San Rafael Hotel

The interior and courtyard spaces are impeccably tidy, beautiful, and well decorated. The fountains throughout the hotel provide a wonderful atmosphere. The breakfast in the courtyard is very enjoyable and the room was perfect. The only minor complaint some may have is the lack of air-conditioning in the hot season, but the fan supplied in the room was enough for me and most will not find it a problem at all.

The property and staff were 5 stars. The only thing that was not 5 stars was no A/C. Really not an issue because the temperature was comfortable. Even without a gym, one was within a short walking distance. Also restaurants surround the property.

This hotel has the most central location, especially for the price. The room was spacious. Parking is not convenient, even temporarily to unload suitcases.

The intimate San Rafael Hotel is an alluring oasis of tranquility just around the corner from the famous Arco de Santa Catalina. I spent four blissful nights in the spacious La Merced junior suite (room 4), pampered by its historic interior design, comfortable king-size bed, beautifully tiled rain shower, and plush robe. The ornate main courtyard was just outside the door, with several tables along the periphery for breakfast, and savoring the delicious food while admiring the fountains and lush plants was a peaceful way to start each day. A nice bonus to this room is that the two back windows face the second courtyard's fountain, which when turned on creates a wonderful effect of the gentle sounds of a bubbling stream. They also provide a good crossbreeze when the front window is open as well. Since the room is interior in the courtyard, there is absolutely no street noise, so I slept soundly. The staff members of the hotel are friendly and helpful, and if you need something like tea, sparkling water, or a beer during the day or evening, they have beverages on hand in the kitchen. They even stored some leftover dinner food for me in the fridge and then kindly reheated it for me the next evening. Overall, this was a charming boutique hotel in one of the most picturesque cities I've ever visited, and I look forward to another stay next time I am in Guatemala!
