As you may ask me how my stay went, as you know we didn't go to Madeira, I made a mistake with the dates, I wanted March and not February and your answer was NO. I won't book anything with Trip.com anymore.
Nothing against Hotel Baleira. Many thanks to Patricia who did what she could.
Thanks
The hotel is well located, right opposite a forum where you can do your shopping as well as eat.
The staff are very friendly, super pleasant, the breakfast is quite expensive, €15 per person but very good, the landscape is just extraordinary
I recommend this hotel really nothing to say
A stay at Residencial Família places you in the heart of Machico, a 1-minute drive from Machico Beach and 6 minutes from Whale Museum. This golf pension is 5.5 mi (8.9 km) from Sao Lourenco Point and 12.3 mi (19.7 km) from Madeira Botanical Garden.
Take in the views from a terrace and make use of amenities such as complimentary wireless internet access.
You can enjoy a meal at the restaurant serving the guests of Residencial Família, or stop in at the snack bar/deli. Wrap up your day with a drink at the bar/lounge. A complimentary continental breakfast is served daily from 8 AM to 10 AM.
Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, a 24-hour front desk, and laundry facilities. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours), and free self parking is available onsite.
Make yourself at home in one of the 10 guestrooms. Rooms have private balconies. Complimentary wireless internet access keeps you connected, and cable programming is available for your entertainment. Private bathrooms with showers feature rainfall showerheads and designer toiletries.
The hotel is old, but very nice. The windows offer a stunning view of the bay. The cleanliness of the room is at a high level. The hotel territory with well-maintained pedestrian paths on the coast. Polite staff.
Convenient location of the hotel relative to the airport, you can even walk quietly in 30-40 minutes.
Cons: Disappointed by the breakfast, meager and tasteless. And they could at least put water in the room. Little things, but after a flight this is important, especially if you arrive late at night.
Hotel Solar BOM Jesus was a delightful stay. I appreciated the quiet and serene atmosphere. The room was spotless and comfortable, perfect for a restful night's sleep. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, going above and beyond to ensure a pleasant stay. The hotel's location, nestled amidst stunning scenery, offered breathtaking views and easy access to local attractions. I highly recommend this gem to anyone seeking a peaceful retreat.
We stayed in the hotel with group of friends. The experience was really nice — rooms are clean and design are interesting and cozy. You will have breakfast in the other hotel next door and it’s delicious. Also you can use territory of other hotel — there are really nice lounge zone, pool and sea-view. We enjoyed.
Only one thing was disturbing — if you want to sleep with open windows it can be really noisy. Because of the buses (going from early morning) and loud people (who were singing and screaming drunk). But if you close the window everything is perfect.
Thanks
The rooms were nice and spacious with nice balconies on a great location. The rooms could use a renovation and be better cleaned especially in more hidden places like under the bed. The hairdryer overheated easily. The breakfast is good and varied and the staff is the best part of the hotel, super friendly!
Funchal is wonderful! We're so grateful to our hotel; its central location meant everything was within easy reach: restaurants, interesting sights, and the waterfront. The building itself is historic, and the rooms have a lot of character – each one even boasts a unique door. The breakfasts were delicious, and there's a pool as well. The hotel also offers many great spots for beautiful photos! We were extremely pleased!

VVerified MemberThis was a very decent and affordable hotel — nothing fancy or luxurious, but it covers the basics quite well. It’s clean, efficient, and does the job for travelers looking for a simple place to stay. One of the best surprises was that if you’re lucky enough to get a room with ocean views, it really adds a lot of value to the overall experience.
That said, there were some clear drawbacks. The room itself felt extremely tight, especially for two people with a couple of suitcases. There was very limited space to move around, which made things feel a bit cramped and uncomfortable. The bathroom was also quite small, and while functional, it lacked the comfort you’d hope for in a multi-day stay.
One highlight was the balcony. Though the interior space was tight, the room had a good-sized balcony where we enjoyed golden hour and sunset views — that part was genuinely lovely and added a sense of openness and relaxation we didn’t get inside the room.
The most significant downside for me was the parking situation. The hotel only has three official parking spots, which are always full. Given the area is busy and surrounded by in-demand places like grocery stores, cafés, restaurants, and a laundromat, street parking is very limited and expensive. I had to park at a nearby garage, which cost 10 euros overnight.
As for the rooftop, the amenities there weren’t particularly impressive — nothing that would stand out compared to more upscale hotels. But once again, the ocean and sunset views from the rooftop are stunning and give you a brief illusion of being at a five-star resort.
All in all, this hotel offers good value for money, especially if you’re not planning to spend too much time in the room. It’s a solid base for exploring the area, as long as you’re okay with a few compromises in comfort and convenience.
FFaroSandraNice hotel that lived up to expectations.
Excellent location in Calheta, right on a golden sand beach, with direct access from the hotel. It is ideal to have a car as it is 30 minutes from Funchal.
It's worth paying extra to have a room with a sea view
The quality and quantity of the food complies with the all-inclusive package, as do the drinks.
Daily and varied entertainment.
Good spa with heated pool, Turkish bath, sauna and cold showers.
Very pleasant outdoor pool area, with plenty of sun loungers and well designed.
Free ping pong, paid billiards (€3/hour).
Very good price/quality ratio.
GGuest UserWe really enjoyed our stay at Baia Azul. This hotel has everything! Gorgeous views from the lounge area, a lovely bar with entertainment at night, excellent service, lovely comfortable rooms, and a very nice pool area. We cannot fault it! The breakfast was also lovely. Would definitely stay here again!
GGuest UserA bit far from the center. But good cleaning. Very varied breakfast. Pool and jacuzzi that comes in handy when you return from excursions.
The views from the terraces are spectacular, especially at night.
buses very close
FFabianThe dining room -I was there for the breakfast- is an old one, not so inviting. The breakfast-selection is not so good, as a vegan or vegetarian you can't choose much (only beans & bread), the coffee is okay but not tasty, the juices are not fresh & sugary.
There is no big pot for cooking, for two persons it would be good to have one.
The bed is good, the fan does its job, the bathroom is big enough, the balcony practical.
The location is near to the busline, 30min to walk to the center & there is the Lido promenade (with some places to swim) to the next small city with a small light tunnel for pedestrians, there you can hear/see the surf :)
The opening times for the pool are too late in the morning and too short (8.00-20.00).
The female staff at the reception with the glasses (saturday evening), didn't manage my wake-up-call for the next morning (the staff at this day showed me that he had no notice for a call), thats not a good one, because sometimes you have to depend on it.
GGuest UserVery disappointing parking situation, 10e a day parking or driving up and down the road trying to find public spot.. NO WIFI!!!! What do you mean there’s 0 free WiFi access in any areas of the hotel
Wouldn’t be as big of an issue but there’s also very little mobile network connection, therefore use of Data was ever limited..
Breakfast - is okay, you could tell a lot of items are stored and reused days later (pastries, fresh fruits)
Pool is okay but sunbeds are uncomfortable and you can’t get a towel in morning (10am…)
Hotel management could easily make this in a 5* property with just basic additional amenities and being less greedy with add ons..
Overall for a supposedly 4 star hotel it’s more like 3.
However
Staff are quite nice and helpful
Rooms are crazy spacious (probably double what average same price hotel will get you in Portugal)
Location is good, a little further from city center (about 75min walk) but in front of a nice empty black sand beach

NNia TravelsA beautiful beachfront hotel that is perfect for romantic getaways and a cheaper alternative, yet still luxury, to standard 5 star hotels. Location wise the hotel isn’t great as it’s very remote from the strip/city centre and taxi prices are not particularly cheap in Madeira. The rooms are spacious and stunning, well worth it with a great selection for the breakfast buffet and plenty of restaurants/options for dinner. A lovely love band/musician plays every night which is also great. Overall a wonderful stay with much friendly staff, however if you are looking to do much sightseeing in Madeira, this hotel is not the best option unless a significant amount is left for travel.
