The rooms are very comfortable, the netting on the bed perfect, the windows protected as well with nets, everything is clean, the beds very comfortable, no ac but also no need in my time period of visiting. The food served is very tasty ans staff speak great english, the location is great if you leave for a safari or in my case climbing Mt Meru. The owner lives at the location and speaks to all guests which is great as any misunderstandings are cleared quicky. The pool is good, and i loved the little walks on the compund, you get to see and hear various birds, monkeys, and buffalos

Really beautiful and tranquil spot. The hotel had lovely personal service and felt like an authentic game lodge with heritage. Surrounded by nature the opportunity to watch monkeys play in the trees whilst eating breakfast is truly magical. Rooms were spacious and comfortable. Would recommend for those staying or travelling through the area.

We chose Mount Meru game lodge as we were arriving early morning into JRO on an international flight and wanted somewhere to relax before our safari the next day. We were not disappointed. From our arrival the staff went out of their way to make us welcome and comfortable and we got to access our room by 11am which was fantastic. The grounds are lovely, with monkeys jumping through the trees above our room and small paths to wander down to see some of the wildlife there. The room itself (for 3 people) was spacious and very comfortable. We had a delicious lunch as well as the half-board buffet dinner (which we wished we had just booked B&B as couldn’t really enjoy the dinner as much as ate so much for lunch so was a bit wasted!) Overall a lovely and very memorable stay. Highly recommend if you want somewhere peaceful and calm to start your trip

Wow! What an amazing home away from home in Tanzania! The staff were incredibly kind, helpful, polite and intuitive. Our every need was considered and the food was delicious. We spent 2 nights and then went on Safari and came back for 2 nights on our way back. Each time, the kids kept saying they felt like they were coming home. The buffet dinner is a must. Breakfast is delicious and fresh. I can highly recommend this lodge!

This is one great hotel with history going back to the 1930s. The hotel and its furnishings hark back to an Africa of the past and the new owner has spent efforts to maintain that quaint atmosphere. He succeeded. The hotel sits on beautifully maintained property with a pool and animals roam a short distance away. Some resident monkeys thrive in the trees above adding to the sanctuary atmosphere intended. A surprisingly well stocked gift shop is at the front of the property. The rooms are a bit dated, adding to their charm, and spotlessly clean. The outdoor dining area offers spectacular views particularly at night when outdoor lighting is added. Five stars particularly for the food, cleanliness, setting, service and really nice bedding.

Our visit to Mount Meru Game Lodge was more than a place to sleep. Packed in 24 hours was a walk through history, walls lined pictures of the lodge and the story of the family who built it, the wildlife it served to protect, a homestead atmosphere with attentive staff at every turn, a kitchen who's chef masterfully prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner, with even a comical "Zonkey" and water buffalo on the grounds for one on the most unique wildlife experiences in all of Africa. To top it off, Owner, Harry, paid us a short visit and shared his amazing story. We will indeed be spending more time at Mount Meru Game Lodge, not just to sleep but to take it all in again. Go, stay, then tell your friends!
Response from Property: This is such an uplifting message to receive - we cannot thank you enough for writing about your recent experience here with us, and we are thrilled that we ticked all the boxes with a 5/5! Our team members will no doubt be really encouraged by this feedback too - they certainly do put heart and soup into everything they do. Thank you for your kind words! With best wishes from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.

I was highly disappointed with my stay at Mt Meru Game Lodge. For the premium price charged, I expected a far better experience. The rooms are quite outdated, lacking the comfort and charm you’d anticipate from a lodge at this price point. What was most surprising—and frankly, unacceptable—was that no complimentary drinking water was provided to guests. Having to purchase basic water at an already expensive lodge felt excessive and out of touch with guest expectations, especially in a hospitality setting like this. On a more positive note, the staff were genuinely kind and welcoming, and the breakfast was good. However, these few positives were not enough to justify the cost of staying here. Overall, it’s simply not worth the price. There are better options available in the area that offer more value, comfort, and guest-friendly amenities. I would not recommend Mt Meru Game Lodge unless there are significant improvements made.
Response from Property: Dear Rishi, We are sorry to read about your disappointment after staying at our Lodge last week. We pride ourselves on being a warm and welcoming 3 star Usa River/ Arusha establishment; and we have made efforts to ensure that our price point is competitive within this category. The room you stayed in (family room number 16A) was renovated in 2024. Our Lodge was first established as a family home in 1959 and our buildings are far from modern, but we have tried to balance our guests’ needs for convenience and comfort with a sense of story. We shall certainly take your comments on board and see where we can improve our offering. Our on-site amenities include an open-air restaurant under giant mango trees, a cosy bar, lounge and dining room, a swimming pool, landscaped gardens full of birds, insects, plant and animal life, wheelchair friendly walkways that traverse the property, a riverside spa for massage treatments and an atmospheric riverdeck for enjoying a meal or quiet time with a book. And then our menu of activities includes nature walks and cultural tours. All our rooms are outfitted with complimentary filtered drinking water throughout the guests’ stay - and if our guests request a refill at any time of the day we are more than happy to oblige. We do charge for bottled water at our restaurant. We are pleased to read that you enjoyed the breakfast and found our staff to be friendly and warm, thank you for this feedback. Wishing you all the best from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.

I stayed at MMGL on the last night of a 3-week trip to Tanzania. The staff were so kind, helpful, and friendly. Ameema in the office assisted me in organzing a last-minute half day trip in nearby Arusha National Park, and the co-owner Harry was also very encouraging and helpful. Their box lunch was the best I had of all the safari days. If the wait staff saw you once, they’d recognize you and treat you like a friend from that time on. I felt very taken care of. The place has a distinct historic feel, and the room had some of that atmosphere (such as old light switches); it felt a bit like home. The room was spacious with a nice view of the pond. It didn’t have air conditioning, but the fan was sufficient (& it wasn't that hot in November). The lodge grounds are beautiful, and it was fun to see the water buffalo. The food was delicious (chicken schwarma for dinner). In the trees and on the roof of the cottage, monkeys cavorted around—that was an entertaining send-off on my last evening in Tanzania!
Response from Property: We are so very happy to read about your positive experience here at our special Lodge; especially the part about our team members going the extra mile to ensure you had a comfortable and enjoyable time. As I write this, we have just experienced our first substantial November rains, which have certainly cooled things off a bit! We are honoured to have hosted you on your final night in Tanzania, and proud that we could give you such a good send-off. We hope to welcome you back again one day. Karibu tena! With best wishes from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.

We stayed there for 2 nights and had a very relaxing time. They can organize several tours, although during raining season is a bit difficult to go for forest walks. It is a bit far from Arusha town, but nice because quiet. They have nice gardens and you can relax in the compound watching birds and buffalos. Service is great. We stayed in the cottage room, very comfortable but no AC. We recommend if for a short and relaxing trip.
Response from Property: Thank you so much for your lovely review and informative feedback, we appreciate it so much. Yes, April certainly is the rainy season; which can make adventurous activities difficult. Thankfully, we do see the sun on most days, in amongst the downpours, which tend to last for a time and then clear up. During this time our gardens flourish, and we're enjoying a marked increase in resident birds and butterflies in our recently landscaped Sanctuary Garden. No AC as you mention, but an electric standing fan in every room; as well as openable windows (complete with mosquito nets). We hope to meet you again, karibu tena! With best wishes from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.

We had a nice stay at this place. The location itself is really beautiful and the stuff very kind and helpful! But the location is a bit far from the rest so you need to plan your time and schedule over here before you come. And we don‘t recommend doing the laundry at this place as it‘s just way too expensive. Unfortunately we didn‘t have any other choice, so we happend to pay 90 US-Dollar for a normal laundry load, which is way too much. So if you can, plan to do your laundry somewhere else.
Response from Property: Dear @Amendjoy, thank you very much for your valuable feedback and 4/5 rating. I'm not quite sure what is meant by the description of our location (Usa River), but we're halfway between Kilimanjaro International and Arusha Airports, with Arusha City Centre in-between; with the entrance to the Arusha National Park (Momella Gate), home to Mount Meru, a 15 minute drive away. As you know, we charge per clothing item laundered, dried and ironed, and our guests are given a list complete with prices to check off before the washing is done. Our prices (quoted in TZ shillings) are in line with similar establishments to ours; our highest prices are $3 to have a pair of hiking boots cleaned by hand; and $3,80 for a woolen cardigan or fleece/sweater, with a blouse or shirt or pair of trousers costing $2,30 and a pair of socks $1. You did have a large load of washing that required a fast turnaround, and it would have been more cost-effective to have the 73 items washed at a laundromat. We always strive to help, and would have been more than happy to try and arrange this for you, although this was not requested. We do apologise for the inconvenience caused. Thank you again for your feedback. Wishing you all the best from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.

A unique experience. Very friendly and competent staff. The room was clean, the atmosphere was so relaxing and calming. A truly great experience for 1st night in Tanzania. My only problem was it was not a long enough stay. Thank you to all the staff!

We spent our final night at the Mount Meru Game lodge. A wonderfully peaceful location, ideally placed to get into central Arusha and not far from Kilimanjaro airport. Friendly staff and owners Harry and Kim. Lovely pool. Best breakfast we had while in Tanzania! We hope to return and stay longer!
Response from Property: Dear Sara, thank you for your kind words and fantastic rating! It was our great pleasure having you stay here with us. Very happy to read the note about the breakfast - we have been working on our buffet selection and presentation, so this feedback is really encouraging, thank you. Karibuni tena!
