Insight Resort Ahangama

Insight Resort Ahangama ★★★★

📍 No 67 Matara Rd, Ahangama

"The hotel is in a great location, right by the sea. You can see surfers and swim directly in the sea. The swimming pool in the backyard is also very large, but the facilities are relatively old and the staff speak loudly in the corridor."

Lum Residence

Lum Residence ★★★

📍 X9J3+929, Ahangama

"Want to experience a surfing vibe, live a slow life, and receive excellent service? Lum Residence offers you the opportunity to relax and "slow down" in comfort, recharging your mind and body. Firstly, the hotel is conveniently located: set back from the main coastal road, but about a 7-minute walk from Kabalana Beach and the beachfront cafes. Along the way to the ocean, you can easily spot parrots and peacocks strolling or flying past. Secondly, the aesthetically pleasing modern space is pleasing to the eye, compactly landscaped yet tastefully detailed: plenty of greenery, island-style paintings in the rooms and at the bar, authentic decorative elements, and a shop selling souvenirs. Thirdly, you won't feel lonely or disconnected from the hotel's mini-community, as it offers a wealth of entertainment for any weather and a variety of leisure activities: a Russian banya, table tennis, a clean swimming pool, yoga, and much more. The hotel management is also incredibly engaged, attentive to each guest's comfort and well-being. The entire team communicates with you and provides feedback. Fourthly, the hotel's location effectively weeds out tourists with inappropriate behavior. The experience isn't a campy one: guests spend their time politely on the terrace of their rooms, reading books in the reception area, working at tables, or meeting new people in the evenings in the restaurant. Incidentally, every dish we tried on the menu was deliciously prepared, heartily presented, and served in a Balinese style. Some people chat over board games, but no one allows themselves to make noise or disturb others after sunset. And finally, about the rooms. Rest assured, your stay will be relaxing, because with spacious and clean rooms, high-quality toiletries for hair and body, and functional minimalism, you'll forget about stress, as everything you need for your stay is there. Suggestions for the hotel: It would be nice to have something like a foot shower at the entrance to the hotel, so you can wash off sand after the beach and not inadvertently drag it into the grounds, or at least have a sand-cleaning device right in front of the room entrance, something like a personal broom for guests. Also, I missed a place to dry clothes and towels. Unfortunately, we got so wet before check-in that we turned the entire free space into a drying room. Yes, the staff warned us about laundry service, but you can't just drop off every item when you really need it in an hour or three. Otherwise, we highly recommend it. Our stay left us with the warmest memories. We'd be happy to return if we have the chance."

Villa Alba - Ahangama ★★★★

📍 Kosgaha Deniya, Pelassa Road, Kathaluwa Thiththagalla Rd, Ahangama

"We booked the entire villa for our family of 6 (including adult children). It proved a perfect choice because we all had plenty of independent space, as well as communal living and dining areas (and of course the pool). The architecture and style of the villa is superb, and we loved the outlook across the rice fields. Service was faultless and the food excellent. We stayed for 7 nights and didn't tire of the menu. The only downside was that getting transport to/from the beach or Galle proved a little tricky (compounded by the fact there was 6 of us). We tried taxis, tuk tuks and PickMe - with mixed success."

Palm Garden Ayurveda Resort Ahangama

Palm Garden Ayurveda Resort Ahangama ★★★★

📍 Sri Wijaya Mawatha Maliyagoda, Ahangama

"We arrived at Palm Garden in mid-May, which is the end of the high season in southwestern Sri Lanka, so the hotel was relatively quiet and uncrowded. The rooms are clean and spacious, with high ceilings and a pleasant view of the pool. The grounds are green, well-maintained, and very atmospheric. The staff is friendly and always ready to help. The breakfasts are also quite good by local standards. The sea is a bit far—about a 15-20-minute walk or about a 5-minute tuk-tuk ride—but otherwise, everything was great."

The Sandhya Hotels in Ahangama

The Sandhya

"Minimalist design, open and light central atrium. There's a laid back vibe from arrival, with welcoming retro lounge furniture, unfortunately the choice to not provide air conditioning to this area makes it unbearably hot for almost the entire day/night, only when storms rolled in did people sit enjoying the space. We opted for the larger room with pool access, I don't think it's necessary the standard pool access rooms looked more than adequate. The room is very large with a decent size and very comfortable bed. The bathroom has separate bath and shower with twin sinks, in the room is a good sized safe that accomdates a large SLR camera easily, there are bath robes and single use slippers. There are also multi country plug sockets. There is no fridge and no kettle, but you can make use of the kitchenette. The house keeping was good but turn down service was hit or miss. For the most part noise from the road isn't disturbing when around by the pool, the sound of waves crashing is the constant soundtrack. Although the pool area is limited to guests only, we did notice on some days more people than rooms. The breakfast is very nice, although the outdoor tables are too small for the plates and dishes. There is a small kitchen area to help yourself for tea /coffee with wine/lion beer (at a cost). This seems like a nice idea but execution feels jumbled. If you need to find a staff member as the hotel often feels deserted, open the fridge, one will appear. The view from the property across the beach is wonderful, although it's clear there is a battle happening, illegal structures built on the beach were destroyed by police, much of the debris remained on the beach for days, the hotel has made efforts to tidy up but more structures have arrived, sadly this is symptomatic of a wider problem of lack of pride in a beautiful country with no thought to dumping garbage anywhere and everywhere Overall the hotel is very nice, kept to a high standard but after spending 4weeks touring SL, this hotel feels very expensive for the amenities and at times the service didn't have the warmth we experienced elsewhere, my 4 rating is generous as I feel 3 is too harsh."

Harding Boutique Hotel

"This hotel lived up to and beyond our expectations. The staff, from the outset were professional, caring and considerate. For sure a re-treat from the rat race demanding work duties. The rooms were modern and aesthetically appealing…clean and thoughtfully appointed. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. The hotel is central to all you need to visit, other attractions and night life. The chef, his menus and execution was some of the freshest and tasteful food. The team within were organised, great communication and most helpful. Thank you team Harding boutique Hotel x"

Hotel Kabalana ★★★★★
"This is the dirtiest hotel I've ever stayed in. The entire room is covered in rat droppings. There's no hot water. At night, mice or rats would crawl around the room and gnaw on the cookies until I got up and put them in the fridge. We stayed for one night to decide where to stay on the coast. Do not stay at this hotel under any circumstances; it's simply unsafe from a health standpoint."

Villa Alba - Ahangama ★★★★
"We stayed here for the second time in January. We received a very warm welcome. The hotel only has five rooms. The rooms are very spacious and have a lovely terrace. From the terrace, you can watch peacocks, water buffalo, and monkeys – simply wonderful. The bathroom is also beautiful and roomy. Breakfast is fantastic – every day there is fruit, banana bread, bread, buffalo yogurt, and a dish you can choose from the menu. The food at the hotel is excellent; it's well worth eating there in the evening. We think the location is great. The whole team is very attentive, but we would especially like to thank Khalana."

Kahaii Surf hotel ★★★
"This place became my gateway to the world of surfing and the perfect starting point for my Sri Lankan journey. It’s an excellent hotel that strikes a great balance: you get the professional European mindset of the Hotelier combined with the genuine care of the local staff. The rooms are clean, stylish, and well-maintained, featuring blackout curtains, mini-fridge and AC. I also appreciated the common kitchen, which is fully equipped with everything you need (gas stove, kettle, coffee machine, fridge, cutlery and tableware), as well as the fitness area on the covered terrace and the pool. A huge plus is the constant access to quality bottled drinking water. This is very important—despite the subtropical climate, I had zero digestive issues, and my acclimatization went perfectly! One small detail for light sleepers: there is a small ventilation window (*) above the entrance door. Since this increases sound sensitivity (you might hear passing tuk-tuks or scooters, along with the local peacocks), it’s something to keep in mind. However, I solved this easily with a pair of good earplugs (thoughtfully provided in the room) and slept like a log! A little fun fact in the end: the word "Kahaii" in the hotel's name translates from Belarusian as "Love" - love Surfing, love the Ocean, love Life! And yes, I truly fell in love with surfing here! 🫶❤️🤗 * - the building was originally constructed by a local, which explains this architectural feature. The window itself isn't needed for airflow since every room has AC, and you don’t have to worry about bugs—there are mosquito screens everywhere to keep uninvited guests out."

"This is not a 4 star hotel Very basic, with concrete floors, very small bathroom where you can’t swing a cat round … no hooks to hang towels up and a small pathetic shower head. No shower gel provided but they do provide a small bar of soap. Very clostrophobic bathroom."
