During the Oei era (1394-1428), Souma Sobenosuke Tokiyoshi Nyudo Yamamotobo Eien, who was the head priest of Hakone Gongensha, enshrined the shrine when he opened the Daijiyama Honbo temple of the Honzan school of Shugendo. In 1872, it was ranked as a village shrine and renamed Kumano Shrine.
