The kids like the tatami and hot springs here, except there is no dinner arrangement. The front desk staff was very friendly and the cleanliness was very good. The check-in greeting letter and snacks were well prepared.

The hotel itself does not have any facilities. Basically, the scope of activities is in the room, but the room is quite big, so it is not a big problem. The design is very thoughtful, the room and bathroom even have background music, and welcome refreshments. But if you want to choose a room, you may have to arrive early. When we arrived at 5 or 6 o'clock, there were no options left, only the double room opposite the front desk. But I have to say that it may also be due to the location of the hotel. It is very quiet and equipped with The music of chirping birds and fragrant flowers has a different feeling. The location in a residential area has its pros and cons. The disadvantage is that it is very inconvenient. There are no convenience stores or supermarkets nearby. The nearest supermarket is a 10-minute walk away. It is quite windy when the weather is cold, which is not pleasant. The nearest public transportation station is 10 minutes, and the subway is almost 15 minutes. If you have too much luggage and don't have a car, I don't recommend you to check in. Or you can find a way to store your luggage before coming back.

My wife found this hotel on TikTok and wanted to go, so we stayed here for her birthday! The room and staff were great👍 We also got a massage, which helped relieve the fatigue from walking so much! There were lots of things to see around, so it was wonderful.

The hotel is in a quiet alley, just walking distance to Kyoto Gyoen Garden and Nijo Castle. The hotel staff is very friendly. They sent many emails to help with dinner reservations before checking in. I like it. The front desk will greet you and say hello when you go out and enter the door. The room is huge for Japan, and the bathroom has a huge bathtub. The Japanese breakfast is rich, be sure to book breakfast.

The hotel is a room in a family hotel, with a total of three floors and no elevator. You need to carry your luggage downstairs by yourself. After walking for a day, it is really tiring to climb the stairs when returning to the hotel! Not suitable for families with elderly or children traveling. This is really discouraging! But the service of the hotel is good, the room is relatively spacious, and it is far from the urban area.

Response from Property: Dear Guest, Thank you very much for writing us a review and sharing your valuable insights with us. Since our concept is based on the architecture of traditional Kyoto houses, called "Machiya", it is a pity that the hotel does not have an elevator. However, our staff will be more than happy to help you with your luggage during check-in and check-out. For older guests or those with health issues or disabilities, we are also happy to offer ground floor rooms. We hope that the absence of an elevator has not affected your experience of the city too much and that you will be able to make many happy new memories with us. Best Regards, THE JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West

We had a wonderful stay at the JUNEI HOTEL Imperial palace west! The environment was very traditional Japanese and was very joyful to stay in. My daughters loved the complimentary popsicle offered and the bamboo forest looking bathroom. The staff were super helpful and kind! They helped me find great restaurants near by! We spoke some Japanese to the staff and they loved it (even though it wasn’t amazing). We had the best time and really got to experience the beauty of the traditional Kyoto style! My family loved our stay and would definitely recommend it for anyone wanting to find a cute Japanese hotel to stay in.

The JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West is the epitome of Japanese hospitality. From the moment my family and I arrived, the staff was friendly and accommodating. We especially wanted to thank Ryuji and Rie for being so kind and welcoming. From our in-room onsen to the futon beds on tatami mats our kids slept on, it felt like we were staying in someone’s home. The room was cozy but enough for a family with two teenagers. We highly recommend this lovely hotel and we would like to stay there again during our next visit to Kyoto.
Response from Property: Dear 769edwarda, Thank you very much for leaving us such a heartwarming review. It was a pleasure speaking with you and your lovely family. We also hope you were able to enjoy your hobby during your stay in Japan. If our hotel felt like a home in Japan to you, nothing could make us happier. We truly look forward to welcoming you back to Kyoto again someday. Thank you once again. Warm regards, A staff member from THE JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West

Had a wonderful stay in this lovely boutique hotel. Great location , lovely rooms and perfect service. Especially impressed with the front office team. Very annoying that you have to write over 200 words on this platform. No wonder it’s quickly becoming obsolete.

Great staff, fantastic service, great restaurant recommendations, comfortable bed and pillows, generous sized room, nice amenities and a hydrogen bath. I would definitely stay here again. The hotel is located in a residential neighborhood that’s not too crowded, but also, not central to any of the major sights.
Response from Property: Dear marilynb618, Thank you very much for your kind review. We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and truly appreciate your thoughtful feedback. As you noted, our hotel is situated in a quiet residential area—chosen to offer a calm and peaceful environment away from the busy tourist districts like Gion. While this means fewer restaurants and shops immediately nearby, we do have good access to many parts of Kyoto via public transportation, particularly by bus. We hope this didn’t cause too much inconvenience during your stay, and we’re truly sorry if it did in any way. It was a pleasure to host you, and we would be very happy to welcome you again in the future. Warmest regards, The staff of THE JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West

We loved our stay at the Junei. Our hosts were very welcoming on arrival giving us a tour of our room and services. In our room there was lots of little extras like the box that would have new treats in it each day. The service was outstanding, with all the staff very friendly and helpful. The location is super handy with buses passing nearby to easily take you to most of the popular tourist sites, but without feeling like you are surrounded by other tourists such is in the Gion area etc. Room is a great size and I loved the bath which was perfect for relaxing tired legs after a long day of sight-seeing. Highly recommend and would definitely stay there again.
Response from Property: Dear Cammers G, Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful review. We’re truly delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay at THE JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West and felt welcomed and comfortable thanks to check-in experience. We’re especially glad that you found the bath a relaxing way to unwind after exploring Kyoto, and that our location provided a peaceful yet convenient base for sightseeing. Your kind words about our staff and service mean a great deal to us, and we will be sure to share your feedback with the entire team. We sincerely hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back on your next visit to Kyoto. Warmest regards, The staff of THE JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West

We stayed here I'm April 2024. We were greeted by friendly staff when we got there and they showed us around the room. We enjoyed the stay here, the bath tub is huge and very relaxing. The hotel seems to be away from the tourist area of Kyoto and therefore is nice and quiet.
Response from Property: Dear seanfharvey, Thank you for taking the time to share your kind comments - we’re so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. We’re glad you found the room relaxing and especially appreciated the bathtub, which is one of the features we’re most proud of. As you noted, our location is set in a quiet residential area, a bit removed from the busier tourist districts, to offer a more peaceful atmosphere. While this means a little distance from the main sights, we hope the calm surroundings made for a restful stay. It was a pleasure to have you with us, and we would be happy to welcome you again on a future visit to Kyoto. Warmest regards, The staff of THE JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West

Absolute worst experience i've ever had at a property! We booked this expecting to get a 5 star treatment given the top reviews on tripadvisor and to have the true Japanese experience in Kyoto. However, when we arrived we were shocked to say the least. We took a taxi with our 2 children and luggage from train station to the hotel which is about 15 min drive and when we arrived the entrance to the "hotel" was so tiny and unwelcoming. The staff were clueless and not helpful and then they showed us to a room that is on the Ground Floor right next to the reception which is right next to the main door/street. It felt like we would be staying on the street basically. We asked to be given another room and to be shown a better place in the hotel and the answer was no sorry our hotel is fully booked. If you are fully booked and you are trying to maximise your profits, don't do it on the cost of your customers who have travelled half across the world to be shown a room next to the streets. It was also a small room (given that we booked for 4 people) and it was very claustrophobic. At the end, we demanded a refund and made another booking at another hotel. We booked the Nikko Princess Hotel which we were so glad with and it was at a much much better location where we walked everywhere. At the Junei location we would have needed taxis to go everywhere. In summary stay away from this property: uninviting, not luxurious, no lobby, no property space, very bad location and staff dont know how ot be welcoming or supportive.
Response from Property: Dear ymas2010, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. We are truly sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations, and that you were unable to find the experience you were hoping for. We understand that traveling with family can be tiring, and that arriving to something different from what one imagined can be frustrating. THE JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West is a small, boutique property rooted in the traditions of Kyoto hospitality, offering a quiet and culturally immersive experience. While this appeals to many of our guests seeking authenticity and a sense of local character, we understand that others may feel more at ease in a larger, more Westernized hotel environment—with spacious public areas and familiar amenities—even if such places offer less immersion in the local culture. As we were fully booked, we were unfortunately unable to relocate your room. After expressing dissatisfaction and, before ultimately deciding to cancel, suggesting the possibility of a discounted rate, we respected your choice and promptly issued a full refund. We hope this brought some level of resolution and satisfaction. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to refine the experience we offer. We wish you and your family all the best in your future travels. Warm regards, The Staff of THE JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West
