Laguna Lodge

Laguna Lodge

📍 Tortuguero, Limon. Frente a Laguna principal de Tortuguero, Colorado
★★★ 8.3 (61 reviews)

"We enjoyed our stay at Laguna Lodge, the grounds were beautiful and the gorgeous beach was just a stone's throw away. The room was quite basic, it was very hot and we struggled a bit with just a fan, however the pools, bars and restaurant were very good. The bars served the best Pina Coladas we've ever had! Be prepared for some geckos in your room (they are harmless and they'll help keep the mozzie numbers down!) and possibly a creepy crawly or two. Take a walk around the grounds after dark with a torch (don't forget to top up your mozzie repellent before you do!), you will find loads of toads by the pool, hear frogs in the trees, and if you walk through the butterfly garden you might spot a red eyed tree frog! Being in the rainforest, it is very loud during the night, I would recommend bringing ear plugs if you're a light sleeper. I cannot begin to explain how fantastic the boat tours are, I got up for the 5.30am tour and also the 8.30am tour and had what I would consider to be one of the best days of my life! The amount of birds and animals we saw was unreal, it was such a magical experience. Our boat driver (I can't remember his real name, I want to say Jacan but we all called him Eagle Eyes!) was brilliant, he spotted so much wildlife and was so lovely. Our tour guide during our stay at Laguna Lodge was Sebastian, he was so helpful and was such a great guy!"

Hotel El Icaco Tortuguero

Hotel El Icaco Tortuguero

📍 200 mts sur plaza de deportes, Tortuguero
★★ 8.4 (26 reviews)

"I loved my stay at this hotel and it was great value. The hotel is a short walk from the centre of town, but this means that it’s really quiet at night and you go to sleep with just the sound of the sea. (Be warned - swimming not allowed here because of dangerous tides. The food was great and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. It was possible to book all the tours and transfers I wanted, including seeing the turtles laying their eggs at night, through the hotel. I had a very big room all to myself which has both air-conditioning and the ceiling fan. There is a small pool and one afternoon. I have time to have my siesta by the pool while a flock of the rare green macaws circled above. Pura Vida!"

Pachira Lodge

Pachira Lodge

📍 Tortuguero, Colorado

"Hotel pick up with a stop near Guapiles for breakfast and then back on the bus to the pier to pick up the river boat. We were worried about luggage weights etc but there was really nothing to worry about. It was a lovely journey and was definitely part of the. ' experience ' . The lodge was great, could have done with aircon tho. A ceiling fan wasn't enough when it was 30 degrees outside and humid !! There were also loads of squashed bugs on the walls and ceiling in the bathroom which was pretty gross! Room 11. Food was good, buffet style but loads of choices. Our group was really friendly, a mixture of Spanish and English speakers. The guide was multilingual but tbh it was a bid tedious waiting for him to say exactly the same in both languages. It would have been better for us (and him) to have a single language group. Pool area was great especially the jacuzzi. The on site nature walk is a must too - there's sloths there!! The trips were great, we discovered a fabulous Tiki Bar on the other side when we went on a trip to the village and beach - just on the right - excellent cocktails! The canal tour by boat was excellent - we saw so much wildlife. The trip back, via boat lunch at Guapiles and then transfers to everyone's next destinations ran like clockwork. It's a well oiled machine. Would definitely stay here again but would ask for a room with aircon next time if they have any. Great lodge!"

"Very simple facility that has come into the years. Very friendly people and short walks to Tortuguero. The pool was just renovated and our stay! Breakfast was only country-typical. I missed at least a toast and marmelade! The dinner was tasty and well made. I would classify this lodge more in a category of youth hostels !"

Hotel Serendipity Tortuguero

Hotel Serendipity Tortuguero

📍 1809 Playa, Limón Province, Tortuguero
★★ 9.0 (36 reviews)

"Out of the 29 countries I’ve visited and all of the places I’ve stayed, this hotel has THE BEST hospitality. Their communication was exceptional from the beginning. We missed the last public boat to Tortuguero and they helped arrange a private boat for us. Our rooms were always clean and the staff was so friendly. It was really nice to have comfortable beds, air conditioning and hot water if we wanted it. When I come back to Tortuguero, I will definitely stay here again. Thank you so much for everything!"

Tortuga Lodge

Tortuga Lodge

📍 Across from the airstrip, 1 mile north of the Town of Tortuguero Limon Tortuguero, Colorado
★★★★ 9.2 (78 reviews)

"This was the most disappointing experience of our trip. While the location and ground staff are great, the management is exploitative and the "Spa" standards are appalling. 1. DECEPTIVE SPA & GROSS NEGLIGENCE: Do not be misled by the word "Spa." It is an empty room with two tables—no shower, no water, no facilities. Even worse was the massage: the therapist had long nails (a major hygiene and safety violation) and was scrolling on her phone with one hand while massaging me with the other. When reported, the reception was cold and dismissive. They simply do not care about professional standards or guest safety. 2. EXPLOITATIVE BILLING: We had a guest cancel for health reasons. The management’s response? Total greed. They forced us to pay the full price for all 3 nights for a person who wasn't there—charging us for 3 days of "all-inclusive" meals never eaten, excursions never taken, and even the extra bed fee. This is not hospitality; it is a "take the money and run" strategy. 3. UNACCEPTABLE FRONT DESK: The receptionist this evening was insulting in her indifference. No empathy, no solution, just a cold attitude that clearly signaled our satisfaction was irrelevant. 4. THE ONLY REDEEMING FACTOR: It is a tragedy that excellent staff like Luis (waiter), our brilliant guide Luis Torres, and the housekeeping team work for such a poorly managed establishment. They deserve better than a management that treats guests as mere bank accounts. FINAL WARNING: This lodge is a tourist trap hiding behind premium prices. You are not a guest here; you are a transaction. With so many ethical and professional lodges in Tortuguero, do not waste your money here. You will regret the lack of respect and the substandard service."

Casa Marbella

Casa Marbella

📍 In front of the Catholic Church, Colorado
★★ 8.8 (61 reviews)

"Prior to booking here I had considered booking at a lodge out of 'town' but I'm super glad I chose Casa Marbella - the boat dropped us straight to their dock, they were smack in the middle of the village (which is only one street about a mile long) so super easy for looking around and getting tea / drinks etc, and directly opposite a track to the beach. Also really close to the boat stop for going on the canal cruises and leaving Tortuguero. It was lovely having a dining setting next to the canal where breakfast (included in your stay) was served each morning. The rooms were comfy, clean, and the shower good. As others have mentioned there was a little noise from the street at night. Two nights is perfect in Tortuguero, you only need a Sinac pass for one day as you can do a canal tour in the morning, come back for breakfast, then do the jaguar trail with a guide in the afternoon. Casa Marbella organized this for us for $35 us pp"

"The accommodation is functional and only a few steps away from the beautiful beach (inviting for long walks). We were delighted of the friendliness and helpfulness of our hosts. The breakfast offered in a little restaurant in the centre was very tasty."

Valverde Glamping & Ecolodge

"Beautiful glamping by the water in Tortuguero. To get there, you need to travel by boat for about an hour—this journey itself is already very special and beautiful. The tents and cabins are set in a stunning natural environment. In the garden alone we already saw various animals such as toucans, monkeys, and iguanas. From the dining area you have a beautiful view over the water. Breakfast was included and very tasty. For tours, you were picked up directly at the glamping site, and there was a free shuttle to the village. The morning canoe tour is highly recommended. Truly a stunning and unique place with super friendly staff."

Aninga Lodge Hotels in Colorado

Aninga Lodge

"How exciting is a two hour boat journey to get to your lodge hotel? Very, and so beautiful and peaceful. The lodge itself (and its sister lodges) are very low impact and can barely be seen from the water. This is the newest of three, apparently, and you skirt round one of the others when on the walking trail. So, luxurious it is not. The cabins are clean and spacious, but note there is no aircon, fridge, much in the way of toiletries or hairdryer (can be obtained from reception, but they only have 3!) Coffee and water is a collect-it-yourself effort from outside the dining room. You have to cart your own luggage to your cabin and there are 3 quite steep steps up to it. These are observations, not criticisms, but I do wish there had been an info leaflet in the room with meal times, how to operate the safe (with a key, not the buttons). The ceiling fan was effective, although as there were only two speeds - off and full on - it got quite cool in the middle of the night. The little verandah with rocking chairs outside each cabin was lovely. Meals were taken in set groups in a room rather like a school dining hall and food was served accordingly. Absolutely no pretence at presentation, but it did feel home cooked and was surprisingly tasty (although unless you got there at the beginning of the service it was always tepid, which I found to generally be the case in Costa Rica) and which bothered me slightly from a food hygiene aspect. But I suffered no harm! The pool area was beautiful, with an attractive large bar and other seating areas. As it was the end of the dry season, we were blessed with clear, hot sunshine in which to enjoy it. The activities laid on by the hotel were outstanding, and Jorge our guide, in addition to being an excellent organiser of luggage, people, embarcation into the boats etc was an absolute encyclopaedia of wildlife knowledge. This is the strength of this location - the surroundings and the wildlife. To be woken at 0500 with an almighty crash on your roof (spider monkey missing its branch!) and to have a family of them playing in the trees next to you is a privilege indeed. The early morning river trip and the nature walk were wonderful. The excursion to Tortuguero village was better than I anticipated (although it was very, very hot). I took plenty of bug spray and was not bitten once. A torch and some rudimentary Spanish also proved useful."

Laguna Lodge ★★★
"Set between the canal and the ocean, this hotel is only accessible by boat. It is also in the rain forest so humidity is very high. The rooms are in blocks around very nice gardens with wildlife all around. There are a couple of pools set in the gardens with towels provided. It is a very short walk to the beach but do not go into the sea and there is the chance of crocodiles and sting rays, we were advised to avoid the sea but to enjoy the beach. The rooms are clean and comfortable and there is mosquito netting up at all the windows. The rooms are reasonably basic, but we are in the rain forest - so don't expect air conditioning in the rooms. There is a big fan. The restaurant was very good and all our meals were a good variety. Drinks are a little expensive, but that is the case in most of Costa Rica. The tours from the hotel are amazing. The staff were very friendly and welcoming - we would recommend this hotel."

Hotel El Icaco Tortuguero ★★
"I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. It is perfectly located in front of the sea, by the beach (you cannot swim there and they remind you so) away from the nice little village so it is very quiet. I had to change my booking date and they didn't charge me the extra night. They also come to welcome you at the dock to get you to the hotel, which is great service. The rooms are basic but with fan and good wifi to book the park entrance! The staff is super friendly and makes the stay extra special. I did the canoa tour with Roberto and it was great, he knew his stuff. Highly recommended. They also explained to us how to walk in the park and get to the Cerro Tortuguero, which is a must to see the sea, river and canals from up. The walk up is very easy, actually you climb stairs. Very recommended to get a real feel of Tortuguero and Costa RIca."

"We stayed at this location for two nights and had a great time; lots of beautiful colorful birds and wonderful silence, except for the sounds of the jungle and the howler monkeys in the distance, though occasionally taxi boats speeding past! The lodge has no windows but mosquito nets, so you are truly close to nature! Milene, the owner, picked us up in San José and guided us to Tortuguero, where we were welcomed upon arrival by Bismarck. We had a lovely stay! We did two excursions: one boat trip and a tour of the town of Tortuguero, both with the guide. The beds were very good, the shower fine, and the food simple but tasty! And truly Costa Rican."

"Sweet little gem of spot in Tortuguero. Super friendly staff with spotlessly clean and very comfortable rooms. They have a great guide in Bernie. Watch spider monkeys clamber over the roof with toucans and macaws overhead -- paradise!"

"Not a positive experience so far. I dont really understand the fuss and prices. Our arrival was a disaster - we were sent 2 pages long emails with small print upon booking and in the midst of all that info was the key element: only one boat access per day at 1030am. As we have little connectivity on our trip, we get rafts of emails at every download and missed this crucial info. There was a laconic « you have not confirmed your spot on the boat » follow up via the email thread which we missed and despite our numerous requests via whatsapp to understand access, we finally received a « the boat is leaving now » message. So we had to pay $350 for a private transfer. We would have expected a whatsapp or call to make sure it was clear we had to be on the 1030 boat! This happened to a number of other guests too. Just lazy. Another unpleasant momét on arrival: we had filled in the questionnaire upon booking (2 adults 1 child) and had booked tariffs accordingly. However we were told we had only booked for a couple and had to add $125 per night for the child! We said absolutely not. We were made to feel like we were weaseling prices down but they were just trying their luck. They apologised later. The buildings are old and have a holiday club feel with stacked rooms and cafeteria like vibes. We are stuck on the small property which needs a full refurb. Bedding and bathrooms are nice though. Very expensive tours (£125 for 2hr kayak!). Pool is old school and not for swimming. No yoga. A massage shed which really isnt a spa as they label it. Drab, poorly run and overpriced."

"It's diffucult to rate Casa Marbella because it depends on what you expect. If your looking for a place with spacious rooms, clean and with a friendly staff this is perfect. There can be some noise from the street. ( When we visited all the shops and bars closed at 9pm. So not that big of a problem) Or from neighbours. The breakfast is very limited. Choice between panckakes and scrambled eggs ( no ham, bacon,...) They have a beautiful deck to sit and have a drink. In the evening we got to see racoons in the trees. Since visiting tortuguero takes a max of 2 nights. I think Casa Marbella is defenitly a good option."

"This was very beautiful location with amazing gardens. The staff was a pleasure to deal with an very informative about the surrounding area. They have z a beautiful walkway through Jungle. The staff helped organize a spa day for our group and even helped get us there by water taxi. The owners had fresh drinks waiting us and our arrival with smiling faces. Very welcoming and accommodating. This is a must for any nature lovers or naturalist. Everything you could want to see in an eco tourist environment in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 can be found on these grounds. Frogs, birds, butterflies, monkeys, and many many more. This is a Top Notch place and should be a 5 Star rated place. They also have a beautiful pool in this remote jungle location. Can not wait to go back and visit this Gem again."
