The hotel is conveniently located just across the street from the Takayama Train Station and Takayama Nohi Bus Terminal, with a Family Mart right on the first floor. It is within easy walking distance of most major attractions.
While the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful—even offering luggage storage after checkout—the facilities are quite dated. The rooms still use traditional keys for access and are on the smaller side, making them better suited for single travelers. My main issues were the bed, which was quite firm, and the air conditioning, which didn't cool the room sufficiently, forcing me to keep the window open.

This was my second stay at the Washington Hotel in Takayama, and I'll start with the pros. It's incredibly convenient, located directly across from Takayama Station and the Nohi Bus Center. From the platform, it's less than a 50-meter walk to the hotel lobby, which is super handy. For travelers catching early buses to Shirakawa-go, Kamikochi, or Furukawa (especially recommended during cherry blossom season), this location is a huge advantage. All the nearby attractions are within walking distance, and the drugstore, restaurants, and specialty shops next to the hotel are among the last to close in Takayama. This is a big deal because many restaurants and shops in Takayama are quite particular, operating only four or five hours (or even just two or three) a day and often closing three or four days a week. Some restaurants even stop taking customers by 6 or 7 PM. We joked that at night, Takayama is full of 'hungry ghosts' wandering around! The hotel's toothbrushes are still the 'old style' and are much better than those in many other hotels. The triple room layout was well-designed and felt spacious when organized properly. The shower had good pressure and was very comfortable. What needs improvement is the shower curtain – it's too thin, so the strong shower spray easily splashes outside the tub. The breakfast is only a Japanese set meal. I tried it one day, and the taste was just so-so. I skipped it the second day, and it was still the same on the third, so I decided not to eat it again. The breakfast options are too limited; it looks good but doesn't taste great. Other hotel services were still good. The triple room had two trash cans, which shows thoughtful attention to detail. The overall bathroom facilities felt a bit old, and the extractor fan wasn't very powerful... Oh, and the hotel offers a hot spring ♨️ with pretty long opening hours, but I didn't get to try it, so I can't comment. All in all, for this price, being able to stay in such an extremely convenient, central location near the station (and commercial center) is definitely worth it. On a side note, I'm not sure if it's due to an economic downturn or the off-season, but Shirakawa-go and Takayama were noticeably less fun, less interesting to explore, and had fewer good shopping and dining options than my previous two visits. 'Travel early!' is truly not an empty phrase.

Location: About a 10-minute walk from Kyoto Station, the location is great (there's even a direct airport line from Osaka Kansai Airport).
Cleanliness: Very clean, with bidets everywhere – very comforting. I really like Japan's integrated bathrooms.
Facilities: It's quite new. Being able to screen mirror was a pleasant surprise.
Comfort: If there are two people, I recommend booking a twin room. Japanese double beds are too small and cramped. It's tiny but has everything, though overall it felt a bit cramped. The design is quite thoughtful, and there are bedside lamps.
Service: Japanese hotels are usually known for their service, but there was absolutely none here.
1. Check-in and check-out are both self-service (I wonder what the four or five staff members at the front desk actually do – no wonder Japan's job market is good and not competitive).
2. I left something at the hotel this time. It took several hours for them to reply to my online message and email, and no one answered the phone (it reminded me of Mu Xin's poem, 'In the past, the days passed slowly, cars and mail were slow, one only loved one person in a lifetime' – tsk tsk tsk).

This Takayama hotel, which just opened this April, boasts a brand-new and clean environment and facilities. The guest rooms are fully equipped, featuring a small kitchen with an electric stove and a complete set of pots, pans, and tableware, allowing guests to cook their own meals.
The rooms feature a Japanese-style separate wet and dry bathroom design, with the toilet and shower completely independent and equipped with a smart toilet with an automatic lid. The bathroom is spacious and doesn't feel cramped, with high-quality showerhead and bathtub facilities, and ample storage space for clothes. The room includes a sofa and a TV, and by Japanese accommodation standards, the space is exceptionally spacious, making it ideal for couples, families of three, or families of four.
The only drawback is its somewhat remote location; it's not within walking distance of Takayama JR station and requires a taxi ride, costing approximately 2,000 yen. There is no restaurant on-site, but food can be ordered through the Uber delivery app and delivered directly to the hotel entrance. Additionally, the hotel lacks an elevator; if you're staying on the second floor, you'll need to carry your luggage up and down the stairs yourself.

The hotel room was spacious and clean. They offered complimentary drinks upon arrival in the afternoon, including free beer! After a relaxing hot spring bath, there were free cold drinks available. So cozy and i was lucky to have the best roomies ever ☀️
🪲PROS
- has a shuttle bus and multiple times a day or a bus station close by
- inner part of the city is reachable within 20-25 mins of walking and the folk village is very close
- kind owner and cozy interior with a very homey feel
- kitchen and bathrooms were easily accessible and clean, shampoo and shower gel were included
- coin laundry and coin dryer were easy to use and cheap as well
❤️🩹CONS
- not really a con, but remember to bring a towel and toothbrush/toothpaste, if you forget it you can also get a towel at the Inn
- 25min on foot is not that far away from the inner city and it’s great that the folk village is so close (if you want to visit) - but i had my focus on different things during my visit, so next time i would book something closer to the inner part of the city and the travel bus station
🌱 all in all, i really enjoyed my stay

Awesome hotel located just 5-10mins walk behind FamilyMart ie opposite the TAKAYAMA NOHI Bus Stn & JR. The check in was easy & front desk staff was very professional ensuring the process was easy & swift! The hotel has a great & large Hot Spring and outdoor Rotenburo Onsen they’re segregated Men-Women. The onsen lobby has large lounge space to relax, free ice cream and a large full length glass window overlooking you may sit on chairs & coin operated massage chairs enjoying the beautiful town and fabulous snow capped mountains at the edge of the town in the day & sunrise!!
The morning Japanese breakfast options are plentiful, staffs are helpful and friendly too! To walk to the Old Houses District perhaps only take 15mins leisure walk but gets really quiet & dark by 6PM in March!

This was one of my best stays in Japan. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, and the price was very affordable.
The hotel is very conveniently located, only about a 2-minute walk from both the train station and the bus station. The lobby is spacious and beautifully designed, and there is also a comfortable dining area where guests can enjoy complimentary coffee in the afternoon.
The room I received was quite spacious by Japanese standards. It had two super single beds and an L-shaped couch, with plenty of space to open my suitcase easily. The bathroom was also larger than those in my previous hotels, with a full-size bathtub which made it very comfortable.
It’s a shame that I only stayed for one night. I definitely should have stayed longer because the room was so comfortable.
Thank you Chisun Grand Takayama for your wonderful hospitality. I will definitely come back again. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Takayama.

Amazing
GGuest UserThis hotel is super convenient for solo travelers, being close to both the train and bus stations. The room was incredibly clean and surprisingly spacious for a standard room in Japan – we could easily fit two large suitcases! The hotel's location is also great, close to popular attractions and restaurants.
AAnonymous UserSuper comfortable for solo traveler. The room is booked actually able to accommodate 2 person. Just a few minutes walk from Takayama station. For light sleeper be mindful of rambling sound of train. Basically Takayama is a small town walking seems to be the ideal way to tourist spots. Overall I enjoyed my stay at the hotel.
ZzizibehappyArriving in Takayama by highway bus, I chose to stay at the same Residence Hotel as my previous visit. It's incredibly convenient, located just a left turn from the Nohi Bus Terminal exit, making it zero distance from both the bus and JR stations. The luxury suite is huge, featuring a balcony, four beds, and a fully equipped kitchen with pots, pans, a microwave, and a large refrigerator. The washing machine with a dryer was an absolute lifesaver. Even better, all the drinks in the fridge were complimentary, including two 2L bottles of mineral water, beer, sake, green tea, and cola. Basic condiments like salt, soy sauce, pepper, and cooking oil were also provided. There's a supermarket right next door, perfect for buying Hida beef and cooking up a feast.
GGuest UserThe location is the best value adding item to this hotel, they only offered limited room cleaning so it may take a while to adjust if you are international travellers. Having the microwave and washing machine in the room is another key advantage of this hotel, overall I will say this is one of the best options in Takayama. Oh they also have free water machines every floor so you can save up buying bottles from convenient stores.
SSuzhiなrenEvery year at the end of the year, I visit Takayama, mainly to see the snow scenery in Shirakawa-go, and this hotel has pretty much become my go-to choice. What I love most is the service; the staff are all incredibly warm and attentive, making for a very comfortable stay. Plus, you can book a private onsen, which is wonderfully quiet and relaxing – a real highlight of the trip. Last year, the room I stayed in had a beautiful Japanese tatami area, which really added to the traditional Japanese ambiance. It's a shame I couldn't book that room type this time; it seems they no longer have it, which is a bit disappointing. Nevertheless, the overall experience was still excellent, and I'll likely choose to stay here again next time I'm in Takayama.
SSuperkidGreat stay overall, but the check-in experience wasn’t pleasant. The female staff was rude when informing me that parking is only available from 2pm and that I couldn’t park earlier, or even drop off my luggage. I have to park somewhere else instead.
MMike IgOur stay at Ryokan Gizan was a truly memorable experience. This is a traditionally built and decorated Japanese ryokan, with tatami floors, sliding doors, and an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a “must-visit” if you’re looking to experience traditional Japanese accommodation — even a short stay of 2–3 nights is enough to make it special.
The ryokan is quite old, which actually adds to its authentic charm, though it might feel a bit less comfortable for more demanding guests. That said, it’s very well maintained and everything is clean and thoughtfully arranged.
The onsen facilities were excellent — one public bath and four private ones that you can use freely. After long days of exploring, it was a real treat.
We highly recommend booking with the traditional dinner included. The meals were a highlight: we had Yakiniku the first night and Shabu-shabu the second, both featuring fresh, generous portions of delicious food. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese set — beautifully presented and made with care, though not quite to our personal taste.
The location is stunning — surrounded by mountains, rivers, and blossoming trees. It feels peaceful and remote. Just note that amenities like ATMs or grocery stores are limited nearby. However, it’s well connected by bus (just a 3-minute walk from the ryokan), which can take you to Kamikochi or the terminals at Takayama and Hirayu Onsen. Buses run about once an hour, so it’s quite manageable.
Overall, a fantastic stay — relaxing, unique, and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Japan.
GGuest UserThis hotel is super close to Hirayu Onsen bus station, just a few minutes' walk away. It's a pretty big place. After checking in, you swap your shoes for slippers, and you can wear the provided yukata (Japanese robes) throughout the entire hot spring hotel. To avoid lugging our luggage up and down, we opted for a slightly more expensive Western-style standard room in the main building. They have an outdoor onsen, and the men's and women's baths switch daily. After a relaxing soak, there's free ice cream available. We had dinner and breakfast included, both buffet style, but the taste was just so-so.
GGuest UserRoom is small, typical Japan budget hotel. They only got 2 floors with no elevator, so we’re lucky that our room in first floor. Didn’t manage to try their free supper but they do have free supper.
Location is not close to train station buy they have shuttle which goes from and to hotel quite often.
There’s one family mart across the hotel which is quite helpful because there’s no other restaurant nearby!
南南方澳配速員The hotel is in an excellent location with great amenities nearby. It's just a bridge away from Miyagawa Morning Market and very close to the old town of Takayama. During my two-day stay, all the other guests I encountered were European, and I was the only Asian person in the entire backpacker room, which was a very unique experience.
