Corfu's Ancient Byzantine Castle of Kassiopi

The Castle of Kassiopi sits on the northeastern coast of Corfu, Greece, right above the small, picturesque fishing village of Kassiopi. It is located on a rocky headland, giving it a clear view over the Corfu Channel, the narrow sea passage that separates the island from the mainland of Albania. This made the castle a highly important military point throughout its history. This ancient fortress is one of the oldest on the island, with its origins possibly dating back to the 6th century in the Byzantine era. Before the Venetians took control of Corfu, this castle, along with Gardiki Castle and Angelokastro, formed a triangle of defenses for the island. The castle is now mainly in ruins, with its walls, bastions, and towers having fallen into disrepair over time. The main gate, which is flanked by two large towers, has been restored. The large area inside the walls is now empty of buildings but is filled with olive trees. #mediterranean
