This hotel has very nice landscape. Beautiful garden areas with wildlife (exotic birds mostly). We even saw a small eagle behind our bungalow. The staff is very friendly but the beds are terrible and the rooms are dirty. On top of that you have to make lines at the only restaurant that serves your meals. There is no meal variety. Management appears to be resigned to only serving local guests, not international guests.

I have stayed at this resort 4 times in the last ten years. It’s a great location with nice facilities and very good food, but the resort has no way to control the bad behavior of its guests. There is roaming security on the beach and security posted on the resort borders as well as an entrance guard who checks his list of guests upon arrival, but inside the resort there have been many examples of bad behavior. On our last trip there were half a dozen pools for ALL ages and just one small pool “para adultos only” and yet there was a continual influx of families with small children into that one pool. Periodically a nearby lifeguard would stroll into the adults-only pool area and patiently explain that it’s FOR ADULTS only and then those people would argue with him. After the guard left more children would enter into that pool and not just sit quietly but splash, jump up and down while their parents sing songs of the revolution and the guard would not return for another 20-30 minutes. Bad-behaving parents teaching their children its okay to break the rules and annoy older adults, especially gringos. Ugh. The “bungalows” are nice with comfortable beds and usually warm shower water but twice I have been awakened, including my last visit, by drunken guests usually young men. There is NO security to prevent this from happening. I had to go to the drunken young men and ask them, “por favor mas tranquillo” at 1 am. I have stayed at hotels from San Juan del Sur to Ometepe Island, Granada and Managua and have never had so many problems with other guests, national or international, but at this Barcelo beach resort the guests behave differently. Maybe it has something to do with being an “all-inclusive” hotel where people line up like pigs at the feeding trough and nights are not too expensive? If the prices were doubled would there be a different collection of guests? I don’t know, but I wont be returning to this resort again.

Bad service. Some of the waiters they ignore you just not to assist you. I always tip also. Front desk won’t even answer the phone. Bad experience overall not recommended for anyone I know.

Barcelo Montelimar provided the perfect location and backdrop for a couple's vacation that led to a lifetime of memories and a wonderful experience. We paid over $400 for two rooms at Barceló Montelimar, hoping to enjoy a relaxing family getaway for four adults and one child. What we got instead was a chaotic, frustrating, and incredibly disappointing experience from beginning to end. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that hospitality is not a priority here. The front desk staff didn’t greet us with a smile or even basic courtesy. When I approached one employee to ask questions, her response was, “Have you been here before? If so, you probably already know how it works.” That was it. No explanation of amenities, no schedule for meals, no welcome—just a lazy brush-off. We checked in and headed to our rooms, only to find that both had issues. Mini-fridges weren’t working, the TV remotes had no batteries, one hair dryer was broken, and worst of all, the phones didn’t work—so we couldn’t even call reception for help. We brushed it off, trying to make the best of it. We were told dinner started at 6:00pm, so we showed up at 6:30pm—only to find the restaurant completely closed. Staff nearby told us dinner actually started at 7:00pm. Fine, we took a walk and came back early to stand in line. But 7:15pm came and went, and the doors still hadn’t opened. We waited 25 minutes in that line, just to eat. The food was decent, but by then we were already exhausted from the confusion. Later that evening, we wanted to take our 5-year-old to the kids’ show at La Casona. Since it’s far from the rooms, we called reception to ask about the shuttle. They told us it runs every 15 minutes and to wait at a nearby stop. We waited. And waited. 45 minutes went by—no shuttle. When one finally drove by, we had to wave it down like a taxi. The driver stopped, only to tell us he was “doing errands” and we should wait another 15 minutes. At this point, we were livid. Our son was heartbroken that he missed the show we’d promised. We gave up and returned to our rooms, tired and angry. I tried calling the front desk to explain our frustration, but again, they didn’t care. They told us to “talk to customer service in the morning.” That night, we tried to salvage the evening by opening the beers from the minibar… but they were warm, because of the broken fridge. I genuinely cried in that moment. Everything that could go wrong had gone wrong. As if that weren’t enough, our keys stopped working at midnight. We only got into the rooms because someone else was already inside. The next morning at breakfast, we were told we couldn’t sit in a certain section because it was “too far” for the servers. Seriously? At a buffet? We pushed back and sat where we wanted. Then we spoke with Erika at customer service, who was polite—but totally unhelpful. She told us everything we experienced was “normal.” That waiting in line 25 minutes for dinner was expected. That keys stop working if they rub against something. Amazing place! Great for kids, great if you don't have kids. Tona beer on tap, it's light beer. Place looks huge on the internet, but everything is very close when you are here. Not even a cigarette walk away. They also sell cigarettes at the bar, but very expensive (supply and demand) You can smoke everywhere, but I recommend bringing a travel ash tray. Nobody wants to liter.
