Allied War Cemetery, Don Rak

Don Rak War Cemetery or “United Nations War Cemetery” is another name that Kanchanaburi people call “British Cemetery”. This is a large cemetery which contains the bodies of 6,982 prisoners of war who died during the construction of the Death Railway. 300 prisoners of war died of cholera and were buried at Camp Nike, while the rest were buried in other camps. There is also the Chong Kai Cemetery. The Thai government and the Allies agreed to build these two cemeteries. The atmosphere inside the cemetery is very quiet and shady. It is beautifully and orderly decorated. Above every grave is a brass plate inscribed with the name, age, and country of the deceased. The last line is a sad tribute. Every year, there is a day to remember the deceased.
