"The hotel offers a free shuttle service to and from Matsushima Station and Matsushima Kaigan Station, which was incredibly convenient for me as I wasn't driving. The hotel is situated on a hillside with beautiful views. I booked a sea-view room, but unfortunately, I was assigned to the second floor, which was a bit disappointing. Nevertheless, the hotel's ambiance is very relaxing, and a dip in the outdoor hot spring bath was incredibly soothing."

"We were given the wrong room type upon check-in, but the staff quickly resolved the issue. Breakfast and dinner were both delicious, with many choices, each one a pleasant surprise! The outdoor hot spring was large, comfortable, and clean – definitely worth a try!"

Matsushima Century Hotel

📍 Senzui-8, Matsushima
★★★ 8.6 (57 reviews)

"After much deliberation, I decided to book this hotel because it's only a 10-minute walk from Matsushima Kaigan Station and close to all the attractions. The one-night, two-meal package was excellent, and it was clear that every staff member was dedicated and attentive to guests. The hotel's hot springs were amazing—truly silky and moisturizing, just as described. I wish I could soak in them every day! The room was spacious, directly facing the Matsushima seascape. Opening the curtains was a treat, haha. Oh, and the hotel offers a shuttle service to and from the two main stations, which can be booked in advance. We didn't use it, though, as it wasn't a long walk to the station anyway."

"We traveled in group of 6 and had a great time during our stay. Though the hotel was quite old and Onsen was small but the hot spring quality was superb. We felt smoother skin after use. Dinner and Breakfast were also great."

Matsushima Sakan Shoan

"From Sendai Station, take the Sengoku Line to Matsushima-Kaigan Station in about 40 minutes. Taxis are available at this station; a 15-minute ride costs about 2250 yen. The hotel doesn't offer a free shuttle service. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted with warm and attentive service. Name tags on slippers prevent you from wearing the wrong ones for the hot springs, and the menu in the evenings also includes your name – impeccable attention to detail. The room views are superb, all facing Matsushima Bay. Unfortunately, it rained heavily during my two stays, so I'll have to come back another time. Matsushima is one of Japan's three most scenic spots, and I personally think it surpasses Amanohashidate. I haven't visited Miyajima yet. The entire Matsushima-Kaigan is meticulously designed, with exquisite details throughout. The rooms are large and luxurious. The bathroom has a cypress wood tub for hot spring bathing, and the yukata and shawl are elegant and beautiful. The staff are incredibly patient, translating every detail of the procedures for me using their phones without simplifying things for foreign tourists. The person who greeted me was a very enthusiastic and attentive young woman. In the afternoon, the bar plays Yo-Yo Ma music and offers complimentary tea, coffee, and alcoholic beverages. The Japanese-style room was made up in the evening and the bed was taken away in the morning. The service was always top-notch. The only slight disappointment was that dinner was a bit slow. Breakfast offered a choice of Western or Japanese options; I chose the Japanese one, which was very plentiful and nutritious. The Daikin air conditioner was a bit noisy even at its lowest setting, so I turned it off. I've slept on very comfortable tatami mattresses in many places, but the bedding here was of exceptional quality, and I had a good night's sleep. The onsen (hot spring) was very clean and not crowded. In the afternoon, fresh roses were provided in the outdoor pool for you to add to the hot spring. It's also worth praising that check-out is at noon. The spacious, beautiful, and scenic hotel reflected its high quality in every detail. Overall, it was a wonderful stay."

"I booked a room on the mountain side, but it was practically a parking lot view. If you care about the view from your room, I recommend booking a sea-side room instead. The seafood buffet for dinner was absolutely delicious."

"We came here for the local onsen experience, the location is great and it’s just opposite to scenery spots, saving us time and commuting cost. The staff and service is very professional and attentive. The double bed room is spacious, onsen clothes and towels are served. Since the shops and visiting area at Matsushima close as early as 4pm (maybe only in winter?), there’s not much action after that. This hotel experience fill up the time we spend at Matsushima, there’s a little restaurant inside the hotel for people to enjoy food after the onsen. You can also choose to go to family mart which is just 5 minutes walk away, and get whatever food you want."

"Check-in was at 3:00 PM, and there were three meal times, so I had time until the earliest one at 5:00 PM. I strolled around the hotel and then relaxed with a drink in the lounge near the front desk. The only snacks available were alcohol, juice, and ice cream bars, so there were no snacks. You could purchase dried goods at the convenience store right next door. The drinks were Chilean red and white wine, draft beer from the built-in server, black highball, and lemon sour. As dinner time approached, we moved to the third floor for a buffet-style meal, so we just picked up what we liked and ate. There was an all-you-can-drink option for an additional fee, but as a sake lover, the selection wasn't quite satisfying, so I opted for soft drinks. It also seemed like you could upgrade the buffet to include all-you-can-eat crab or spiny lobster by checking in at the front desk until 4:00 PM. Since we visited during Christmas, the service to take commemorative photos wearing Santa hats and reindeer antlers was a nice touch. The hot spring is located next to the elevator on the first floor, and the women's bath is directly ahead, down the hallway. It's comprised of a large bath, sauna, and open-air bath (with an upper and lower section). The bath shampoo doesn't lather well, so I had to push it hard. It might be better to bring your own. My room was a low single-type tatami room on the fourth floor, with a great view. Unfortunately, some areas were a little rough and dusty. The only other interesting things in the building were karaoke and table tennis. Both have reception forms nearby, and they're available for hourly rental, so you'd need to plan ahead to make a reservation."

"The ryokan location is excellent. My room has a huge picture window facing east. I can see the famous bay with its many islands, including the Fukuura island (福浦𡷊), in the morning with wonderful sun rise view. The Japanese breakfasts were excellent especially the one on our second day… fresh grilled fish, etc.. The Kaiseki dinners for both nights were wonderful with fresh grilled fish and high grade wagyu beef plus oyster cooked to perfection. The Onsens on the other hand are just Okay. However with the view of Fukuura island and its red bridge … nice."
