Joshua Creek Ranch ★★★★

"Positives: Wonderful Ranch, great layout, fantastic food, great accommodations and warm and friendly staff. Negatives: 1400 acres with maybe half of it at best due to daily operations, suitable to hunt turkeys. When we arrived, we were informed that no gobblers had been seen or heard for two weeks, followed by, only one gobbler taken on the ranch in two years. 5 gobblers, 4 jakes and a few hens were all they had seen this spring. That was not the story when booking the hunt. Arguably, not enough to have a sustainable hunting program by any stretch. With three hunters there, had we filled two tags each, it would have decimated the flock, no professional resource management given this scenario. Sad situation in my opinion. Guides were friendly, but not seasoned turkey hunters and had no direct bead on where birds were at the time or their daily patterns. Truth be told, during our time there, they were roosting off the property, and the Ranch had no backup parcels to cover unforeseen circumstances, or lack of birds. Despite all this, I had one gobbler cross onto the property and closing under 200 yards only to go silent and never heard from again when the ranch truck pulled in directly in front of us a little over 100 yards to release pheasants for the soon to start bird hunt over dogs. My guide told me that the hunting manager is always aware of our location, and this is unacceptable and unprofessional for allowing ranch operations of one type of hunt to directly interfere with another. This is not my first rodeo with nearly a dozen successful hunts in the great state of Texas, and thirty-one spring and fall turkey seasons under my belt, and this was a dismal hunting experience. I have not been contacted by anyone on staff and was told that the incident with the hunt interrupted was communicated. Given what we learned upon arriving and not given reasonable choices to hunt gobblers where they actually are, the hunt should have been canceled and refunded. I was offered an even swap for a whitetail doe the first evening, and I declined as I came to turkey hunt. They are not set up in so many ways, in my opinion to offer a quality turkey hunt."

📍 503 Deer Road, Kendall County

"The cabins are a little ways from Fredericksburg , but staying at Walnut Cabins was such a pleasure it is worth the drive. Carl and Rhonda are the perfect hosts and the cabins are stocked with everything you could ever need or want, including deer. The cabins are clean and ours had a deck where we could watch the wildlife. I would highly recommend staying here."

"This was probably the best experience I’ve ever had at this class of hotel. It was clean, people were friendly, the pool was much nicer than expected.  The waffles at breakfast were the star."

Walnut Canyon Cabins ★★★
"My husband and I have been coming to these cabins for the last 10 years, at least once or twice a year, and it’s always an amazing stay. This is the perfect place if you’re looking for peace, quiet, and serenity. The owners are so friendly and always go out of their way to make sure your stay is enjoyable. The breakfast, especially with the farm-fresh eggs, is absolutely delicious. It’s a wonderful spot to unplug, relax, and take in the beauty around you. There are plenty of deer on the property that are fun to feed, along with the cows — it really adds to the charm of the experience. The location is also perfect — it’s close enough to town to easily access restaurants, stores, and even a nearby winery, yet far enough out that you can still enjoy nature, watch the stars at night, and experience true peace and quiet away from the city noise and lights. If you’re looking for a recommendation on which cabin to stay in, our favorite is the Treehouse Cabin. It has a great covered balcony that’s perfect any time of day — whether you’re enjoying your morning coffee or simply taking in the amazing views of the property. We look forward to coming back every time!"

The Kendall ★★★
"Hadn't stayed at The Kendall for several years, so was looking forward to this trip. This is an older, historic property so I knew what to expect. It was nice to see that the bar and restaurant were open. The renovation was done really well. The outdoor patio offered a very nice view. The room, however, was a disappointment. The gap around the door barely allowed the lock bolt to catch. It also allowed an awful lot of light in the room. The bed or the room tilted so the foot end of the bed was higher than the head end. The mattress, and I use the term loosely, felt as old as I am. Reminded me of the feather beds at my grandma's hose as it caused you to roll to the middle of the bed. The shower in the old claw foot tub sprayed water over the shower curtain onto a bookshelf that was hanging on the wall and soaked the few items we had placed there. Thankfully, the supply of towels in the room was enough to clean up the water on the floor. The large water bug didn't seem to mind the added moisture. I really like this motel. I hope the owners will take the time to notice the little things that make staying at an older property enjoyable."

Top of the Hill RV Resort & Cabins ★★
"In my most honest opinion, do not stay here. We stayed here 1 night on our way to SPI, and one night on our way back. Many of the tenants here are long term, but are snotty and will hog community spaces such as the pool or community building. The only food place that delivers is Pizza Hut, and management told us to get a pizza from dollar general 10 miles down the road. I asked one of the ladies in the office if they had a bathroom, and she immediately said no. Another girl sitting further away had a different opinion, but main girl shut her down. I asked why they wouldn’t let paying customers use the restroom and she said she didn’t have to let me do anything. Enough of the people, let’s talk about the cabins. The bluebonnet cabin is clean, with a loft (only for ages 10+) and a nice bed. The red rose cabin on the other hand was infested with bugs. Hardly any place to park, and the front door doesn’t shut or stay shut. Management ignored the problem and said if we didn’t like it we could leave. Kids will ride their bikes around the park and come right up to your stuff, no parents in sight, or will run around the pool and be a nuisance to those around them. Prices also vary depending on how management feels that day, we paid $145 for our first cabin, and when we came back and they gave us a cabin “identical” to that cabin, they charged us $15 more. Staff will ride around in their golf carts blasting music, which is more than annoying. This one is more my personal opinion, but some of the staff look like they’re in Halloween costumes. Please, do not stay here for your own stake."
