Greece's Largest Square in Corfu

The main square of Corfu Old Town is the Spianada (or Esplanade). It is in the city of Corfu, which is the capital of the Greek island of the same name, located in the Ionian Sea. The square sits right next to the massive Old Fortress, marking the eastern edge of the historic Old Town, a protected UNESCO World Heritage site. It is known for being the largest square in Greece. The Spianada is a large, open, and mostly green space that was first created for military reasons. Starting in the 16th century, the Venetians tore down buildings in front of the fortress to give them a clear view and better defense against attackers. Later, the French gave the area its present look, modeling a section after the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. Today, the Spianada is the central gathering place for the city.
