Astroea Beach Hotel

Initially we booked 4 nights here with a plan to extend our stay or move on somewhere else. We were a bit concerned with some of the negative reviews but it definitely looked our sort of place - a small property with stunning beachside location that offered a limited facility all-inclusive. Well, we arrived after the 12 hour flight from London to be told they were overbooked and we’d been “upgraded” to their sister hotel, Preskil Island Resort (see separate review). Our brief view of Astroea Beach left us wanting more and so after assurances from Southern Cross that we would not be overbooked again, we decided to spend the remaining 5 nights of our Mauritius holiday here. Accommodation We booked a 2 bedroom bungalow and were allocated 205 which has a direct sea view and easy access to beach. It looks like rooms have been spruced up with comfy, but firm beds and a newish sofa in the lounge. There is a mini bar fridge, included on the all inclusive package (beer and soft drinks topped up daily). The bathroom had a new loo and washbasin but the tiles seem to be have been part painted in emulsion by a small child or visually impaired person. The grouting is pretty grim too. The electric shower is an instant Triton heater so water pressure is compromised . There is no hot water into the bungalow so I had to boil the kettle in order to shave in the wash basin, but this was no real hassle. There was an air conditioner in each bedroom which was effective, albeit noisy. Despite some poor decoration in the bathroom, everything was kept spotlessly clean. Food and Beverage We loved the small, part-open restaurant directly above the beach. Breakfast had a selection of fruit, cereal, pastries, bread etc with a toaster for the bread. There was a bean coffee machine if you wanted something different to the filter coffee and tea was served in a teapot, essential for us Brits. There was a number of hot items for order including great omelettes, eggs, sausage (chicken), bacon and crepes. Lunch was a good choice menu of salads, pasta, burger, fish and paninis. The choice of all-inclusive items was more limited and did not seem to have a logic as to why they were included or not, but we loved the fish “burger” which was actually a large fillet of sea bream. Dinner was 3 courses with a choice of 2 items for each course, which you selected at breakfast time. This was absolutely fine by us and avoided food waste. All food was freshly prepared (with love) and cooked to order from the tiny kitchen, so this could take time, which was absolutely no problem when you had the amazing view and you are on holiday. The all inclusive drinks were good for the price point. The wine was Cape Bay South African which was perfectly OK. Phoenix lager was on draft and there was even large glasses (0.6l). Double measures of spirits were no problem on request and there was a selection of cocktails. You signed for drinks and your meals at the end of each session. Beach and grounds Stu

The most cost-effective hotel I have been to Hilton during the Spring Festival. Shangri-La and other hotels. Although it is much more luxurious than this, this hotel is located in the Blue Bay beach and has a private island like Shangri-La. It is the best place for the entire Mauritius coral to see the smallest fish. It can be said that building a mid-range hotel here is simply a waste.

The room has not to be said to be very big, there is no TV in the room, no slippers, no toothpaste, toothbrushes, these need to be prepared by the guests themselves, and it is his hotel. It is difficult to find without a logo. It is really, there is a big KFC below. It is just above KFC. The advantage, That is, you can cook breakfast and Chinese food. In the evening, you can buy vegetables and cook his downstairs. Opposite is a vegetable market. Vegetables and meats are sold. The sea is the beach. It is very beautiful to sightseeing, but it is not very easy to find. Absolutely Chinese people want to have a car. It is best to have a car, no car is inconvenient

Both double rooms had a lake view, but the standard was very different. The breakfast was good with French bread that appeared to be very fresh. It was nice to be able to sit outside and study the behavior of the small birds. They kept control of the tables before and during breakfast. In the first room the fan didn’t work. It was to slow. Therefore it became unacceptably hot especially, when I was trying to sleep. The shower had been turned off and the bathroom floor became very slippery when it had become wet. We found the town of Mahebourg nice, so we extended our stay by two days. The hotel offered us a new room with a much better standard when we stayed two more days. I appreciated that we now had a fridge and a shower that worked. It was nice with a pool but difficult to get up, when it had rained. After the rain the edge of the pool had become very slippery. I didn't want to slip and hurt myself. I swam in the sea the other days. The beach was very shallow. But watch out! There are a lot of sharp corals. I will give 4 points. (Three points for the first part of the stay and five for the last.)

Bad Chevk-in routine It is a very modern hotel too bad the staff and the hotel’s policies are not modern. The hotel is isolated in an area away from facilities. You need transportation to get to a small mall or to the beach. The hotel does run a limited shuttle to the mall and beach. We arrived at the hotel from the Mauritius cruise port at 11:30am. At the front desk they said the rooms will not be assigned until 3pm and we should just sit down until 3 pm. Never asked our names. I said we are Holiday Inn members - didn’t matter - rooms will be assigned at 3pm. However a couple we knew arrived at 12:30pm and were given a room immediately. They did not know why. We also watched numerous people check out while we waited. The 3 pm assignment had nothing to do with the rooms being ready. Rooms are not assigned until 3 pm. By 3 pm there were over 40 people waiting for rooms. Some people decided to go to the mall. Can you imagine 40 people waiting until 3 pm for a bell to ring signaling the rooms are now available. I envisioned a mad rush to get in line for a room. Disgusted I asked for a manager. When I explained to Cecilia that we were waiting since 1130 for a room AND we are HIG members. Cecilia said they have a routine. I asked “isn’t it better to assign rooms as they become available rather than wait until 3 pm to assign all the rooms” She reiterated that they have a routine. So at 3 pm now people are alll lined up to obtain their room assignments. It will take well over an hour to assign the rooms. At 5:30 pm people were still on line to check in. The hotel’s routine is not good for customer satisfaction.

Service: The attitude of the service staff is very good, the explanation is especially good for people's patience 😊 Environment: Breakfast in the morning can see the beautiful scenery outside, the mountains and the small lake and sea are rare, the breakfast is very delicious 😋

We went there for a couple of days and were all extremely disappointed. The establishment is really dirty and not really attractive.. the hosts seemed loss when we first arrived.. The reception was really hard to find… The room was okay but there were a little bit of dust everywhere. The mattress on my bed moved a lot during the night and i had to put it in place every 30 minutes! The bathroom sink was found in the shower. No soap bar or shower gel were given.. we needed to buy it ourselves. No iron were given to us we needed to buy our own. The breakfast was an okay bun with jam, butter and an egg. Around 10pm the power cut and nobody came to give us torches or candles. We could hear the hosts talking to try getting the electricity back though. The only positive point is that the host(man) is quite nice and that the water gets hot after some time. In my opinion, for the price we could at least get a bar of soap, an iron and some cheese included in the breakfast. NOTE: There is no dining room. Breakfast is served in the hosts’ one and you need to wait for other clients to finish for you to get a seat.

We were only here for 1 night and a half day. The owner family are very friendly and exceptionally helpful people, not only verbally but also with practical help. The rooms are not what we would expect in Europe, the bed is good and taking a shower is perfect. The room we stayed in was very spacious. The house is located near the center of the city, 10 minutes to the Waterfront, the Cavendish Bridge and the historical museum. The airport is close by. People are either picked up at the airport (additional cost), or easily reached by rental car. Please note, some GPS devices do not find the street, the early name was Rue de l'Hopital. Definitely recommended. French, English and some oriental languages Wifi works well, breakfast and parking within the fence, included
