The outdoor areas of this hotel are amazing. The grounds and pools are stunning and very well kept. This hotel is perfectly placed in a quiet area of Costa Calma and the new lagoon/outdoor gym and leisure addition further added to the relaxed atmosphere this hotel brings. We loved staying here and will definitely be returning.

This hotel stay ticked all the boxes for us. We stayed a 7 night all inclusive. We found it perfect for a relaxing break. Lovely friendly staff, very clean rooms, the structure and design of the hotel is Amazing. Happy with the pools, the food and wine, and beer lovely. Our favourite spot was chilling in the pool bar overlooking the sea where lovely Jonathan looked after us. We only ventured out once to the right of the walk to the beach where there is another hotel. Where I used their bathroom. I was shocked at the difference in standards and cleanliness. Made our hotel look like a palace. We had checked reviews on here and seen the negative one's my advice is take no notice. Do not understand where they are coming from. Could not fault this holiday. So thank you all at R2 Rio Calma Hotel and Spa. From Sharon and David xx

We just returned after a week’s stay at the R2 Rio Calma and had a fantastic, relaxing time. The hotel building has everything needed for a perfect holiday and pool area and grounds are simply beautiful. The ongoing construction work was hardly noticeable and did not at all distrupt the peace during our stay. The hotel is clean and well maintained. I was reading previous reviews and I don’t agree at all with some of the comments. I found all the staff I interacted with to be very helpful. Juan at the lobby bar deserves a special mention, he made a fuss of our 7 year old daughter and she felt grown up with her San Francisco mocktail. Lore from the kids club is also an asset to the hotel, she was fantastic with our daughter and she enjoyed spending time doing activities with her. The staff on reception were also very helpful. The food in the restaurant is vary varied and of good quality. The outside dining area is very pleasant with a lovely sea view. The live musicians playing some evenings gave it a wonderful, romantic feel. There is a wide selection of drinks in the all inclusive package. The only areas for improvement for me would be: - there was some sand at the bottom of the pools and ideally this would be cleaned more regularly - there would be a better selection of food at the pool bar, maybe some lighter options - more information on where the entertainment / activities are taking place (the tv screen shows only the times) Thank you for a great relaxing holiday. We made some lovely memories. Sharon, Terry & Olivia

My friend and I stayed here for five nights in June and we loved every single day. The hotel is enormous and beautiful, filled with exotic cacti and flowers. There’s a cold outdoor pool and a heated outdoor pool and we had no issues obtaining sun beds. The selection of foods was astonishing and the bread rolls were fresh every day! All staff were super friendly, from the lovely man behind reception, the energetic entertainment team who did poolside Zumba, Aqua Aerobics and a foam party!! The lovely man behind the reception bar who made us laugh on our first evening. There’s also a selection of shops within the hotel with super reasonable prices. The lady who works in the accessories shop was so friendly! Reception sorted our departure coach for us without even having to ask and popped the note confirming pick up time under the door. We were full board so all drinks were paid for with a wrist band which got charged back to the room and sorted at checkout which was so easy! I loved this hotel and would happily return there again next week if I could!

Overall, we very much enjoyed our week's stay at this hotel. The hotel itself is lovely and very well presented and maintained, with staff maintaining the grounds and gardens daily to ensure it felt and looked lovely. A good mix of facilities and activities were on offer for everyone, including 3 outdoor pools, one heated, one unheated infinity pool and a kids pool. The beach is only a 5-10 minute walk away. We could also see the hotel was having construction work on an additional pool and gym area, which I'm sure will be great in the future. The food on offer in the main buffet restaurant was nice, with a great selection and different choices on themed nights. One improvement would be better heat lamps at the buffet, as occasionally the food could have done with being slightly warmer. The room was nice and very clean, with comfortable beds and good bathroom facilities though it was slightly tired and could benefit from a little maintenance (balcony door not closing fully - addressed swiftly at the time, which was good; other general wear and tear). The walls did also seem a little thin as you could hear people in neighbouring rooms, though overall it did not have a significant impact on our sleep. The safe in the room requires an additional cost of €7/day - something we felt should be standard for guests to ensure security and privacy and is something that is offered for free at many other hotels. Generally, staff at the hotel were very helpful, especially in getting minor issues addressed rapidly to ensure our stay was as pleasant as it could be. However, very occasionally it felt like we were being a nuisance and staff were slightly abrupt or rude. For example, when trying to enquire about certain things, such as when we asked if were still able to use the facilities after checking out, as our transfer did not arrive until 4 hours later, we were met with an abrupt response. Though in the end we did get the answers we were looking for. In summary, it was a lovely stay at a lovely hotel and I would recommend it to others. The facilities were great and we very much enjoyed our week. There are just a few points where some improvement is needed which is what brought our rating down slightly. But this could just be unlucky and I would still recommend it to anyone considering it.

Exceptional 6 nights at this fabulous hotel. The staff, food, room, pools and communal areas were all fantastic. We went all inclusive and most drinks were included and it was made very clear at reception what cocktails were included- there were many and we sampled them all. This hotel had authentic food from the island so an abundance of fish and local produce was excellent- I will miss the fresh fruit and yogurt station for breakfast. The location is quiet but we visited in April so out of season but the weather was fantastic. Guests are predominantly European and German/French but after travelling around German hotels this explains the quality service. Thank you for a fabulous stay with my 17 year old son- unforgettable memories were made here. I advise you explore the island - bus service was great and the zoo was well worth a visit. If your avid walkers walk south along the white deserted beaches for 22km but take water as there are no stops as you get further down. Closest beach is a 15 minute walk south to white sands or 10 minutes walk to a black pebble beach with water sports. If you like windsurfing this is the place to visit. Thanks to all the hardworking staff at this hotel- you really made our holiday!

I am just completing day 2 of a 5 day stay and as a solo traveller, my experience is not good. I have only found 1 member of staff who has been friendly and that was a waiter yesterday. The reception and spa staff have been miserable and unwelcoming. I sat through dinner tonight and was completely ignored- noone offered me a drink or engaged with me. The bar staff in the cocktail lounge are equally abysmal. I had to go to the bar to order my own gin & tonic. The drink was poured with no choice of gins offered and I had to ask the member of staff what he had actually served me. The sink in my room has also broken today. This is definitely NOT a 4 star break and the quality of service is dire.

Unfortunately, my stay at Hotel R2 Río Calma fell far below expectations. I wouldn’t send my dogs here to stay. Check-in was disorganized and the service inconsistent from the start. My room’s air conditioning didn’t work, and despite reporting it multiple times, I was later told the hotel doesn’t actually have air conditioning — something that should be communicated upfront, especially in a warm climate. I was advised to “open the balcony door” instead, which didn’t feel safe or practical. Plus the foliage blocking the window I wouldn’t have been able to feel a breeze at all. And the mattress was hard as a rock, super uncomfortable and I didn’t get any sleep. The issues continued from there — luggage storage wasn’t secure, guests had to pay extra to use in-room safes (a first in all my travels), and I even noticed a cat roaming the lobby and hallways, which is a major concern for anyone with allergies. To make matters worse, I spotted a roach in the breakfast restaurant the next morning. Communication within the staff was inconsistent, dinner reservations were mixed up, and service was lackluster — especially disappointing given this was a hosted stay for travel professionals. While the location and design of the hotel have potential, the lack of hospitality, cleanliness, and comfort made it a property I, unfortunately, would not recommend anyone staying here. As I checked out a day early and had a better experience at an airport hotel.
