I very seldom write reviews but on this occasion, I would like to wholeheartedly recommend staying at Hotell Are Fjällsätra. My Ernevi and her staff are very helpful and friendly. A variety of people stay at the hotel: families, couples (young and older), groups of friends. The atmosphere is homely and laid back. The hotel is charming, homely and very clean. The facade is no longer yellow but green, see pictures! I stayed there with my children aged 13 and 7. We were in the room called Prostinnan; we had a lovely view to the valley. The room was spacious enough, it has a double bed and they added an extra bed for the little one. We had dinner at the hotel every evening. They serve a two-course set menu, that changes every evening. It pretty much alternates between fish and meat. There is always a side of vegetables. The dishes are Swedish modern cuisine. They are very good. My 7 year-old was tired in the evening and did not want to taste new things so the staff arranged for a child dish to be served to her. In the morning, the breakfast is excellent, with lots of choice, including gluten-free options. A word on the location, Undersåker. It is not Are, but don't be put off by the location! I didn't rent a car and never felt I needed one. The train station is very close to the hotel (7 minutes on foot) and the bus stop is even closer (3 minutes on foot), it's in front of the hotel! We decided to ski in Rödkullen, which is one of the ski areas of Are. All the ski areas are connected. Rödkullen is perfect to beginners and medium ability skiers (green and blue slopes), but there are also red and black slopes nearby for more expert skiers. The app Länstrafiken Jämtland gives accurate times for the bus and the train. One little tip: go from Undersåker Fjällsätra to Are Resecentrum, then walk for 8 minutes to Kabinbanan (instead of waiting for the ski bus) and either ski from there or take the ski bus to Rödkullen. In Rödkullen, Are Skiduthyrning, run by Stefan and Erika, offers a great service to those who want to rent skiing equipment and take lessons. I very much recommend them too. The three of us made great progress in just a few days. Are Skyduthyrning is conveniently located next to the bus stop and parking lot, in the same building as the main restaurant, which offers very good lunches and snacks, for reasonable prices. In Rödkullen, there is also a ski school for people with handicaps. We didn't use their service but I was very impressed to see them accompany people with down syndrome, blind or unable to walk on tours (the latter on a ski wheelchair). The joys of alpine ski are for everyone! That school is called Totalskidskolan. Coming back to Undersåker, the hotel is conveniently located - within walking distance - nearby Are Sleddog (lovely tours on a sled drawn by dogs, super fun, but don't hesitate to add layers because it gets really cold during the tour!) and Are Candle makers (they organise candle making sessions for
