It was busy when I checked in, but the welcome was warm. The hotel is not accessible as it is so old and rooms are up a steep staircase.. The room was comfy and there were facilities for coffee & tea + biscuits. Bathroom was clean and cheery, good shower. Excellent breakfast.

We booked a ”Superior” room with lake view. It's true there was a good view of the lake through the window, but the window was small, incidental part of the room and suffered with condensation. There was nothing superior about the room - it had a damp musty smell and a generally tired look. On the plus side the bed was warm, clean and comfortable with good pillows. The corridor to the room had an air ”freshener” in it, I assume to mask the smell of dampness. It was turned up so high the air was barely breathable. The bathroom was also tired and had a warning about not burning yourself in the shower. This was clearly because the shower was not fitted with a thermostatic control. Although the hot water was fine in the evening, it was too cool to wash in by the morning so the warning was irrelevant! For dinner, the Lamb Shank and Chilean Merlot were very nice. As was the chocolate pear tartlet and raspberry sorbet. The salmon and its sauce were however uninspiring. The dining room was just a bit too bright and a bit too cold for a really comfortable meal though. The staff were always friendly and helpful. We were given a reduction for the hot water being cool water, but overall this stay was just not value for money.

Brief context / positives: I booked an overnight stay for me and my partner for his birthday - we stopped over in November 2024. Booking and check in was simple and staff were friendly throughout our stay. The location is gorgeous and the buildings are nice. We feel this hotel has great potential but felt a bit neglected. We did appreciate that guests get to use to the gym, badminton court, golf course, etc for free. We loved the natural vegan hand wash and shower gel! The bathroom had an LED mirror with demisting button, which was helpful. The shower bath was spacious and the shower pressure was amazing! Negatives: Firstly, my main reason for booking this hotel was the advertised leasure facicilities of swimming pool and crazy golf. However, when we arrived, we soon realised after walking the grounds that the swimming pool was closed for renovations - we had not been informed of this as any point prior to our arrival so we're majorly disappointed. Check in is at 3pm, which during this time of year, is when it starts to get dark. We noticed the crazy golf course had lights installed all around during our initial walk of the grounds and so decided we would unpack and then head back out around 5pm to play some crazy golf. However, when we turned up again, in the dark, we noticed that the majority of the outdoor lights weren't working and so you couldn't use the course. Considering the facilities are open until 7pm, you would think they would have ensured the lights were working! We did end up playing crazy golf the following morning, and cannot deny we had fun. However, the course was covered in leaves making it really difficult to play properly. Again, you would think these would have been swept off? We informed the hotel ahead of time that we're are both vegan, as we had booked breakfast the following morning. We were delighted to find a jug of oat milk had been left in our room to allow us use of the kettle. Tea and coffee was lovely (birchalls tea and ringtons coffee) However, one of the coffee sachets had gone off. Also, none of the complimentary biscuits were suitable for vegans which was a little disappointing but nothing major! On the surface, the room was nicely decorated and surface level clean - we bumped into the cleaners who were very friendly! However, the room and bathroom was riddled with black mould and there were cobwebs in places. The roller blind in the bathroom was covered in mould and even had a dirty mark from where I assume a moth had got caught and died?? There was also a little bit of limescale in the kettle. We were also a little disappointed with the breakfast as nothing appeared to be clearly labelled with allergens or as vegan. We did enjoy the bread which we assumed to be vegan (had toast with sunflower spread and jam pots) and some fresh fruit. I had to ask for non dairy milk for our hot drinks but for some reason the drinks from the machine tasted weird. We tried coffee sachets and tea bags but both tasted like
