"I arrived late at night and was immediately greeted by the front desk, by first name. Wonderful welcome and break from my long road trip from Virginia. The hotel is Directly off the exit. It couldn't be more convenient or easy to find! There is a small grocery store and gas station within walking distance, and yet out of sight, leaving the view from the hotel with nothing but it's natural surroundings. I highly recommend and will be returning in the future."

Gale River Motel ★★

"When we arrived, I went inside the front office, and there was no one around, so I called a number on the door, and as I exited the front office, a rude man outside looked at me and said, "You breaking and entering?" I said, "Excuse me?" He said, "The door was locked." I said, "No, it wasn't, it was open." From there, I said I was checking in, gave my name, and he asked if I got his text...I did not. So he then explained the room was open and keys were inside, and to leave the keys on the table when we leave the next morning....that was the start of my stay. The rooms are old, they smell, the decor is falling apart, and the drains in the sink and tub backed up anytime they were used. The room chair springs were broken and felt like getting out of a bean bag chair. The beds were uncomfortable, and for some odd reason, you can only drive-in park, not back-in park in this wide open parking lot (this place is in the middle of nowhere). As my teenage girl was out on a swing set, an odd guy stopped and stared at her. Then, another man drove into the parking lot, stopped his truck, and stared at her too, until he noticed my wife sitting opposite the swings, staring at him. It was a very odd experience for both my girl and my wife. In my experience, if you're a hiker or ski bum just looking for a bed...go for it. If you are a family with kids...spend the extra money and go somewhere other than this."

Mittersill Alpine Resort ★★

📍 193 Mittersill Road, Franconia

"I just wrapped up a magical Christmas week at the old Mittersill Alpine Resort at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire, and I have to say, it felt like I'd been transported to a bygone era of skiing. If you're looking for a quiet, uncrowded spot with heaps of character, this place is a hidden gem. I booked it on a whim for some solo skiing, and it exceeded all expectations – though not without a dramatic twist on my last day. Here's my detailed rundown of the experience. From the moment I arrived, the resort's vintage vibe hit me hard. Pulling up to the Tyrolean-style buildings with their steep roofs and wooden accents, it was like entering a time capsule from the 1940s or '50s. The check-in was seamless; the staff greeted me warmly, and since it was mid-week over Christmas (December 22-27, 2025), I quickly realized I might be the only guest in the entire hotel. Yes, you read that right – the whole place to myself! No lines, no noise, just pure serenity. It was eerie at first, but in the best way possible, like having a private mountain retreat. My room was cozy and retro-chic, with wooden furnishings, plush bedding, and views of the snow-covered peaks. It wasn't ultra-modern – think classic alpine lodge rather than sleek luxury – but it had all the essentials: a comfortable bed, en-suite bathroom, and even a small balcony to watch the flurries fall. The heating worked like a charm against the New Hampshire chill, and the Wi-Fi was very reliable for streaming holiday movies after a day on the slopes. Skiing was the main draw, and Mittersill delivered. With direct access to Cannon Mountain's trails, The conditions were decent for late December – fresh powder from a recent storm made for exhilarating runs on the expert Mittersill terrain. I spent mornings tackling the ungroomed backcountry-style trails, which felt adventurous and untouched. Afternoons were for cruising the groomers. Cannon's aerial tramway is a highlight; riding it up gave panoramic views of Franconia Notch that were breathtaking, especially with the holiday lights twinkling below. As the only guest, I had the slopes practically to myself early in the day – talk about a skier's dream! The indoor pool and spa were absolute standouts. After skiing, I'd head straight there to unwind. The pool is spacious and heated, with that old-school charm – think tiled floors and mural-painted walls evoking Austrian Alps. I swam laps in complete solitude, followed by a soak in the hot tub. The spa area includes saunas and basic treatments, and it all felt wonderfully restorative. No crowds meant I could linger as long as I wanted, turning it into my personal wellness sanctuary. Dining was simple but satisfying. The on-site pub served hearty meals with a nod to the resort's Austrian roots – I enjoyed wiener schnitzel one night and a classic New England clam chowder another. Since I was alone, the staff often chatted with me, sharing stories about the resort's history (like its founding by an Austr"

Mittersill Alpine Resort ★★
"This resort is huge and has so many amenities… but they are outdated and there was no one there. It seems like it was probably an amazing place at one point, but they’ve let it go. We stayed in room 225 with five people for a family reunion about 30 minutes away near Plymouth. Because of that, the location wasn’t particularly convenient for us, though it might be ideal for those visiting Cannon Mountain or the Franconia area. The unit was accessible for a grandparent using a walker, which was helpful. As others have mentioned, the resort and room felt very dated. The game room was a fun option for the kids, though we did lose a few coins in the machines. The indoor pool had a pipe dripping into it—possibly rain-related—and the hot tubs weren’t warm, with one seeming a bit questionable. The sofa bed was extremely uncomfortable due to the springs, so I ended up just sleeping on the couch itself, which was tolerable. The kitchenette was well stocked as others have described, and the refrigerator, coffee maker, and microwave all worked fine—those were the only appliances we used. One notable detail: the room does not have air conditioning, but we were able to open the windows, which helped. We stayed Friday to Sunday during the last weekend in June, while a triathlon was happening next door. Despite that, the resort seemed nearly empty. They clearly state the limited front desk hours, and we were never there when the pub was open, so we can’t comment on that. One unique issue we had was a blown fuse that knocked out the lights in both bathrooms. We called maintenance late Saturday night, and someone came within five minutes to fix it, which we appreciated."
