As autumn deepens, it is the perfect time to head into the mountains. We departed on time at 8:30 AM from the Atour Hotel in Changchun. With the cool mountain autumn breeze, we kicked off our full-day Changbai Mountain autumn foliage tour. It was a three-hour drive heading east, chasing the autumn romance and surprises hidden deep in the Jilin mountains. Our first stop was Diaoshuihu National Forest Park. The autumn colors here were brilliant—reminiscent of Laobiangou in Liaodong, which I visited last year—but with a unique, serene tranquility. Stepping into the forest felt like stumbling into nature's overturned palette. The mountains were ablaze with color, with deep reds, warm yellows, and vibrant greens intertwined, stretching into a vast, colorful forest. A mountain stream gurgled nearby, clear springs trickled over volcanic rocks, and the breeze rustled through the trees, sending leaves dancing. Walking along the trail beside the stream, every step revealed a new autumn scene, every glance felt gentle. The mountain air was refreshing and healing, blowing away all the fatigue of the journey. At noon, we stopped for a simple meal of Northeast-style dumplings. The steaming, homemade, savory flavors warmed both stomach and heart, recharging us for the afternoon. After a short rest, we headed to Longwanqun National Forest Park – Sifangding. Compared to the crowded, trendy tourist spots, this place was exceptionally quiet and uncrowded, allowing us to enjoy the vastness and peace of the forest all to ourselves. We took the scenic shuttle up the mountain, then rode the elevator directly to the 10th-floor observation tower, easily reaching the summit to take in the panoramic mountain views. We were incredibly lucky today, encountering the most healing autumn wonderland at Sifangding. Looking out from the high tower, the mountains stretched out in layers, with clouds and mist gently rolling and flowing between them. A beam of golden light pierced through the thick clouds, softly illuminating the rolling landscape, creating a scene of dappled light and swirling mist. The distant mountains appeared and disappeared in the thin haze, ethereal and magical. Standing there at that height, I felt truly moved and healed, as if I had stumbled into a fairyland on earth. After soaking in the sea of clouds and autumn mountains, we drove another three hours to Erdaobaihe Town and checked into the Regina Hot Spring Hotel on the north slope of Changbai Mountain. We spent the day traversing mountains and taking in the stunning autumn scenery, leaving the evening for pure relaxation. Soaking in a volcanic hot spring washed away the day's fatigue, followed by an authentic Northeast-style bath and massage. Autumn in Changbai Mountain is worth it!

I've visited Changbai Mountain several times a year for years now. Every visit feels different. This time, I discovered a few hidden gems in Erdaobaihe Town, located at the foot of the mountain. 🌋 Changbai Mountain Natural Museum & Geological Museum Walking into this museum at the foot of Changbai Mountain is a surprising and awe-inspiring experience. The massive volcanic sand table unlocks the science of volcanoes, helping you understand how Heaven Lake was formed and allowing you to see volcanic rocks and geological evolution. With thousands of animal and plant specimens, you can immerse yourself in the entire vertical ecological belt of the mountain. From Siberian tigers to various wild flora and fauna, the collection is truly staggering. 🎆 Enduli Town When dusk falls, take a stroll through Enduli Town. The entire district is packed with delicious food, unique cultural and creative shops, and small bars. The Water Square hosts brilliant fireworks at night. Walking through the district, you'll also find folk performances and parades. The evening breeze, delicious food, and fireworks—this is what a romantic night in Changbai Mountain is all about. ☕️ 42 Degrees North Latitude Specialty Coffee While wandering around the town in the evening, I stumbled upon a hidden gem by the river. I ordered a cup of Schisandra tea to savor the unique taste of Changbai Mountain. The shop is not only incredibly photogenic, but it also offers a wide range of local handmade souvenirs, including linden honey, ginseng honey slices, and wild mushrooms. It’s so relaxing to enjoy a cup of coffee while picking out some gifts to take home.

How can you not take a road trip on the G331 during autumn at Changbai Mountain? Straight to the point! 🚗 Erdaobaihe Town > Changbai Mountain North Scenic Area > (scenery in the photos is on this stretch) > Chongshan Town > Junjianshan > Nanping Town > Baijin Township > Sanhe Town > Tumen/Yanji ⏰ The whole trip is about 350 km and takes about 7–8 hours with stops. ⚠️ Tips ✔️ The autumn colors should be more vibrant during the National Day holiday; they are currently still a bit green. ✔️ If you only want to see the autumn scenery in the photos, it's mainly concentrated between the Changbai Mountain North Scenic Area and Nanping Town (you can check the map navigation for the section covered by Changbai Mountain, roughly after the first border checkpoint). It's completely empty with very few cars! Don't miss this section. The rest is just ordinary mountains and trees. After Junjianshan, you can choose to head straight to Yanji, or continue forward if you want a closer look at the North Korean villages on the other side. ✔️ There aren't many gas stations along the way, so it's recommended to fill up before you leave ⛽️ ✔️ There are basically no shops, so you can buy some food and water in advance. There are restaurants in the towns along the second half of the route. ✔️ The entire route is along the border, so drones are not allowed. Have your ID ready, as there will be several checkpoints. ✔️ The road conditions are great, all paved roads, so sedans will have no trouble at all. When I came to Changbai Mountain to see Heavenly Lake, I decided to make Erdaobaihe Town my first stop without hesitation. To make it easier to get to the North Slope the next day, I carefully selected Leiman Hotel. I didn't expect to find such a gem! Its location really won me over ❤️ It's tucked away in Alice European-style Street, and stepping outside feels like being in a charming European town. The street views are incredibly romantic; just wandering around downstairs and taking photos is enough to get some great shots 📷. It's also very close to the Changbai Mountain North Slope Distribution Center. I didn't have to rush at all to catch the bus to Heavenly Lake in the morning, which saved me a lot of travel fatigue. 🛏️ About the stay: After being out in the cold wind on the mountain all day, opening the door to such warmth was amazing. The room is tastefully decorated, and every corner is spotlessly clean—even those with a bit of a germaphobic streak will feel at ease. What I want to praise the most is the bedding; it's so soft! After a hot shower, lying down felt like a big hug for my exhausted self, and I was fully recharged~ There are plenty of dining options nearby, too. Taking a stroll along the street in the evening and then having a hot, local meal really maximizes that relaxed vacation vibe. For those planning to visit the North Slope of Changbai Mountain, you can definitely book this place without hesitation. Stand by the railing with one hand on it and the other in your pocket, keeping the waterfall and volcanic slopes in the background. Turn your body slightly, extend one leg naturally, and frame the valley and forests in the background for a quiet, travel-style photo. Photo 6 | Close-up of rocks and meadows The rocks and meadows of Changbai Mountain have great texture. Black stands out against the snow-capped mountains, forests, and mist, offering more depth than lighter colors and making it better for travel photography. 🗓 3-day, 2-night itinerary reference Day 1 | West Slope route: Heaven Lake → Alpine Garden → Changbai Mountain Grand Canyon See Heaven Lake in the morning and walk the canyon in the afternoon. The West Slope has an expansive view, perfect for landscape shots and full-body portraits. Day 2 | North Slope route: Changbai Waterfall → Julong Hot Spring → Underground Forest This day is better for photos of the waterfall, boardwalks, and forests. I recommend entering the scenic area early when there are fewer people and the light is softer. Day 3 | Leisurely tour around the mountain: Erdaobaihe Town → Magic World Scenic Area → Departure Don't plan anything too far for the last day. There is a lot of walking in the scenic area, so I recommend wearing non-slip, comfortable outdoor shoes. 3. It's windy at Heaven Lake, so bring a windproof jacket and stay warm after taking photos. 4. Do not stand on the edge of boardwalks or on slippery rocks to take photos; stay safe. 5. The forest area is dry in autumn; be careful with fire and do not use open flames. The beauty of Changbai Mountain isn't just in the tourist attractions. Take your time walking and shooting, and capture the snow-capped mountains, forests, morning mist, and evening breeze in your album—that's what makes for a great trip.
Fly to Changbai Mountain and step into a kaleidoscope of autumn colors, where Heaven Lake meets the colorful forest
Autumn in Changbai Mountain is like a mountain living in two seasons at once. At the foot of the mountain, there are still golden broad-leaved forests and red maples. As you ride the off-road vehicle up, the Erman's birch forests change from golden to dark red. Further up, the alpine tundra has withered into a yellowish-brown, and the volcanic rocks by Heaven Lake may have already received the first snow of the year. Late September to early October is the peak period for Changbai Mountain's colorful forests, where red maples, golden Erman's birches, and dark green firs intertwine. If you're lucky, you might even catch the colorful forest and the first snow in the same frame. The National Day holiday falls right at the tail end of the peak autumn colors. Visiting after the holiday means the red leaves have started to fall, but the visibility of Heaven Lake is actually higher, and there are far fewer crowds. Day 1: Fly to Changbai Mountain and stay in Erdaobaihe Town. After arriving at Changbai Mountain Airport or the high-speed railway station, head to Erdaobaihe Town to settle in. In the afternoon, take a walk in the Chinese Merganser Park; the birch forests along the river have turned yellow, and you might occasionally see mergansers swimming on the water. In the evening, enjoy a Korean-style barbecue in town, paired with a bowl of cold noodles. Day 2: Head to the North Slope to reach the main peak and see Heaven Lake. Depart from Erdaobaihe at 7:00 AM, enter the scenic area through the North Slope gate, take the eco-friendly bus to the transfer center, and then purchase a ticket for the shuttle bus to the main peak. The North Slope offers the most classic view of Heaven Lake. As the off-road vehicle climbs along the winding mountain road, the Erman's birch forests outside the window change from golden to dark red, and then to the withered yellow of the alpine tundra. At the summit, Heaven Lake unfolds beneath your feet, its deep blue surface surrounded by a ring of snow-capped mountains. ✨ You guys, seriously! I originally brought my kid to Changbai Mountain, but on the first day, I was totally captivated by this thousand-year-old fishing village on the Songhua River 😭 The entire village is on an isolated island. You park your car on the shore and have to take a speedboat to get there. As soon as my kid got on the boat, they started yelling with excitement, asking, "Mom, are we going on an adventure?" Haha 🚤 · 🏝️ Day 1. Speedboat to the island It takes about 10 minutes by speedboat 🚤. With the river breeze blowing, the banks look just like Little Guilin... I was amazed as soon as we got on the island. This village has such a vibe! There are two large characters on the shore, and an ancient boat greets us! The entire resort is built to imitate a thousand-year-old Bohai fishing village, with ancient-style courtyards of all sizes scattered across the island. Dried fish and fishing nets hang at the entrances, and every corner is full of the vibe of an old fishing village. 🌽 We checked in first and stayed in a courtyard with a friend's family. The kids ran around in the yard, and we could sit and drink tea 🍵 · 😋 Exploring the village and eating snacks After settling in, we went for a stroll. There's a tofu grinder in the village; the freshly ground soy milk and tofu pudding were incredibly fragrant. My kid even tried pushing the grinder and worked up a sweat 💪. There was also fried tofu, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside; we ate three pieces in one go with some chili powder. The pancake shop also makes them fresh; crispy with some pickled vegetables, it was delicious 😍. When we got tired of walking, we ducked into the village cafe, ordered a latte, and sat for a while ☕️. The view outside the window was stunning! · 🌊 Paddleboarding and jet skiing In the afternoon, we went paddleboarding for a while; it was 78 yuan for unlimited play 🏄♀️. We also tried the jet ski. The instructor took us for a ride on the river, and my kid screamed until their voice was almost hoarse. Our family sat there for a long time; it was so quiet that only the insects were chirping. It was so healing 🌙 · 🌅 Morning mist on the second day We set an alarm to wake up and see the morning mist. Pushing open the door, there was a layer of white mist on the river, and the mountainside looked like it was wrapped in a silk scarf. My kid woke up on their own, ran out, and was stunned, shouting, "Mom, it's so beautiful!" At that moment, I felt it was really worth it to bring my kid out 🥹 After watching the mist, we went back for breakfast: boiled eggs, stir-fried dishes, steamed buns, wontons, noodles, coffee ☕️, salad 🥗... both Chinese and Western food, take your pick! · Two days and one night, no rushing, no tiring out the kid, eating well, and staying comfortably. Changbai Mountain
Changbai Mountain, true to its name, is incredibly clean! The restrooms in all areas were spotless, with sensor-activated flushes and hot water for handwashing – a truly touching experience for an autumn/winter trip. The restrooms had different themes, such as sables and black bears, adding a touch of vibrancy. We arrived a little late; most of the leaves had fallen, and it was the dry season, so the waterfalls weren't at their most beautiful. The small Tianchi Lake wasn't worth visiting yet; it's small, the water quality is so-so, and the surrounding forests are bare. Overall, the autumn air was crisp and clear. The 50-kilometer stretch from the distribution center to the transfer center was beautiful, vibrant with color, and Tianchi Lake was stunning. I especially loved the forest at the bottom of the valley; the pine scent was wonderful! I highly recommend walking to the end; there are vast, fairytale-like forests there, and we were lucky enough to encounter foxes and quite a few chipmunks along the way!

Although many say China's Snow Town is becoming too touristy & expensive (compared to Snow Valley), I think it is still worth visiting. There are lots of ACTIVITIES to do all within walking distance. Reindeer rides, feeding, skiing, photo op including the hot water vapor video etc. One down side is that there was no signage to designated bus to/from Yabuli station (no waiting area either). It is also difficult to find restaurants for people with dietary restrictions (eg. Vegetarian, halal etc).

It's definitely worth a visit. The reindeer are all very well-behaved, so don't be afraid they might hurt you. They're all very affectionate. The biggest issue is that the male reindeer were in heat, so the smell was quite strong, but everything else was great. The kids loved it!
