"We were celebrating a birthday and asked for the best rooms with a view, after being assured we would receive this. I confirmed our booking only to arrive and be given old rooms that were not upgraded. This put a damper on our entire celebration. I felt completely misled and deceived by the quality of room we received. Had I known I would’ve booked elsewhere. The first night of dinner booked, the food was inconsistent and possibly the worst pasta I have ever had. While the staff apologised, it didn’t make anyone feel more comfortable to order more food."

"⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This was one of the biggest surprises I've ever stumbled across, and quite possibly one of the best places my wife and I have stayed in the Midlands. The Old Mushroom Farm was recommended to me by a client, Alice, who lives on the neighbouring farm. She told me I wouldn't regret staying here, and she couldn't have been more right. Thank you, Alice! What was once a working mushroom farm has been transformed into something truly special. The owners have created a destination that perfectly blends thoughtful design, local creativity, and the natural beauty of the KZN Midlands. It's one of those rare places that feels authentic rather than manufactured, this is exactly what my wife and I always look for when traveling locally or aboard. We stayed in The Loft, and absolutely loved it. The space is beautifully simple, warm and rustic, while still offering all the comforts you need. The views from the main bedroom and lounge/ dinning/ kitchen are breath taking! It fits perfectly into the misty rolling hills surrounding Howick, and waking up there each morning was incredibly peaceful. Breakfast was exceptional every single day, and I have to give a special mention to the freshly baked breakfast bun, the scrambled eggs are incredible, which quickly became the highlight of every morning. Sitting outside with a lekker coffee, taking in the view while enjoying my breakfast bun, my daughter on my lap and my wife sitting calming next to me holding my hand was the perfect way to start each day. What really makes The Old Mushroom Farm stand out, though, is the wonderful community it has created. The artisan shops are full of genuinely friendly and passionate people who were happy to chat and share their stories. My wife and I found ourselves lingering far longer than we had planned. I was particularly captivated by Midlands Books & Collectables, where I happily lost track of time browsing through books, antiques and hidden treasures. If you're looking for a place that offers more than just accommodation—somewhere with character, creativity, fantastic food, beautiful scenery and genuinely warm people, yes the people are warm even though the midlands in winter are freezing, the warmth from the community resonated with us —The Old Mushroom Farm is difficult to beat. We'll definitely be back, and next time we'll be staying even longer! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

"I travel on business weekly and always look for a Southern Sun Hotel before any other, I stay at Southern Suns across the country and I must say this is the worst one I have ever encountered. From requesting an iron and ironing board and no one pitching, to calling reception and the phone ringing forever without answer, to the shocking food served at breakfast (probably yesterday's lunch leftovers), to being sent a broken iron and being told there is no other iron so I had to iron with a leaking iron which made my suit and shirt wet. There were so many awful experiences at this Southern Sun, and inexplicably it is more expensive than one of the best Southern Suns in the country (Southern Sun Waterfront - Cape Town). I will definitely not be back. In fact I'm considering cancelling my rewards card and joining Protea card and taking my business there. Unfortunately I had already booked and paid for 5 nights at this Southern Sun, it was an awful experience. I have taken time before completing this survey because I wanted to be as objective as possible but there is no running away from some sad truths. You have a very long way to go as a hotel Southern Sun PMB."

"Qambathi Mountain Lodge is an absolutely wonderful place which I could not recommend more highly. Set in the most stunning setting close to the Kamberg Nature Reserve in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains, only 2.5 hours from Durban. Our Stable suite (one of only five) was incredibly comfortable, with a huge bed, walk in shower, free-standing bath and opened out onto a private terrace into gardens where zebra and buck roamed, with the beautiful hills and mountains rising up behind. The food was absolutely delicious, a superb breakfast setting you up for a day out in the fresh mountain air, and the - five course - dinner spectacular, different every night, all accompanied by an excellent and interesting wine list. The staff were so kind, attentive and funny - always about for a chat, to help suggest walks or trips out…or to stoke the fire pit as you enjoyed one last glass before bed. The surrounding area is breathtaking. We walked in the Kamberg Reserve with a local guide, seeing ancient rock carvings high up on a cliff face, and took the lodge’s beautiful horses out on a trek around the local area with the lovely stud manager Sian. And as keen birdwatchers, the amount one could see in and around the lodge grounds was extraordinary - from Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture) soaring over each morning, Gurney’s Sunbird right outside the suite, to rarities such as Bush Blackcap in the nearby thicket, as well as three varieties of Crane a short drive away. Their sightings list is something else. Stephen and Nadia have done an extraordinary job creating Qambathi. We felt incredibly fortunate to stay there and would confidently predict anyone who loves being in the heart of nature, in a luxurious yet relaxed setting, will feel very much the same. "
