The quality of the hotel is very high. It's conveniently located near the train station and a 15 minute walk to the old town. The spa is really nice, clean, and spacious. The family spa is a nice touch. Rooms are very large, comfortable beds, with a tub. The only drawback is breakfast. The restaurant is too small to accommodate guests. It's odd that it's common in Japan to have large hotels, with many guests, include breakfast, and then build a tiny restaurant. Makes no sense. Options are limited and food is the same every day. I wouldn't recommend it, but there's so few options nearby or in the town in general, that you basically have to eat there. Just go before 8 AM. Otherwise, the hotel is really nice.
Highly recommend! The entire service was excellent. As soon as we got off the bus, there's an iCafe right under the JR station where you can drop off your luggage. They then send it directly to the hotel for you. So by the time you're done exploring and ready to check in, your bags are already in your room. Plus, there's a shuttle bus every hour from 6:30 AM to 9:15 PM that picks you up and drops you off at the JR station, making the whole experience very thoughtful. The hot springs are also a highlight – there are many outdoor baths, all super relaxing. Breakfast is very substantial too; you absolutely have to try the fish and natto. The front desk staff were incredibly accommodating as well. They proactively added an extra bed for us. We're two adults and one child, and our room originally only had two standard beds, but they added another one next to them even before we checked in.
Pros:
- Shuttle bus waiting right in front of the train station
- Shuttle bus drop-off every hour in the morning till noon
- the room we booked is really spacious with a western-style room and a Japanese-style room and a private bathroom
- the view at our room balcony is a big bonus
- There are 3 onsens in the hotel which all are good
- Nice buffet breakfast with variety of Japanese food
Cons:
- only one drawback during my stay is other groups of guests whom spoke loudly while using the onsens
Let's start with the conclusion: this hotel is definitely in my top three of all the hotels I've stayed at in Japan. If I could give it a 6 out of 5, I would!
From the moment I first walked in to check in, every staff member greeted me warmly. During check-in, they meticulously explained the room facilities and hotel policies. What's more, everyone's English was excellent. After I mentioned that I was actually practicing my Japanese, the staff immediately switched to a slower pace of Japanese, which I really appreciated.
The room facilities are comprehensive. You can't say they're bad just because they're not brand new, as they fulfill all necessary living functions perfectly. So, that's another 5 out of 5.
The location is incredibly convenient. It's less than a 5-minute walk from the Nohi Bus Center. Turn left from the hotel, and you're at the shopping street in just one minute. It's also very close to the old town. So, the location also gets a 5 out of 5.
During my three nights in Takayama, the hotel felt like a little haven I could quickly recall after a tiring day of sightseeing. Therefore, if I ever return to Takayama, I will definitely stay at this hotel again.
On a side note, the service quality of Nohi Bus is also better than other bus companies I've taken in other parts of Japan. I don't have anywhere else to comment, so I'm mentioning it here. If any of the hotel staff know someone at Nohi Bus, maybe they could pass along the message, haha.
If I had to point out an area for improvement, it would be the cleaning policy. I stayed for three nights and felt I didn't need daily cleaning, so I opted out. On the first day, I received fresh towels, and frankly, I felt I had enough. However, every day I received a new bag of towels and pajamas. I'm grateful, but it was a bit excessive. Perhaps they could add an option to not provide towels at all.
Takayama is a gentle and quiet town, and Gift and Spa perfectly embodies the emotional comfort of this city. Thank you.
We are here for their onsen (can opt for private or public) and because of its strategic location from the train station and bus station. There are alot of food options within short walking distance, around 10-15 min walk to reach miyagawa river and enjoy their morning market. The hotel provides odens and new year noodle because we spent new year during our stays. They put extra care for kids amenities with a cute slippers and handkerchief. We enjoy our stay in Takayam
A very satisfying accommodation experience. The staff are of high quality and the service is in place. Although the hotel has a certain history, it is well maintained in all aspects and the environment is clean and hygienic. The breakfast is rich in variety and delicious, and the room design is reasonable. I will recommend it to friends and stay here again next time.
The facilities have a more European-American style, simple, clean, and brightly colored. There's an outdoor onsen, which, though not huge, is perfectly fine when it's not too crowded. The lounge is also nice, a great spot to rest your feet when it's really cold.
Transportation: Extremely convenient. It's only a ten-minute walk to the station, even with luggage, which is incredibly important. You can reach Takayama Jinya and Hie Shrine within 25 minutes.
Surrounding Amenities: There's a large 7-Eleven convenience store just a ten-minute walk away. And right downstairs is the best Hida beef restaurant in Takayama – it was so easy to grab a ticket early.
Cleanliness: Decent, didn't look dirty.
Service: I have to give a special shout-out to the front desk staff – they spoke the best English of any hotel we encountered on our Nagoya trip. Communication was so smooth and pleasant. My wife forgot her onsen password, and the front desk quickly resolved it. I can't imagine how cold it would have been if the front desk didn't speak English and she had to go down in her onsen attire on such a chilly day.
The hotel is sited with a beautiful view of the river and mountains. The fact it was next to the rail tracks did not make it too noisy. The rooms were well maintained and clean. Service was good and friendly. Rooms were also spacious and comfortable.
The hotel is very nice, located in the mountains, quiet and peaceful. The riverside park nearby is very large and well maintained. The room is large in Japan, the price is reasonable, and you can soak in the hot spring at night, which is very comfortable. However, you can only drive here by yourself, it is very inconvenient to get here without a car.

AAnonymous UserMy first onsen experience was truly amazing! Kaiseki dinner was exceptional and unique - I’ve tried a lot of new dishes that I’ve never heard of. Staff was nice and friendly, transfer was waiting for us right at the exit of train station. Must visit site to feel the real onsen experience with rich history and traditions!
EEivangThe hotel has a great ambiance, and the rooms come with private onsen, offering excellent value for money. The lady at the restaurant spoke Chinese, which made dining very enjoyable. The only downside was that the breakfast portion was a bit small, which seems to be a common issue with non-buffet hotels in Japan.
GGuest UserThe hotel is settled in the middle of Gero Hot Spring town, short walk from the train station and can also be reached via bus from Kamikochi area.
The hotel itself is very clean and well maintained. You can feel the spirit of older times in this hotel with a lot of beautifully selected decoration pieces.
The manager showed us around and even offered us a new room since I accidentally booked one without shower (we declined that offer since we only wanted to stay for one night). That’s why we used the Onsen area for showering which is beautiful and includes all amenities. View above Gero and including an outside Onsen area to watch the sunrise.
The staff was very friendly, the manager even drove us to the bus station since we forgot our jackets in the bus. The bar is well-equipped and a great place for a drink or two.
One of the best parts was the breakfast. Never had such a good Japanese breakfast before- delicious, served in a private room, beautifully arranged. Next time we want to try their dinner :-)
We felt like family and I can recommend anyone going to Gero to stay at this great hotel! Thanks again for your hospitality!
NNicholasTanNice big room for family of 4. Good location, walkable to the morning market and other food outlets especially the famous Hida Beef restaurant. Drawback is the small trash bin. Room comes with a small kitchen with crockery and utensils. Parking near to the hotel is dependent on availability at ¥1,000/night. Other parking spaces are available too at similar rates.
GGuest UserIn the Takasu Ski district, this is about the most impressive hotel option. Since there is very little dining options in the town of 1 street, we are thankful for the good quality restaurant for breakfast and dinner.
The rooms decor is dated but in very good condition, for a moment I felt like I was in an Austrian ski lodge.
The onsen was also dated but in good functioning condition.
There is on site parking which may not be enough during peak season. Then again, Takasu ski-jo looks like a day trip option.
