Paris
Exhibitions
To conclude the program within the building, which will close for five years of renovation, German artist Wolfgang Tillmans (born in 1968, Germany) has been given carte blanche to take over the 6,000 m² of Level 2 of the Bibliothèque publique d’information (Bpi). He will explore both the library’s form—its architecture and layout—and its functions, such as the transmission of knowledge, accessibility, and resource sharing, through the lens of his aesthetic universe.Rooted in the counterculture spirit of the early 1990s, Tillmans' photographic work delves into the profound transformation of media and information platforms in our time. By proposing new ways of making, viewing, and confronting images—both with each other and across disciplines such as video, music, text, and performance—he invites us to embrace a renewed humanism.

The exhibition traces the extraordinary life of this Italian artist, a Russian prince by birth and Parisian by adoption, who also had a brilliant career in the United States. A highly talented portraitist, he was much sought-after by a cosmopolitan elite, celebrities, the Parisian smart set and the first American film stars. His life was marked by decisive encounters and friendships with men of letters, Tolstoy in Russia and George Bernard Shaw in Paris, with whom he shared a vegetarian lifestyle, somewhat unusual for the era. In addition to the portraits that made his name, the exhibition will be highlighting his animal sculptures along with his astonishing work on behalf of animal rights, of which he was an ardent advocate well ahead of his time.

Michel Paysant < See Monet > | Musee de l'Orangerie

Exhibitions
The project, titled DALY, standing for Dessiner Avec Les Yeux (Drawing with my Eyes), is implemented with the help of an eye tracker (an oculometric procedure that highlights eye activity, the visual path, its fixation points and movements). So the eye rather than the hand becomes the tool. For the last thirty or so years, the artist has collaborated with numerous laboratories in creation of these works, including at the Louvre, the Centre Pompidou, the MUDAM in Luxembourg, the Zentrum Paul Klee in Berne, the Dadu Museum in Beijing, the Nouveau Musée National in Monaco and the Centre d’Art Verrier (CIAV) in Meisenthal. Michel Paysant focuses in particular on interpretation of artistic heritage, revisiting art history, “looking at” works through the filter of his own creation. In 2022, he was overcome by a desire to draw Claude Monet’s Water Lilies with his eyes. Initially, perhaps, because of the paradoxical nature of such an ambition: wanting to draw huge paintings characterised by their scope, their lack of beginning and end, regarded as one of the birth certificates in the west for a decentred, “all-over” form of painting, where no one part of the painting holds primacy over any other. Berthe Weill: Art dealer of the Parisian Avant-garde | Musee de l'Orangerie

Oct 8, 2025–Jan 26, 2026 (UTC+1)
Paris
Exhibitions
However, Berthe Weill’s name, which almost sank into oblivion for a while, is yet to blaze in the firmament of art dealers where Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, Paul and Léonce Rosenberg, Ambroise Vollard and Paul Guillaume feature so prominently. The exhibition, organised by the Grey Art Museum in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal and the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, aims to highlight a still little-known chapter in the history of modern art. At the beginning of the century, Berthe Weill committed herself to supporting artists under the slogan “Place aux jeunes” (Make way for the young), which was printed on her business cards. From Picasso (whose works she helped sell even before her gallery opened) to Modigliani (whose only solo exhibition in his lifetime she organised in 1917), she took part in the recognition of fauvism, regularly presenting exhibitions of works by the group of Gustave Moreau’s pupils gathered around Matisse. A little later on, she engaged with the cubists and School of Paris artists in battles for art and the emergence of its news forms as well as against conservatism and xenophobia. Despite the vicissitudes of fortune, her interest in young artists never wavered and she was fierce in her defence of very different figures, some of whom did not belong to any specific movement, giving them a chance by organising one or more exhibitions. She also promoted a number of women artists, without bias to gender or school, from Émilie Charmy, whose work she exhibited regularly from 1905 to 1933 and whom she described as a “friend of a lifetime”, to Jacqueline Marval, Hermine David and Suzanne Valadon, who was much in the public eye at the time. By 1951, the year she died, she had presented over three hundred artists at her gallery’s four successive addresses: 25 Rue Victor-Massé; 50 Rue Taitbout from 1917; 46 Rue Laffitte from 1920 to 1934, and finally 27 Rue Saint-Dominique. She organised hundreds of exhibitions until her gallery finally closed in 1940.

Chaosmos | Paris

Feb 8–Jul 26, 2025 (UTC+1)
Paris
Exhibitions
“Chaosmos” is an invitation to 12 artists to tell us about the cosmos and invent new ways of inhabiting the Earth. Welcome to Chaosmos, a world that deconstructs, in order to better reconstruct, in time and space, the place in the universe that we attribute to ourselves and the way in which we inhabit the world, the traces that we leave there, the links that we establish there. From this precariously balanced zone emerge the works of twelve contemporary artists, from several countries around the world: South Africa, Belgium, Canada, Spain, France, Guyana, Japan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia. They evoke the relationship between our conception of the cosmos and our attitude towards the preservation of life on Earth.

Le Douanier Rousseau, in the land of dreams | Paris

Feb 14–Jun 29, 2025 (UTC+1)
Paris
Exhibitions
The latest creation of the Atelier des Lumières takes you on the first steps of naive art in France. Spontaneous, dreamlike, sometimes childish, this new approach to painting is embodied in the works of Henri Rousseau. At the end of the 19th century, this self-taught painter and pioneer of naive art drew his inspiration from observing in detail the vegetation and animals from elsewhere, from the greenhouses and menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. Mocked by his contemporaries, but admired by avant-gardists such as Delaunay, Apollinaire, Picasso and Kandinsky, his idealistic painting with bright colors and clumsy perspectives would later allow him to free himself from the academic standards of the time by opening the way to modernity in painting. Henri Rousseau makes you rediscover the Paris of the industrial era, populated by frozen characters who observe us under a sky where zeppelins and hot air balloons float. Without ever having left France, he also weaves the colorful story in the heart of a dense plant kingdom where the eyes of tigers pierce the foliage and the landscapes transport us to imaginary lands. In this parallel universe where the reality of everyday life is invaded by a profusion of dreamlike details, the one who was nicknamed "Customs Officer" because of his job at the Paris grant, invites us to escape by dreaming with our eyes wide open, from France to a jungle with the scent of Eden.
