A lovely boutique hotel in a peaceful part of the lake district. Superbly appointed rooms thoughtfully designed with the guest in mind, compact but beautifully put together. The car park was the only challenging element but the food at dinner was tremendous. A very friendly team and a wonderful stay, thank you!

We had read about this place and we booked for a stop off on a longer journey. It was fantastic: a warm welcome, bright clean room, comfortable bed. Best of all was the brilliant meal, picture pretty and tasted wonderful. We ordered different dishes and shared half each. So many highlights but the cheese custard amuse bouche and the turbot with zingy lemon gel potatoes were my favourites. My partner loved the lamb and the honey sponge with damson. Highly recommend a stay here. We will be back.

Very good food /kitchen. We stayed 2 nights and had the 7 course tasting on the 1st night and friends joined us for the 3 course on the 2nd night. This is slightly deceptive as lots of little extras arrive as well. The food is as well prepared as anywhere we have eaten and definitely deserves all the accolades it has…..and deserves more! The room we had had everything we needed but was quite small for our 2 night stay. Very helpful and friendly staff and we will visit again.

We dined at 1863 to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary on the 2nd of November. The food, service and atmosphere were just perfect. A truly wonderful evening. Thank you.

Had a wonderful 2 night return stay at 1863. Excellent food and service, nothing was too much for the staff to deal with. Enjoyed both 7 course tasting menu and a la carte dinner. Great breakfasts too. Rooms very comfortable. Do hope to return again.

We had a lovely comfortable stay. The room was warm with a nice view and had a sofa and a very nice bathroom. The food was top notch, beautifully served with excellent wine pairings. Great breakfast. All staff friendly and helpful and helped us check in a little early, which was great as we arrived as storm Amy was building up. It was so good to be warm and dry!

Our 4th visit, stayed in the ground floor suite which was a very spacious and well appointed room, and a nice place to go back to at the end of each day. The only negative, which they can do nothing about, is that there is next to no natural light in the room, so not so good during the day, that apart, highly recommended, and far superior to rooms at nearby Askham Hall, reviewed elsewhere.
