The Grand Hotel

My wife and I stayed at The Grand hotel from 03/05/24 to 06/05/24. The location of this hotel is excellent with lovely views over the Irish sea. I paid extra for a sea view as we wanted to look out over the sea. When my wife and I entered the room after checking in we found that the room and the bathroom were very clean and tidy, we couldn't fault the cleanliness. Our room had a kettle and a coffee machine which was good, but Kenco coffee, which is not so good, bad tasting coffee. Also, in the room is mobile electric radiators, which we did use even though it was the month of May! Also, there was always plenty of hot water to have a nice warm shower. That's the plus side of my review. Now the negative side: The hotel itself is old, in its heyday, I think that it would have been a very impressive building. But now in 2024, it needs a good refurbishment which would cost £millions. We noticed in the bedroom that was allocated to us that there were no bedside tables/cabinets, also, no bedside lights. This, we thought, was rather strange as every hotel that we have stayed in has bedside lamps. The bedroom furniture was kind of weird. As my wife said: ” it looks like the hotel owners have bought it from a charity shop”! See photos attached. Another negative is that the hotel doesn't have its own parking facilities. Residents are required to park in the street and at a daily cost of £7, which I had to pay for 2 days, as the third day we checked out before 10am. We only discovered after arriving in the hotel that there is no wifi in the rooms! Both of us were shocked by this to say the least. But, if guests want wifi access in the rooms then they have to pay. I think that reception told us that it's £7.00 or £7.50 per day! After paying £423 for 3 nights I thought that it was outrageous for the hotel reception to ask for £7.50 for wifi access. But they said that it is the owner's policy, owner being Britannia. Well, Britannia didn't get £7 - £7.50 from us. So; we will definitely avoid staying at a hotel in the future which is owned and run by the Britannia Group, unless they change their wifi policy for their rooms.

The staff at this hotel is excellent. Very helpful and friendly. Genuinely good people. The hotel is old and shows its age. The walls are very thin between rooms and our stay was spoiled by the inconsiderate people in the room next to us talking loudly past midnight. It was a cheap room and you get what you pay.

On arrival the receptionist was very helpful, Room was clean , beds comfortable ,we found the room very warm and was unable to open the window room 311, not a very view from this room. Hotel was full so unable to get another room . We had evening meal in the restaurant .food was excellent, and our waiter was very helpful. We had breakfast the following morning, but found that the bacon and black pudding was overdone as was the fried egg. But we should of waited for the Fresh cooked food to come out of the kitchen. Idid mention this to the waitress. Breakfast was the only downside to our stay

A lift available to all floors, room was nice and clean, en-suite was also clean and tidy with underfloor heating, which was a nice surprise., reception area was nice and tidy too, shown how to use the front door as it gets locked in the evening. Chose to eat breakfast at the hotel, full breakfast from £8.50p with a vegetarian option, no evening meals available but other hotels near by and some pubs serve food. Saturday morning I went around the Great Orme it really does have fantastic views, benches are dotted around so you can sit and take in the views.

The stay was fantastic! The hosts are hospitable and considerate. The location is good, only 10 minutes' walk from the conwy train station, also not far from tourist attractions. There is a free car park behind the building. The room is clean and well-equipped, and very warm during winter. The bed is very cozy as well. The breakfast was amazing and the recommended restaurants were also delicious. Highly recommended!(A pleasant view taken in front of the house attached)

The hotel is not far from the beach, although it is not directly facing the beach, but you can still see the hotel facilities. Although it is a bit old, it is still clean. The room has free costa coffee capsules. Milk and mineral water in the refrigerator are free 15 pounds per person. The breakfast is also very good with a sea view The price-performance ratio of this hotel is still very recommended. There are many restaurants when you go out. It takes only 2 minutes to walk to the small train on Mount Ohm

Super! Great location, only minutes of walk to the train station and the beautiful beach (kids could literally spend a whole day there), nice food and great staff! Peter was very so kind, helping to solve our problem which was our fault in the first place. Our triple room was not new but spacious and very clean, just feels like home. Strongly recommended!

The location is very good, right next to the pier, with sainsbury's local and many restaurants nearby. Staffs are kind and polite, and took the initiative to introduce us to sightseeing spots. The toilet is a bit small, and the hot water is unstable. Shampoo and shower gel are provided, but need to bring own toothbrush and toothpaste.
The Marlborough Hotel

We needed a little break from the norm during COVID so managed to secure a two night break away at The Marlborough. We was greeting by a friendly gentleman who went through all the covid secure processes and checked us in efficiently. We had a double and a single room, the double looked recently refurbed and was clean and comfortable. The single was very small, but as this was just for two nights it wasn't a problem, any longer and it would have been too small in my opinion. Rooms had a clean and spacious bathroom and each rooms had tea and coffee making facilities. The hotel was quiet given the situation with COVID but the bar was open and despite being the only ones who seemingly used the bar, the staff were always on hand to serve us drinks as we required. We found the two members of the evening team we encountered to be very friendly and chatty... friendly and welcoming staff make all the difference. The hotel is fairly dates yes, but its clean and comfortable so its no problem. We did find one or two negatives... The hotel were kind enough to reserve us a car parking space at the rear of the hotel, the spaces are VERY tight and have steel bollards folded into each space which I know damaged a fellow guests tyres. Simply remove a space and allow for 4 cars to park comfortably rather than 5 cars far too close. The lift was an experience. We could not get the 3 of us in the lift with our little cases, and we are not big people. It was very cramped and the lift was old a rickety and didnt quite reach the third floor - it feel short by around 8 inches. I never used the lift again as i didnt trust it but my mom did as she would have struggled with the stairs. Lastly, my biggest gripe was breakfast. I always feel that in a Bed and Breakfast, the breakfast is a real opportunity to shine. Sadly the Marlborough allowed this opportunity to pass. The full English breakfast is ok... there wasn't a lot of anything on the plate and what there was on the plate, was obviously cheap. Really disappointing. As you couldnt self serve, you was issued a tiny glass of juice of your choice and of course tea or coffee. The whole experience was underwhelming and prevented us from making dinner reservations with the hotel for that evening. Also the service in the breakfast room was quite over bearing. You couldn't sit and enjoy your coffee and toast, you had everything thrown at you the moment you walked in and then cleared away the moment you swallowed the last bite. Far too much and really spoilt things. 4 stars given here due to the staff we encountered in the evenings being so nice and for the hotel and rooms being clean and comfortable. For the money paid, it represented good value despite the odd negative. I would return but eat out for breakfast and park elsewhere.
