Phimai Historical Park

✔️ Located in Phimai District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, this park features a stunning Khmer-style stone castle built during the Khmer Empire. Originally constructed as a Hindu sanctuary, it follows the architectural patterns of Khmer or Cambodian art, with a rectangular layout. Based on inscriptions, the Phimai stone castle is believed to have been initiated during the reign of King Suryavarman I. Later, it was converted into a Buddhist religious site during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. ✔️ A unique feature of the Phimai stone castle is its south-facing orientation, unlike other stone castles that typically face east. This design aligns with the route leading from the ancient city of Yasodharapura. ✔️ The park contains several fascinating structures, including a pavilion located in front of the outer wall. On the left side of the pathway leading to the main castle, there is a rectangular building formerly known as the "Treasury." Additionally, the park features the Naga Bridge, situated at the southern entrance of the castle. The bridge is made of sandstone, with its railings sculpted into seven-headed Naga serpents. Other notable elements include the gateway and the sacred enclosure wall. The gateway, or gopura, is positioned at the center of the enclosure wall and aligns perfectly on all four sides—north, south, east, and west. It is believed to represent the celestial realm, the dwelling place of deities, and serves as a sacred religious site.
