Sleeping Ute Mountain Motel

Was very dubious when we pulled up. However, travelling from the UK, we did not know the area. The place looked very run down and there was nobody on reception. We waited about 5 minutes and Joy turned up. She was most apologetic as she had had to pop out. We were early anyway as check- in was from 3pm and it was only about 2.30pm. Joy gave us a choice of rooms and having been a bit dubious in the beginning was really pleasantly surprised at the depth of cleanliness in the rooms. The room we chose was extremely clean, as was the bathroom. The bed linen, towels etc were spotless and the bed was really comfortable. Joy explained they were slowly renovating the place and with the plans they have in mind, I have no doubt that it will be a beautiful place to stay when finished, but like all things it takes time. However, in the meantime, please give this place a chance and not judge it by first impressions. Joy is a wonderful host and cannot do enough to ensure her guests are comfortable.

The staff at Sleeping Ute Mountain Motel - Joy & Brian - are friendly, accomodating and hospitable!! If you need a place just to lay down and lay your head, no frills, and on a budget, I would 100% recommend this place!! I was on a road trip to hike at Mesa Verde before I made a trip to Moab and Arches. The room was clean, the bed I was in had a brand new mattress and it has a nic retro 1980's old school charm. Most importanly, the room was queit and I was able to do some work. Joy was great and responsive. She even called me to invite me for a fresh pot of coffee. This motel has been in Brian's family for years. Today, Joy and Brian manage the property and are curently in the process of making renovations and upgrades. If you are arriving late in your travels, Joy will work with you and make sure you are taken care of. Joy and Brian really do care about your well being.

Classic '70s motel. Incredible location. The view of Sleeping Ute is amazing. Sitting out back watching as the sun goes down - superb. (They own 100 acres of beautiful scrub/forest land). The rooms are absolutely clean and properly stocked. Antique/period furniture. You'll note negative reviews. If you want the sterile, mass produced, soulless bedroom, then go else where. Here, absolutely clean. Excellent conversations with staff (owners). Quiet and left the window open for the night. Sweet, sweet air. So pick it. Unique? Mass produced? When/if I land in Cortez again, I'll be back. (Don't forget. Easy access to Mesa Verde.)
