Property Description
'Alice Rocks' is ideally situated between the Red River Gorge and Cave Run Lake which facilitates a vast array of recreational opportunities. Longbow Marina is less than 10 miles away and the Gladie Visitors Center is about 15 miles away. For our rock climbing guests, the location means quick access to the Northern, Lower and Middle gorge areas - including many of the best 'trad' climbing areas such as Fortress Wall and Indian Creek. We won't leave out the sport climbers of course, with Phantasia wall being under 12 miles away, and just a little further to areas like Military Wall/Left Flank.
The 'Alice Rocks Nature Preserve' can be accessed directly from the cottage yard. The Preserve is 235 acres of natural beauty carved out of the sandstone and limestone/shale with abundant cliffs, hardwood forests, meadows and ponds. Wildlife flourishes here. Miles of old logging roads and primitive trails allow access. You will need repeated visits to explore the entire amazing area. Entry to the 'Preserve' is free, but it is not included as part of the cabin rental, and it requires a separate permission. A permit can be obtained by visiting by visiting their website - alicerocksnaturepreserve.. Please be sure to arrange your access to the 'Preserve' ahead of your visit.
The proximity to Frenchburg makes a quick weekend getaway - or an extended family/group stay - so much simpler and more enjoyable. You won't need to worry about packing and bringing every last item you may need. The Family Dollar Store is just a few hundred yards away. Within 1-2 miles there is an IGA grocery store and a gas station. Even closer are the Cornbread Cafe Restaurant, Subway sandwiches and even a Frosty Freeze ice cream stand. Menifee County does not allow alcohol sales, so be sure to bring any liquor or beer with you. You can also stop in Mt. Sterling on the way down. Mt. Sterling has a Kroger with liquor store, a Wal-Mart and a Lowe's for anything you may need.
Bordering the front of the property is Beaver Creek. There is a pedestrian bridge across the creek making a short walk to the Frenchburg City Park with its' playground. Directly adjacent to the property is the covered City Picnic Pavilion with a basketball goal.
There is something for everyone all year-round at 'Alice Rocks'. Each season can be a unique time to visit and provides a different experience. Fall brings cooler and drier weather and the changing of the leaves with its peak in October. Winter is the best time to view the amazing cliff formations all over the Gorge area once the leaves are down. Winter is an underrated time to visit when cool temperatures make hiking enjoyable and climbing is still on the menu with no bugs! Spring brings the flowers and you will want to see the dogwoods and redbuds bloom in April. Summer is the time for the lake and watersports.
The cottage is an actual antique farmhouse and portions of it are around 100 years old. The cabin has been remodeled with the addition of many modern conveniences. Please understand that old structures like this require a bit of TLC - and they just won't be the same as a new construction.
Our goal is to establish a clientele of visitors who love the 'Alice Rocks' cabin and the 'Alice Rocks Nature Preserve' as much as we do! We hope that you will want to come back on a regular basis to experience everything the area has to offer in all seasons. We plan to continue to improve the property and make your stays unique and memorable.
