Shuilu Temple, Lantian County, Xian The temple was built during the Sui and Tang dynasties and was originally the Shuilu Hall of Wuzhen Temple. It was later restored by the Qin Fan King of the Ming Dynasty over a period of more than five years. Today, it houses over 3,000 clay sculptures. 🌟 Highlights The colored clay wall sculptures in the Daxiong Hall are the essence of the Shuilu Temple. 1️⃣ In the center are Sakyamuni, the Medicine Buddha, and Amitabha Buddha, with Kasyapa and Ananda standing on either side of Sakyamuni. The backlight features four Buddhas, eight Bodhisattvas, four Vajras, eight Dharma Protectors, etc. 2️⃣ The side walls are decorated with murals that depict the life story of Sakyamuni and various: Landscapes and architecture: bridges, gardens, waterfalls, pavilions, towers, and pagodas Buddhas and Bodhisattvas: various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, 24 heavenly kings, 500 Arhats crossing the sea, 1,000 people listening to the scriptures, and a statue of Sakyamuni entering Nirvana As well as birds, beasts, and Qilin, etc. It's quite interesting to slowly search and observe. 3️⃣ The 24 divine generals at the bottom: each has a different expression and posture, holding various weapons, and is majestic and domineering. Their facial features and shapes are exaggerated, and their aura is fully open. The rear hall is currently under maintenance, but you can still see 80% of the wall sculptures. With the popularity of cultural and ancient buildings, you can take photos in the hall, just don't use flash. 💡 Shuilu Temple tips 🚌 Transportation 1. Take bus 904 from downtown Xian to the foot of the mountain, then walk or take a taxi for 3 km. 2. Or take bus 2 to Shuilu Temple, but there are very few buses, only 2-3 in the morning and afternoon. 3. From the Textile City Station, you can take the red bus to Lantian County across the street from the station, and then take a taxi for about CNY 20. 🕐 Schedule Admission is free and you can take photos. If you like it, you can take your time and stroll around for a long time. There are still quite a few people on a daily basis. If you have flexible time, you can avoid the peak hours. There are relatively fewer people at lunchtime. 🍜 Dining If you are in Lantian, you can try the local specialty, lamb blood Hele. There are small shops near the bus station. There are also stalls selling snacks and drinks at the entrance of the temple. 📷 Surroundings There is not much to see in the small county town. To the north is the Cai Wenji Memorial Hall, which is worth a visit if you are interested in the Three Kingdoms. You can also visit Wuzhen Temple across from Shuilu Temple.
