Outstanding
EElinaNikThis is the best hotel in Kurokawa!
1. Stuff is kindly meet you, explain everything and help as well as it possible.
2. Ryokan has 6(!) private bathes with different style. No extra payment,, no reservation. You can available status on your TV. During my staying there was at least one ready for use, no time all of them was using.
3. Water. Just perfect, has a right temperature and composition. Just put yourself into the bath and feel relaxed just since that second.
4. Rooms. Clean and fresh.
5. Open-air bath is cool to, for me a bit too hot. And I was the only one who use it during the dinner time.
6. I had only breakfast, but it is service in private room in dinner hall. Very delicious with various of dishes.
7. The hotel located at two sides of the river. Travelers could enjoy a scenic view from the bridge.
GGuest UserI stayed for one night in mid-May 2025. This new, traditional-style hotel is designed for privacy and a relaxing holiday. Absolute privacy—even at breakfast, you won't encounter anyone else; your own waiter serves you in a private area. It was raining, so I spent the entire time at the hotel. A stylish, huge room with a large private onsen made you want to stay in it. A huge TV with good sound and YouTube, which is not always available in Japanese hotels. Fast WiFi. The kaiseki breakfast was delicious, so delicious that I could have eaten another one. The hotel is located in a village, well away from the town of Kurokawa and the bus terminal. There is no store in the village; there is nothing at all there. The bus terminal is a 30-minute walk from the hotel, only with one backpack. A local bus runs very infrequently between the hotel and the bus terminal. However, in the morning, after breakfast, a free shuttle runs from the hotel to Kurokawa.
NNataliia KhokhlovaI really liked the hot springs with high iron content in this ryokan: I had sore throat for about 3 weeks before the journey, but it recovered just after the first bath. We also liked that family baths are for free if they are vacant (in the evening there wasn't any problem). The staff is attentive, thank you very much. The food was delicious, and there was more than enough for a man. However, we would recommend choosing a Japanese-style breakfast, since frying eggs on a burner is not very convenient. Nevertheless, everything was delicious. As for the drinks for breakfast, there was only coffee from the coffee machine. But there is always green tea in the room (we had problems with the hot pot, so they brought us a thermos).
The only thing we did not like was the heating. However, it is unlikely to do anything with it when it is minus 3 degrees outside at night. Without heating, it was very cold, the floor was cold. But the heating is very noisy, and it is difficult to find a temperature balance. We sweated a lot at night under the blankets, and since the shower is not in the room - it is in the onsen, it was inconvenient. Thanks God, we had spare pajamas with us.
Overall, for this cost of accommodation we can give 5 points.
GGuest UserI stayed here with my parents. We had separate rooms and booked this room for them. It was new, well-equipped, and wonderful. It was a very cold day, but the heating in the room and the semi-open-air bath in the room were warm, so it seemed comfortable for my elderly parents. The staff were also very courteous. Although I didn't book this room, the room type we stayed in was cold, as the heating in the semi-open-air bath and the room didn't work very well. If you're staying during the cold season, I think it's better to choose a D-type room or higher. I would like to visit again during the better seasons.
Jjanesi999This is the largest onsen hotel in Kurokawa; in fact, it's the only large-scale hotel there, all others are inns. The hotel itself is quite spacious, featuring three public baths and two private onsens. If there are many people, you might have to wait in line at the entrance, but it's usually not too long.
It operates on a one-night, two-meal basis. Dinner is a buffet with a good variety of dishes. The taste is decent, nothing spectacular but not bad either. I personally quite enjoyed the breakfast, which was also very plentiful.
Our room had a bed, not a tatami mat. I thought it was pretty good, even though it was small. The bathroom had a separate wet and dry area and was very clean, although the yukata was a bit unflattering. The hotel has a rooftop with what was supposed to be a telescope, but it was out of order when we visited. In the evenings, there's a mini-bar offering some drinks and snacks.
KKKelvinNestled right next to the river, near the village center. Close to the main walking street and attractions. Traditional Ryokan with very good hospitality. Excellent outdoor onsen, with many smaller private onsen in the annex building. Cozy environment, a really good place to relax. The Kaiseki dinner was really good! The curated selections were great in taste, textures and varieties. Best night's sleep in our 7 day tour of Kyushu. Breakfast was good as well, followed by sightseeing around Kurokawa Onsen before checking out. Truly enjoyed our stay here, thanks to their staff. Great people, lovely place.
GGuest UserFrom entering the parking lot everything is taken care of, the rooms are enormous, the size of and amenities of a decently sized appartment along with a large kitchen and finally a private onsen fit for two people right next to the beautiful Kurokawa onsen river, aswell as a small waterfall creating an absolutely dreamy experience. The Ryokan is a about a five minutes walk outside the city center which is absolutely no problem as you have everything you need there.
The gentleman in the reception speaks decent English so even with no japanese knowledge you should be fine
They only seem to have four rooms, we got lucky and booked two days ahead, but most likely won't be that lucky.
Absolutely would go again, great experience
GGuest UserWe are a couple from Australia and I only speak a little Japanese. This was a truly AMAZING experience! The staff were so kind and friendly, giving us assistance was no issue for them. The location is stunning, the private onsen was glorious and the dinners and breakfasts were bigger than we could possibly eat (and we love our food). The price point for this experience was so good - fantastic value for money. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a little adventure in the heart of countryside Japan.
If you get the chance to also visit Minamiaso (they will take you there at no extra charge) for the day, grab some e-bikes and have a ride around- take in the beautiful scenery and wonderful food options.
JJackieXThe hot spring hotel in Kurogawa was not booked, and Trip.com chose a holiday house in the nearby Tibetan hot spring. Arrive before 6 o'clock, otherwise the staff will get off work. The house is very old, the name is ”Mei”, and the other house is a very new one and should be much more comfortable. The kitchen is fully equipped; The indoor hot spring is very hot, you have to try the temperature before entering the water. The towels are small and you have to bring your own bath towels.
GGuest UserThe main plus this location , if you want to be quiet alone with nature ... Early in the morning even the deer breakfasted opposite our terrace 🦌 The common swimming pools were very much liked , the water was hot as you wanted . The room in Japanese style was taken and it corresponds to the mood , I wanted to enter Japanese culture . The hotel owners helped us in this 🙏 All staff very kind . Food is very delicious , for two nights different menus . Thank you the chef of the chef 🙏 It was my birthday and I spent a great time . The Recan fulfilled our expectations 💫
