Nagoya: A Journey Where Tradition Meets Modernity

Nagoya, as the central hub of Japan's Chubu region, offers the convenience of a bustling metropolis alongside the serene charm of a traditional city. Unlike Tokyo or Osaka, it is less crowded, providing a more relaxed atmosphere while still boasting plenty of attractions and culinary delights. The first stop on my trip was Nagoya Castle. The majestic castle, with its golden shachihoko gleaming in the sunlight, was striking even from a distance. Inside, the exhibition hall provided a fascinating glimpse into Nagoya's history, dating back to the Edo period. The Japanese-style garden surrounding the castle seemed to offer a unique charm in every season, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll and photography. Next, I visited Osu Kannon Temple and the Osu Shopping District. The temple, though small and modest, exuded a traditional atmosphere with a steady stream of local visitors. The shopping district, with its maze of alleys filled with various shops and street food vendors, was a delight to explore. The misokatsu and tenmusu I tried here were rich in Nagoya's unique flavors and left me thoroughly satisfied. Of course, I couldn't miss Nagoya's signature dish, hitsumabushi. The grilled eel, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, was served in three distinct ways: eaten as is, paired with green onions, seaweed, and wasabi, and finally, with warm broth poured over it as ochazuke. Each method was special and delicious. On the second day, I visited the Nagoya City Science Museum. Its planetarium, one of the largest in the world, was awe-inspiring, and the interactive exhibits were engaging for both children and adults. In the evening, I headed to the Sakae area to see the Nagoya TV Tower and Oasis 21. As night fell, the city lights illuminated the area, creating a sophisticated nightscape. The surrounding shops and cafes provided a relaxing way to spend the evening. Nagoya is a city that encapsulates tradition, modernity, gastronomy, and culture. Its uncrowded and comfortable atmosphere made for a deeply enriching trip, even within a short itinerary. I left with a strong desire to visit again.
