Property Description
This is the destination for Family Reunions in Southern WV! The Amherst Retreat was designed by architect E.T. Bogges in the mid 1960's as a residence for Mr and Mrs. J. S. Lewis. The home was built on the cliffs overlooking the New River Gorge at Arbuckle Creek. The home is currently wrapping up a complete renovation from top to bottom. We have installed new roof, HVAC, electrical, drywall, floors, lighting, appliances, furniture, and thousands of hours of elbow grease to restore the home to its original glory. The mansion was built using nothing but the finest materials from around the globe. The siding is redwood and stone. The doors are mahogany. The cabins are wormy chestnut. The house has marble fireplaces, countertops and showers. Expensive doorknobs and bathroom brass fixtures are throughout the house. We are accepting reservations for the summer of 2019 starting in May and will be updating the photos weekly as furnishing arrive and the finishing projects and touches are complete. The home is perfect for large family gatherings, weddings, corporate retreats, or a multi family vacation getaway. The kitchen is over 1,000 square feet and is lined with the original Wormy Chestnut cabinets, large food prep island, handmade French fixtures, Italian marble counter tops, and updated with all new Samsung appliances and a a custom concrete deep sink. There is a table that seats eight opposite the cooking area along the glass wall with one of many beautiful views of the gorge. There is also a dining room with a table and chairs that accommodate ten. There is a second chefs kitchen and pantry with an extra set of stainless steel appliances for catering or large groups. The kitchen area alone is an amazing place to congregate and visit with friends and family. The Main Dinning and Living Rooms are a combined 1,300 square feet with multiple exits to the front patio garden or the 1,400 square foot back deck. These grand rooms have been renovated with new hardwood floors and furniture that will seat a small army. We were able to refinish the elaborate trim, the piano key crown molding, the Italian Marble Mantle , and an original silk oriental mural. The upper level is linked my brightly lit tile hallways guiding guests to four bedrooms. Three bed rooms share one and one half baths and will accommodate many different sleeping arrangements with each room having their own pull out couch. The Master bedroom is fit for a king or a mid size family. The ensuite bath has a cedar sauna, walk in closet, his and hers marble vanities, and a sunken marble tub that is large enough for an entire family as well. All the fixtures and faucets in the upper level baths and outfitted with mid century Phylrich brass details that have been refinished by a local jeweler. The lower level is accessed by a spiral stairway of the kitchen and has multiple entry points from the south side of the property. There are two bedrooms with a private bath and a kids bunk room with plenty of freestyle bedding arrangements. **Adventures and Activities** - World-class whitewater rafting and kayaking available on the Gauley River (Ranked as one of the top 10 whitewater rivers in the world) - Family rafting and float-trips on the New River - Renowned rock climbing opportunities throughout the New River Gorge. - Nearly 10 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails accessible from the front door - 13 miles of IMBA-built single track at the Arrowhead stacked-loop trail system (within a 10 minute drive) - Aerial adventures, a high-speed zipline and an amazing canopy tour system is only 1 mile away - Nearby fly fishing (and guided float trips) for trout and Smallmouth BassAbout pets:No pets allowed.About checkOut:Check out before 11:00 AM.About children:Children allowed: ages 0-17.About checkIn:Check in after 4:00 PM.About smoking:Smoking is not permitted.About minBookingAge:Minimum age to rent: 25.About events:No events allowed.

Amazing view Our group enjoyed the space of the home and the amazing view from the porch as well as all the great outdoor activities close by. The house has some very outdated areas, but looks like remodeling is happening in phases as some areas looked to have been recently updated. The house was not as clean as we would have expected. None of the furniture had been swept under in quite awhile and the yard needed to be weeded/trimmed especially on the walkway. Overall though it was a lovely stay and I wish the owners luck.

The property is older, but as expressed in the listing. The neighborhood is nothing like you would expect getting to the property, but once at the property, amazing, very secluded. Loved watching the fog rise up through the valleys. If you like tree frogs, they will sing you to sleep at night. This is the first place our group of 18 stayed that had a properly stocked kitchen that could accommodate this number of people. There were extra towels, bedding linens and more than one dish towel. Thank you property owners!Three of the bathrooms/showers were ensuites, which was a little challenging for such a large group, but very manageable if you had 6 couples. Host communication was very prompt and much appreciated.

Perfect location for Ace Adventures Group of ladies stayed here to run the 100 mile rim to river ultra endurance race. It was the perfect location and perfect house for all of us to spread out and have our own separate space while still having group space. Property manager extremely accommodating. Beds comfortable, toilets flushed, some drainage issues with showers…but expected with age of house. Beautiful location. Will book again if in the area again.

Wonderful accommodations for Xmas celebration We all got to stay together with plenty of room. The New River Gorge site-seeing was close by and spent a few hours there doing the auto tour. Lots of hiking to do if you are able. Beautiful place and scenery.

Beautiful house The house is clean and well maintained. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook during our stay. We’ve been coming here for three years. We like the hot tub, the views, the layout of the house and the location.

Beautiful but unusual house The home was definitely located beautifully to over look the New River Gorge. Convenient to do hiking and white water rafting. Large kitchen and the 7 bedrooms were all used. There were architectural aspects which were interesting and somewhat unsafe. A literal sunken tub with no railing, circular staircase which has very widely spaced vertical posts, dining room chairs which we did not trust and a bathroom sink which had only hot water… The large kitchen was very well stocked! The laundry room had an ample supply of extra linens. With daily hikes and using the hot tub, we appreciated having a washer and dryer. Overall it was a good place for us to stay.

WV I was under the impression that the place was ok for my MS friend.IT WAS NOT! He was in a wheelchair and had a terrible time getting around the house. The tubs were all sunk and had no safety features to get in and out of them. Very unsuitable for a group 65 to 75 years old! We will not be back.
