Chateau de Bellefontaine

We booked this hotel because it was in a château and it looked romantic and unique .However there were many details lacking overall. Firstly avoid the restaurant at all costs even though the three course meal was only €29. The food preparation and quality was terrible. Please see attached photos. The salmon I had was overcooked from frozen salmon and the greens were likely frozen greens that were boiled to mush and no longer green. The risotto was just rice coated in some weird cream and had some tasteless pieces of chicken slapped on top. We did not finish the food. They clearly also need more staff as our receptionist was doubling up as a waitress, and we noticed that there were some waits and gaps in service. The room was compact and clean, but the details were lacking. For example, the fixtures and appliances were the cheapest variety possible and didn’t match the Luxe feel that the hotel is going for. The location is slightly out of town and a 20 minute walk to all the main sites in the old town. The grounds were tidy and very pretty in photos.

Easy check in experience. Room was comfortable and very nice bathroom. Yes, it appears that usually one person has to serve tables in the restaurant, serve in the bar, and answer the telephone in reception. And yes there is a delay between meal courses. BUT the food was delicious although the menu is rather limited. Breakfast was very good and even provided batter to make ones own crepes. Within easy 15 min walk of town centre for alternative eating options. To summarise, yes it is quirky, but we are going again in 2026

Aesthetically beautiful hotel. Grounds have designated areas for relaxation. Cows & donkeys are in nearby pastures. 20-minute walk from the train station. Safe, 15-minute walk from the downtown restaurants and museums. Room has all the necessary amenities. Great on-site breakfast and dinner, when available. Air conditioning in room not available during August, but standing, circulating fan in the room. Mold in bathroom, probably from a lack of ventilation. Customer service from front desk improved during our 3-day stay.
