How to make the most of a one-day road trip from Xiaoxitian in Xi County to Guangsheng Temple in Hongdong? I've personally tested this route and it's great — traveler post in Linfen

How to make the most of a one-day road trip from Xiaoxitian in Xi County to Guangsheng Temple in Hongdong? I've personally tested this route and it's great

Focus on the Mahavira Hall at Xiaoxitian and photography at Guangsheng Temple. Perfect for a road trip🚗 I. Know before you go 📍Xiaoxitian (Fenghuang Mountain, Xi County) The highlight is the Mahavira Hall—nearly 2,000 Ming Dynasty hanging sculptures packed into about 170 sqm. It's a golden, magnificent sight and the prototype for Little Leiyin Temple in Black Myth: Wukong. No flash photography inside📸 📍Guangsheng Temple (Huoshan Mountain, Hongdong) The three treasures: Feihong Glazed Pagoda + Yuan Dynasty murals at the Water God Temple + Zhaocheng Jin Tripitaka. The main photo spots are the Feihong Pagoda at the Upper Temple and Huo Spring at the Lower Temple💫 The drive between the two is about 2 hours (approx. 120 km) II. One-day timeline⏰ 7:30 AM Depart from Linfen Set navigation to "Xiaoxitian Visitor Center, Xi County" 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM Xiaoxitian (focus only on the Mahavira Hall to save energy) Arrive at the foot of the mountain at 9:30 AM, park, buy tickets, and head straight to the Mahavira Hall Don't worry about the side halls or audio guides; listening to a guide at the entrance for 5 minutes is enough👂 Morning is best for natural light. The hall faces east, so the light hits the hanging sculptures at an angle, making them look most three-dimensional Observe with your eyes and capture with your mind: the layered relationship between the celestial pavilions, musicians, and the main Buddha👀 12:10 PM – 2:10 PM Xi County → Guangsheng Temple Take the Changyan Expressway to the Jingkun Expressway, about 2 hours Guangsheng Temple Visitor Center Travel light: one camera body and a small lens are enough—unobtrusive and not cumbersome🎒 Photography route at Guangsheng Temple📷 Shoot the Upper Temple first (2:30 PM – 4:00 PM) 1️⃣ Shoot the panoramic view of Feihong Pagoda from the stone steps at the mountain gate (wide angle, pagoda + blue sky) 2️⃣ Close-ups under the pagoda: glazed reliefs, warriors, and wind chimes (side lighting is best) 3️⃣ Red walls of the Amitabha Hall + ancient cypress foreground, shoot a corner of the flying eaves 4️⃣ Backyard red wall framing: stand in the doorway, wearing plain colors or Hanfu works well 5️⃣ Mountain top viewing platform: pagoda + mountain landscape in the same frame Lower Temple + Water God Temple (4:00 PM – 5:00 PM) 6️⃣ Exterior of the Water God Temple: blue brick arches, ancient cypresses, and mottled walls (no flash inside the mural hall, do not shoot) 7️⃣ Huo Spring Water-Dividing Pavilion: flowing water + ancient pavilion, most tranquil before the evening blue hour 8️⃣ Ruined walls and empty halls of the Lower Temple: minimalist composition for a sophisticated look Lighting tip: the glaze is most translucent between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM. One hour before sunset, the Feihong Pagoda burns into a golden red🔥 5:00 PM – 5:40 PM Guangsheng Temple → Linfen Return trip takes about 40–60 minutes Back in the city around 6:30 PM, finish with a bowl of beef meatball noodles🍜 III. Photo spots at Xiaoxitian (outside the hall) Outer corridor of the Mahavira Hall: red walls and green beams + Zhongshan Fengxing plaque, medium shot compression Glazed ridge decorations on the roof: use a telephoto lens to shoot warriors and mythical beasts Prayer red rope tree: shoot upwards towards the sky + ribbons Back mountain viewing platform: Loess Plateau + small town of Xi County, atmospheric tone Comfortable for solo travelers: both temples are quiet, and the Lower Temple at Guangsheng Temple is less crowded, perfect for slow photography🚶 This route doesn't rush through temples or try to hit every spot; it captures the soul of the hanging sculptures and the light of the glaze in one day💫 The ancient pagoda stands quietly in front of the buildings on a sunny day; the beauty of Chinese architecture is stunning🏯

Accommodation in Linfen | I took my parents to stay in a courtyard house in southern Shanxi. We had a cup of tea as soon as we entered. — traveler post in Linfen

Accommodation in Linfen | I took my parents to stay in a courtyard house in southern Shanxi. We had a cup of tea as soon as we entered.

Linfen Accommodation | Staying with Parents in a Grand Courtyard in Southern Shanxi: A Cup of Tea Upon Arrival 🍵 This time in Linfen, my parents and I stayed in a suite. Upon arrival, we put down our luggage and had the complimentary tea from the hotel. When traveling with my parents, I really appreciate having this free time: no one has to rush anyone to unpack, we can sit down, have some tea, and then decide where to go next. 🏡 How comfortable is the room in this old courtyard? Before staying here, I was genuinely concerned about whether the room would be dark or cold in autumn and winter. The first thing I noticed upon entering was the arched brick ceiling, with layers of bricks laid out, visible from the bedside. The room had underfloor heating and air conditioning, and the toiletries were the same as what we usually use in hotels, so my parents didn't have to figure it out themselves. What I liked most about the suite was the availability of seating. When traveling with family, some want to lie down early, while others want to have tea and chat. Having a place to sit and relax makes the stay much more comfortable. Unpacking and packing didn't require all three of us to huddle around the bed. 🪟 The courtyard can wait until we've settled in. During the day, I'll stop and admire the wooden doors and latticed windows. Like the carvings on the brick walls, from a distance they appear as a gray blur, but up close you see layers upon layers of intricate patterns. At night, with the lights illuminating the porch, those daytime details fade, revealing the clear outlines of the courtyards. The hotel is located in the Gulou area of Linfen city. During the day, we can go out to see the ancient architecture, and then return for dinner and rest, making the itinerary relatively easy to break up. If I'm traveling with my parents, I'll allow more time for dinner; they can come back when they're tired, without having to complete the day's itinerary while exhausted. I'm sharing more photos of this stay because it has things I rarely photograph in hotels: the brick roof, the wooden windows, and the path back to the room after the courtyard lights are turned on.

I made a special trip to Shanxi just for this niche ancient temple! Was it worth it? — traveler post in Linfen

I made a special trip to Shanxi just for this niche ancient temple! Was it worth it?

Before coming to Shanxi, I rarely used the word "stunning" to describe an ancient temple! That was until I walked into this hidden gem of a thousand-year-old temple! 🏛️ It houses not only one of China's four great ancient pagodas—the exquisite, 500-year-old glazed Feihong Pagoda—but also the breathtaking Yuan Dynasty water deity murals! 🎨 This is my second time here, and I am still just as stunned by the beauty of the temple before my eyes! I can honestly say that even if it were just for this one niche temple, I would be willing to make a special trip to Shanxi! 💫 📍Location: Guangsheng Temple, Hongdong County, Linfen City, Shanxi (divided into Upper Temple and Lower Temple) 🚗Transportation: You can take a high-speed train to Hongdong Station, then take a taxi or bus. ⏰Hours: 8:00 AM–6:00 PM Compared to the Yungang Grottoes and the Wooden Pagoda of Yingxian, this thousand-year-old temple is very low-key, with far fewer tourists. If you come to Shanxi and have the time, I highly recommend visiting. ✨ 🔖Some tips: 1️⃣I suggest going as early as possible. Visit the Yuan Dynasty murals in the Lower Temple first, then head to the Feihong Pagoda in the Upper Temple. The sight of the sunset reflecting off the glazed ancient pagoda on a clear day is truly tear-jerkingly beautiful! 🌅 2️⃣The lighting inside the Lower Temple where the murals are is dim, so try to go early when there is more natural light. 3️⃣There are two great spots for photos with the Feihong Pagoda. One is on the small hill opposite the main gate of the Upper Temple, where you can capture a full shot of the pagoda. You can also enter the temple and go to the courtyard behind the Feihong Pagoda, using a medium-to-long telephoto lens to capture a stunning shot of yourself with the pagoda! 📸 Guangsheng Temple is so beautiful that my friend and I spent most of the day here, and we still felt like we hadn't seen enough even when it was closing time. If you are like us and love both ancient architecture and photography, be sure to set aside plenty of time for Guangsheng Temple. You won't regret it! 🥹

Xi’an: A thousand-year-old tree dressed in gold 🏯 — traveler post in Linfen

Xi’an: A thousand-year-old tree dressed in gold 🏯

Imagine standing beneath a golden tree that has witnessed centuries of Chinese history. 🍂🏯 This isn't just another autumn photo spot. It's a place where history, spirituality and nature come together. Welcome to Ancient Guanyin Temple in Xi’an, famous for its magnificent old ginkgo tree, traditionally associated with Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty. When autumn arrives, the tree's fan-shaped leaves turn brilliant yellow, creating a breathtaking contrast with the temple's traditional architecture. As the leaves fall, the courtyard transforms into a golden scene that looks almost unreal. It's one of those places where you want to put your phone down for a moment — then immediately pick it up again for another photo. 📸 ✨ HOW TO GET THE SHOT 1. Frame the tree with the temple. Instead of photographing the tree alone, include the traditional rooftops or courtyard in your composition. This creates a sense of place and makes the photograph feel distinctly Chinese. 2. Capture the fallen leaves. The golden carpet beneath the tree is part of the magic. Try a low-angle shot with leaves in the foreground and the tree rising behind you. 3. Keep your outfit simple. Cream, charcoal, camel and muted brown complement the yellow foliage without competing with the scenery. 4. Be patient. This is a famous seasonal attraction, so it can become busy during peak foliage. If photography is your priority, check access arrangements and visitor guidance in advance, and choose the quietest permitted time. 🍁 WHEN TO VISIT Xi’an's ginkgo season typically peaks in November, but timing varies with the weather. The best moment for a golden carpet is often shortly after the leaves begin falling, before strong winds or rain remove them. 💡 THE IMPORTANT HACK: Don't plan your visit based on a calendar date alone. Look for recent photographs from the temple or local travel updates. A week can make all the difference between a full golden canopy and bare branches. Remember that this is a religious site as well as a photography destination. Respect worshippers, follow photography rules and avoid disturbing the grounds for a shot. ✨ Ancient history, golden leaves and timeless architecture. Xi’an in autumn is something special. Save this for your China bucket list. #XianTravel #AncientGuanyinTemple #GinkgoSeason #ChinaAutumn #AutumnPhotography #ChinaTravel

A century-old courtyard hotel in the ancient city of Linfen — traveler post in Linfen

A century-old courtyard hotel in the ancient city of Linfen

Traveling to Linfen, I chose this ancient city museum hotel, and the experience exceeded my expectations 🌿 The entire courtyard is a classic, antique building with blue brick walls and old wooden doors. There is a beautiful view at every turn, and the atmosphere is incredible. The courtyard is very peaceful, but the guest rooms are a completely different story. They are spacious, impeccably clean, and equipped with modern facilities, making for a very comfortable stay. It offers great privacy, making it perfect for family gatherings or short stays with friends and family. The service is also very thoughtful, and they even provide free airport transfers, which is a huge plus. The breakfast selection is rich and delicious. Sitting quietly in the courtyard for a while is relaxing, and it is also a great spot for photos. If you are visiting Linfen and looking for a quiet, high-quality place to stay, consider this hotel.

3 things you must see before going to Shanxi — traveler post in Linfen

3 things you must see before going to Shanxi

Hello~ I'm Ziran, a travel lover. After completing the Southern Shanxi ancient architecture loop, I truly felt the profound history of Shanxi. Sharing a complete 7-day, 6-night itinerary reference, along with 3 useful travel tips. 📝 Itinerary reference (departing from Guangzhou) Day 1 Guangzhou → Linfen Yaodu Airport. Check into a hotel in downtown Linfen. Rent a shared e-bike to explore the Linfen Drum Tower, snack street, and the Linfen internet-famous wall. Day 2 Tiefo Temple (Dayun Temple), Linfen Museum (both are closed on Mondays). ———Self-driving starts from Day 3——— Day 3 Morning: Fencheng Ancient Architectural Complex | Afternoon: Xi County, enjoy local food, see the Drum Tower night view, stay near Xiaoxitian in Xi County. Day 4 Early morning: Xiaoxitian | Afternoon: Hukou Waterfall (both Shanxi and Shaanxi sides), stay in Ji County. Day 5 Drive towards Yuncheng. Morning: Wanrong Houtu Temple (Qiufeng Tower) | Afternoon: Feiyun Tower | Evening: Head to Jiezhou, stay near Jiezhou Guandi Temple. Day 6 Morning: Jiezhou Guandi Temple | Afternoon: Ruicheng Yongle Palace, Guangrenwang Temple | Evening: Arrive in downtown Yuncheng, stay in Yanhu District. Day 7 One-day tour of downtown Yuncheng Salt Lake: Yuncheng Museum, Gu Street, Catholic Church, Chishen Temple, Highway 006 photo spot. Return the car near the airport, Yuncheng Yanhu Airport → Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. If you don't do these 3 things, your travel experience will be greatly diminished: 1️⃣ Don't forget a telephoto/teleconverter lens Shanxi's ancient architecture hides a wealth of exquisite details; the roof beasts, caisson ceilings, and hanging sculptures are all incredibly beautiful. However, due to the height of the buildings and cultural relic protection, you often can't get close. Bringing a teleconverter lens is the only way to bring those complex and delicate patterns up close to capture them. I forgot to bring my lens to Xiaoxitian in Xi County, and I still consider it a small regret of this trip. 2️⃣ Don't self-drive without planning your route The ancient architecture in Shanxi is very scattered. Even within the same city, traveling between different counties and towns can take one to two hours. Unless the attractions are very close to each other, try not to schedule more than 2 spots in one day. 3️⃣ Don't skip hiring a guide Even if you've done your homework in advance, I highly recommend hiring a guide. The architectural logic, the Buddhist and Taoist stories behind the murals and sculptures—many of the true highlights of the attractions need a professional guide to explain them in detail. You can no longer climb the Feihong Pagoda at Guangsheng Temple, but our guide shared real photos of the glazed caisson ceiling with us. At Xiaoxitian, facing the niches filled with gods and Buddhas, it was also thanks to the guide that I understood the stories of the sculptors and the concept of the "Five Buddhas in One Hall." It helps you understand the blend of heavenly atmosphere and human life.

The Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area

The two routes now connect via the Yellow River Bridge. There's a transportation station in Shanxi after crossing the bridge; it's not far. I recommend bringing a raincoat, as you can see it from both sides. Although the core area is small, I still highly recommend it.

Little Western Paradise

A masterpiece of suspended sculpture! A tribute to the Buddhist kingdom! Xiaoxitian, with its profound historical heritage and exquisitely crafted painted sculptures, deeply moves visitors! Although it's crowded during the National Day holiday, it's still well worth a visit! Hopefully, these priceless treasures will be well protected!

Guangsheng Temple

The ancient pagoda was particularly impressive, and the glazed sculptures shimmered brilliantly in the sunlight. Their forms were incredibly lifelike. The only downside was the long wait for the shuttle bus; we got on the bus five minutes ago, but waited for another 40 minutes.

Yao Temple

Shanxi is truly an underrated treasure province, with many historical and cultural buildings hidden in the city's heart, including the Yao Temple. With over 1700 years of history, it contains ancient trees and buildings, serving as a sacred site for emperors throughout the ages to worship Emperor Yao and for descendants of Yan and Huang from home and abroad to pay homage to their ancestors. Perhaps because it's off-season now, there aren't many people, allowing for a leisurely experience.

Hukou Waterfall National Geopark

The Yellow River, the cradle of Chinese agricultural culture, is a place every Chinese person should visit. Although it carries a large amount of silt and is mostly muddy, it is still magnificent. On the surging waters of the Yellow River, rainbows can be faintly seen…

Dongyue Temple

Many people drive long distances to Xixian County to see Xiaoxitian (Little Western Paradise) and then sneak away. However, there are several other scenic spots worth visiting along the road from Linfen to Xixian County, one of which is Dongyue Temple. Located high in the mountains, it beautifully showcases Dongyue culture.

Fencheng Ancient Building Complex

Some attractions will never regain their former tranquility. For example, there is a group of ancient buildings that used to be so quiet and not open to the public. Now that it is open, there are always all kinds of crowds. Some people say that the gate has been blocked off and that an entrance fee may be charged in the future.
