so that I could bring torches for them. Basically, for the next few days - whether brushing teeth, bathing , wee or poo- one has to bring their camping lights in the toilet. This is not acceptable considering the rooms are close to $160 a night for bunk beds . The communal kitchen however is good as they have freezer for people on fishing trips etc"
