The Ancient Cave Settlement in Corfu: Gardiki Cave

The Grava of Gardiki, also known as Gardiki Cave, is a significant prehistoric site located on the island of Corfu. This natural rock shelter is found on the southern slopes of Mount Agios Mattheos, providing a quiet setting amidst olive groves. Its elevated position offers views of the surrounding area and the southern part of the island. Archaeological studies at Grava of Gardiki have shown that it was used by humans thousands of years ago. Findings from the cave, including stone tools and animal bones, date back to the Upper Paleolithic period, roughly 20,000 BC. This makes it one of the oldest known places where humans lived on Corfu. These discoveries tell us about the early people who used this shelter for hunting and gathering. The cave itself is a horizontal formation, about 20 meters wide and 13 meters high.
