The Surfing Turtle

We stayed at the Surfing Turtle in April 2022 and had an amazing experience. Our trip included this hotel and a larger one in Isla Verde and they were quite different experiences. Here's what you need to know about the Surfing Turtle: This place is for people that want to be in a crowded tourist spot. It's just off the beach, (which you can view from the upper patio) and next to a square that has restaurants. There is a neighborhood feel and you'll find mostly locals out and about. There restaurants are great and include La Fanda, which is across the street and will deliver, Machos, which has karaoke(!) and Boardrider's Surf Bar & Grill, which has music on Sunday nights. The beach right off the hotel is called La Pared, which has a lot of surfers and strong currents. A 5 min walk north on the sand, and you round a small point to get to Costa Azul beach, which is similarly beautiful, much less windy, and great for swimming/hanging out. It's about a 20-ish minute walk behind the beach to Luquillo Beach, which is more touristy and has a lot of great food stands. Ther is no lobby or check-in desk at The Surfing Turtle. Your room will be ready, and you'll get texts with all the info you need to get into your room. I found the management to be highly proactive and available for questions. If you're looking for a physical front desk work out room, dining room, however, this isn't it (Although, there is a patio with tables and swinging chairs that's pretty charming. The room itself was awesome: a good amount of space (we were on the top floor with a larger room), cool furnishings, and a comfortable bed. The location is central to a lot of things to do in Eastern Puerto Rico. Many trips to the rainforest that leave from San Juan will stop in Luquillo to pick people up. Likewise, Fajardo & its bio bays and Ceiba and its trips to Vieques and Culebra are not far. The rainforest itself is right there. We could see the nearby mountains from our room. The Surfing Turtle was the centerpiece of our amazing trip to Puerto Rico and I look forward to returning. It's everything that we love about hotels: comfortable, convienient, stylish, centrally located, safe, and well-run. We felt lucky to find it!

The host went above and beyond their means to accommodate us. There was a problem with the room that we booked, but then were shifted to a bigger room. The host was very responsive and provided us with information when we needed. Kids enjoyed sleeping in the bunk beds. Parking were available nearby and the beautiful beach was just a few minutes of walk. There were plenty of restaurants in the area and great breakfast place just infront of the hotel. Great work, keep it up.
