The receptionist when we checked in to the hotel room, she a young lady wasn't helpful at all, she didn't inform us where to go for our evening meal or anything. And seem remotely bothered about our issues, no apology or nothing. Also the staff in the spa reception were quite abrupt and not very welcoming to us. There was a broken tile and also a wobbly tile which was dangerous near the foot spa. Broken tiles in the steam room also. When we arrived in the spa area around 12.30, there was empty glasses left on the tables outside and was still there when we went back outside at 5.15. Our massages were very good and we compliment the ladies who gave us those. Our evening meal and breakfast were absolutely delicious so compliments to the chef. The cleanliness of the windows in our room were not ideal, had children's handprints on them. Unfortunately there were cobwebs in the restaurant in various places, which wasn't ideal. It felt like the hotel was overall in desperate need of a refresh.

My husband booked to stay here for my birthday. We had a lovely relaxing stay. The staff were friendly and professional and make you feel welcome. There is definitely an aura of calm throughout the hotel and the grounds are beautiful, full of trees and wildlife. Reception staff were welcoming and warmly greeted us. The spa facilities are ok, I liked the garden room and herbal sauna, although I was disappointed there was no jacuzzi. There is a tranquility area where you can go and relax after your massage but there was a noisy air conditioning unit in there and no music playing so it was a bit off putting. There was nice cold water available that was regularly topped up. It was my husband’s first time getting a massage and he was nervous but the lady made him feel at ease. I had a wonderful facial from Marcus, it was the best facial I’ve had! I left that room feeling like I was floating! He was really friendly and respectful, even bringing me a glass of water afterwards. The food was excellent, I felt it was a little on the pricey side but we had a voucher included in our stay so it wasn't too bad. The room was comfortable but dated, I was disappointed that there was no conditioner or moisturiser in the room either, and no little extras like cotton buds etc however there was body wash and shampoo provided. The shower is nice, powerful and adjustable shower head. The bed was really comfortable and we slept well. There was no drinking water in the room, there is a tap outside the room with still and sparkling water ‘on draught’ but this was very warm and undrinkable. There was an ice bucket provided but nowhere to get ice from. Breakfast was great and very delicious! Overall we had a nice stay here, and we left feeling relaxed and refreshed. Thank you

I was really looking forward to the spa package booked for my birthday along with my mother. The spa had run out of slippers which wasn’t great. We weren’t told about the relaxation or garden room to go after our treatments. We were given no after treatment advice. The pool was basic with NO jacuzzi!!! The thermal journey was very disappointing and extremely tiny with one part of it broken with a sign saying out of order! No cups to get water either. Treatment was nice but all the majority of the staff weren’t pleasant at all especially the guy getting me a coffee! The room was awful. The smell was vile like old and musty. There were stains on both of the seats in the window, mould in the bathroom and by the window. The other chair in the room was all ripped. To be given such a poor quality room considering the price of the package was just unbelievable. It was also a double when we asked for a twin. The only decent thing was the evening meal. Good quality and very tasty. Breakfast was ok. I’d not have paid it if it wasn’t included in the package as it seemed a massive rip off. The staff again though were miserable looking no smiles no niceties. The bar was ok but again the furniture was very tired and worn with rips and stains. It’s a shame a nice place has rooms/furniture like that as it really brings the feel of the place down and I’m my opinion it is very poor! I’d not be returning and I definitely wouldn’t recommend the spa package to anyone. Shame!

Visited the hotel as a late Mother’s Day treat. Grounds are lovely and hotel reception staff were friendly and helpful on arrival. Spa and treatments were amazing, with a nice relaxed atmosphere. Loved that we could use the spa before check in and in the morning before check out! Had a twin room which was a good size with a great view. The room had good amenities such as hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities and an iron, there are also still and sparkling water taps on the corridors which were a nice touch. Having read reviews on parts of the hotel being outdated, I get what they mean but I feel it’s more that the hotel has a rustic feel to it and everywhere was kept clean and tidy. The restaurant staff were also kind and helpful but the only thing that let the hotel down in our view, was the food in the restaurant! We had starters from the flavours of India section of the menu, which were nice enough, however the mains were very bland tasting and basic. For the price of the food, and experience in similar hotels, we would have expected better quality and something a little nicer. Also, I feel the allergens were unclear and would be beneficial to have them on the menu rather than in a folder. Breakfast was well organised and the continental had lots of choice and some gluten free options. The full breakfast was nice and a good size, again lacking in quality a little for the standard of hotel. Some of the drink prices on the bar menu were a little too inflated, We expect prices in hotels to be high as they always are, also it’s obviously dependant on what you like to drink and how fussy you are etc. Not a huge deal to most, but £56 for a bottle of wine that costs £17 to buy just seems a little too excessive! The espresso martini’s were fab tho! Overall We had a great stay and would definitely return to the spa and hotel, just maybe eat elsewhere for our evening meal.

I saw some reviews stating the rooms were "dated" , not at all. Traditional and fitting for the building there in is far more my opinion. Delightful stay with the best nights sleep I've had in a long time. Breakfast was lovely and the spa and massage were heavenly. Staff were all helpful and friendly. We will be returning ! The water station in the corridor was a lovely touch as well.

I booked a Super Deluxe Double room at Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel & Spa for my husband’s birthday, hoping for a special and memorable stay. Unfortunately, the experience was quite disappointing from the moment we arrived. The room, which was marketed as “Super Deluxe,” was very underwhelming in size—no bigger than a standard room, just with a coffee machine and some Elemis products. I had expected something more spacious and special, especially considering it was for a celebration. I expressed my concerns to reception straight away and was told they would check for availability the next morning. When I followed up, I was told no upgrades were available, which was disheartening as I had hoped to decorate the room for the occasion. On top of that, the room was freezing on arrival. I called reception to ask about the heating and was informed it was on a boiler system and wouldn’t be switched on. I ended up feeling unwell from how cold it was. My husband spoke to reception the next morning and was told a heater would be arranged—but it never arrived. The room also had maintenance issues. The headboard was peeling, and bits of the faux leather would flake off onto our pillows and into our hair every time we leaned back. I reported this to reception but nothing was done. It was very frustrating having to deal with that constantly throughout the stay. To make matters worse, I had pre-ordered a chocolate plate for my husband’s birthday. It never arrived until I chased it up myself at reception on the second day. The receptionist seemed surprised it hadn’t been delivered, which again shows a lack of attention to detail. Food service was another letdown. Despite mentioning I was vegetarian at the time of booking, I was served meat options during both dinner and afternoon tea. When I pointed this out during tea, the waiter seemed visibly annoyed and shook his head while walking away, which made the experience feel uncomfortable and awkward. By the time the vegetarian alternative arrived, I had lost my appetite. Overall, the stay felt like a series of disappointments. I genuinely feel bad that my husband’s birthday weekend didn’t turn out the way I had planned. For the price and reputation of the hotel, I expected a much higher standard of service and attention to detail.
