The hostel is on the top of a mountain. After entering the old town, you need to climb 199 steps up the mountain. It is recommended to drive by yourself. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to the city center and the train station. The garden is very beautiful. There is a restaurant that provides breakfast and other meals. The front desk is not open 24 hours. Check-in starts at 15:00 on time. Check-out time is 10:00 in the morning. Just throw the key card into the box. The cutlery and utensils in the self-service kitchen are very clean.

It's quite clean. The bathroom is clean too. But it's troublesome to wash your hair because the hair dryer is at the front desk. If you use it in the room, it will disturb others. If you use it outside the room, it's not very convenient for people of the opposite sex to stay (the two rooms are very close to each other). (It would be better if the hair dryer was installed in the bathroom)
But it's close to the train station, suitable for backpackers on the road, who don't need to wash their hair if they stay for one night

The price is reasonable. It's fine when the weather is good but not bad. The location is on the mountain and there is no driving. Although it is very inconvenient to go up and down the mountain to buy things, the environment is beautiful and the hotel staff is very nice.

They are all girls who love to be clean. It’s good, the world cannot exist without girls. It’s just that it’s hard to find it when it’s dark. The train was delayed for the first time and I couldn’t find the way late at night. Google Navigation ****** me and went around to the other side. There was also a little fox with green eyes. It was the only one at night. Just the green eyes are dazzling, and the hair on the hair is standing on end. The next day I discovered that the road next to it was a cemetery. It's quite scary. It's easy to find at dawn.

A great place to stay ! Entrance is an Archway to the left of the Main gate of Whitby Abbey- drive /walk to the end of driveway to find entrance and free parking.Close to all attractions and gardens are beautifully maintained! Spacious bedroom with high headroom in lower bunkbeds. YHA cafe has spectacular outside views of Whitby.
Response from Property: Hi Sue, thank you so much for your kind words. Our garden is actually maintained by a group of volunteers which we are very proud of. They grow seasonal produce and are all experts in the different areas of herbs, fruits and flowers.

Visiting the cafe today, service very slow, person running cash register was also making the coffee making machines. Then after waiting 20 mins for a couple of toasties I had to enquire why they hadn’t yet come out. The bread looked like it had been shown to a toaster and that was it. A disappointing experience
Response from Property: HI Paul, I am so sorry you did not receive our usual standard of service or quality of food on your visit on Friday. It has been an exceptionally busy time for us due to the sunny weather and whilst this shouldn't have affected your experience it obviously did. Please do accept my apologies and come back and try us again.

Stayed here recently so my wife could attend a dance competition at the Whitby Pavillion. Family of 4, 3 adults and 1 child. On arrival there was no parking directly outside so we were advised to park in the disabled bays just inside the gatehouse (they were empty, moved the car to an empty space outside the hostel the following morning after some guests had presumably checked out), The outer entrance archway is quite tight especially when the abbey is open and they've got a barrier up just outside the gatehouse. Check in was easy and friendly, surprised to get a free entry ticket for the abbey which we used on our last day before heading home. Given room 2 which was big, clean and overlooked the abbey. The building is old and a little dated in places but we actually like it that way. Had a meal in the cafe/restaurant, reasonably priced and good quality. Had breakfast on both mornings as well and this was also good value with good quality food and an excellent selection. We've stayed in Youth Hostels before so we'd also brought a pre-prepared meal which we cooked in the self catering kitchen which was busy but everyone took their turn and it was left clean and tidy by all who used it. Youth hostels may not be everyone's cup of tea but they're usually well located, reasonably priced and give you the flexibility to travel in larger groups and cater for yourself while staying. All the staff we encountered during our stay were friendly and helpful. I've looked at this hostel on numerous previous occasions but it has usually been fully booked so I am pleased we were able to stay this time and would probably stay again in the future.
Response from Property: Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review. I'm glad to see that you enjoyed your time here and hopefully we will see you again soon. Our on site parking is limited to around 15 spaces which does fill up quite quickly. Luckily we are allowed to use Whitby Abbey's spaces once it closes for the day and there is the pay & display car park which is a 5-10 minute walk. The outer archway can be a bit snug but we do regularly get minibuses through it. I don't think you can get anything bigger through! A few of our rooms overlook the Abbey and others the valley and river. Most have en-suite WCs and showers so we do get plenty of family bookings when we aren't full with school residentials. Thank you again!

Stopped for one night on our daddy and daughter half term trip. I parked at half three and managed to get a space in the small car park but free parking in winter is available nearby. We stopped in room 9 which has some very old panel features in the wall and it's great to see the history of the building. Given its age it does have some structural issues but for me that adds to its charm. The slanted stairs and uneven floors which may be awkward if you've imbibed a few ales from the brewery next door but on the whole just show it's a grand old house. Used the self catering so while I cannot comment on the food I did notice the cafe itself is open till late which is a bonus given the distance from town. Added bonus of free pass into the abbey next door.

Response from Property: Thanks for the review and I think you've mentioned some of the great things about staying with us. You'll have to forgive the old girls' crooked staircases, low ceilings and sloping floors but she is of an age as you say! We hope to see you again in the future

Geeta for overnight stay. The hostel gave us complimentary entry to the whitby abbey which made this a great value deal. We did not know that, so we were quite happy with it. The room was okay, with decent heating. It faced the parking lot, so not the best view. The cafe and common areas are amazing.

Warnings: - Walking up the 199 steps from the middle of Whitby to the hostel, with a week's worth of clothes in a rucksack, isn't easy! (but absolutely doable!) - climbing up stairs to a top floor dorm, with rucksack, having just walked up the 199 steps in order to check in, was a little hard work. Having said those warnings, it was aboslutely worth it. We had: - Comfy beds - Comfy enough space in dorms for occupants & belongings - Clean bathrooms - the option of buying meals from the cafe/restaraunt if we wanted, with a reasonable menu. - the self catering kitchen was decent enough. We've stayed at places wiith slightly better equipped self cater kitchens, however this one was absolutely fine. Views out of the windows depends on what side of the building you end up on - dorm M8 has windows both sides; one side you can see out over Whitby, the other over the hostel car park into the back of the Abbey museum but you can just about see the edge of the Abbey ruins. We did get offered, and took up, the offer of vouchers for a free visit to the Abbey (literally next door) which we otherwise wouldn't have paid to get in to with not being English Heritage members.
Response from Property: Thanks for posting such an informative review. Great to hear you had a good stay despite the weather and we hope you'll come back and see us again soon
