We stopped here for 1 night food was superb, nice busy pub good atmosphere and lady running the place so lovely and so welcoming. All the staff were great. Room was lovely, nice bedding and overall great stay. Thank you

The fabulous experience started as soon as we arrived. The location is a bit off the beaten track, and all the better for that. A four century old building nestled in the middle of the village. The welcome was warm and welcoming for the evervescant Sam, who was brilliant. The room was comfortable, with a big window for fresh air, a comfy bed, and lovely modern bathroom. The whole place was spotlessly clean. The food here is superlative. I had lamb cutlets twice, once just as cutlets, once in a peppercorn sauce. There is game and fish available. The quality is outstanding, and good hearty country portions. A warm atmospheric evening in the bar, sets the tone of a stay at the String of Horses. The staff were super friendly, the aforementioned Sam, Kirsty, (I think) were awesome, but that doesn't diminish everyone we had contact with. This place is an absolute credit to the owner, Colin, and his amazing team, the highlight to a working visit to Cumbria. As a foot note, outside of Carlisle, its location is brilliant for the Lake District, Gretna and Lockerbie, and Hadrians Wall. Even Newcastle is within about an hour! I whole heartedly recommend the place, and will definitely be back if Im in the area. Bravo String of Horses. An exceptional stay. Thank you

A very friendly welcome from Anna and chef Garry. Comfortable room, telly aerial needed a fix. Highlight of the visit was the evening meal. An accidental serving of squid (thanks, it was lovely), the actual order of king prawns in Nduja butter was superb and followed by probably the best fillet steak I have ever eaten served with green beans, Camembert mash and a mushroom and beef marrow sauce. A meal that was savoured and will live long in the memory. A fine full English to end our visit.

The staff - special mention for Sam - were helpful and there when needed. I forgot to pack our toothbrushes and we were supplied with them free of charge. The bedroom was small but it's an old coaching inn so many irregularities to be expected. The bathroom was big! Dinner and breakfast were very good and the location is good. Not far to the lake district or borders and very peaceful in a small village.

Quiet, remote setting near Hadrian’s Wall and lovely scenic drives. Authentic 17th century coaching inn with lots of historic charm in the common areas. We stayed 5 days in the clean, comfortable family quarters with plenty of room and a huge shower. Nice, friendly staff. Really good food. The eggs benedict at breakfast was super. Plenty of free on-site parking. Heads up to foreigners: Do your business in GB Pounds. Although we were not asked our preference, we received a 4.95% upcharge to convert payment to our local currency.

Review Lovely visit. Charismatic place steeped in a sense of history in a quote location. The room eras wonderful and I love a big TV. Food was lovely.. Wonderful stay
