Majestic Meteora, Greece
Meteora is so mesmerising! It's a great place to slow down, contemplate, meditate and enjoy the most magnificent sunset!
Meteora. An other worldly experience in Northern Greece
In the north of the Greek mainland is a wonder and an incredible sight to behold. Just outside of the town of Kalabaka are the Meteora monasteries.
The name, Meteora, means lofty or elevated and is closely related to the word meteor. This really describes this place in a nutshell. I couldn’t help but be amazed and in awe of the pillars coming up from the valleys below.
Many of these cliffs house monasteries and convents that are still in use today. Some of them are open for tours and visits.
Make sure you head to one of these cliffs and take in the sights below. It’s no wonder that this town is registered as a UNESCO world heritage site. It’s unlike anything you’ve seen before - or probably will ever see again!

Greece - Meteora, place you must visit once in your lifetime
#naturelovers
Everyone who loves hiking must visit this place at least once in their life.
We grabbed a train from Athens to the small village called Kalambaka that sits right next to these magnificent rock formations. The hike takes between 2-4 hours depending how often stop. As we kept stopping to enjoy the views and take endless photos, you can imagine it took us 4 hours. If you use the little roads to hike, hidden between the trees it is faster instead of following the main road where the car passes.
We took those little pathways and the good thing is the forest provided us a shade in the hot weather, so it made the hiking much easier.
Make sure you pack food, water and wear comfy shoes!

Cliffs and Monasteries: A Meteora Adventure
Meteora in Greece is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is famous for the stunning rock formations and also the ancient monasteries built high on top of the rocks. It is one of the highlights of my Greece trip.
Getting There - Went there with a day tour group and it is about 4hours bus ride from Athens. But totally worth it.
Attractions - Only a few monasteries are still operating now.
1. First highlight is definitely the majestic natural rock formations. Take time to admire the natural wonder and enormous rock columns.
2. The Holy Monastery of Varlaam - Second biggest monastery in Meteora, it is named after a monk. He managed to climb up a cliff in 14th century and establish the monastery. The museum has many valuable relics and art.
3. Monastery of St. Stephen - This monastery is now a nunnery. You can get breathtaking views from the monastery and also learn about the religion.
Food & Restaurants - Had some delicious traditional greek food in a tavern in Kastraki. Had some delicious moussaka.

My day trip to Meteora was one of the highlights of my Greece vacation! 🌄 The moment I arrived, I was blown away by the sight of those massive rock pillars rising out of the ground, with the ancient monasteries perched on top like they were straight out of a fairytale. Visiting each monastery was such a unique experience, and for just €3 per monastery, it was totally worth it. I loved exploring the Great Meteoron Monastery – the largest one – with its beautiful frescoes and historic artifacts. The views from up there were unreal! 😍
Afterward, I visited the Holy Trinity Monastery, which is a bit harder to reach but offers some of the best views in Meteora. The climb was quite a workout, but the peace and tranquility made it all worthwhile. 🌿 If you're not much of a hiker, you can still enjoy the scenery by taking a scenic drive around the area. I also took a short detour to the town of Kalambaka for lunch – it's a charming place with some great local food. 🥗 Don't forget to visit Theopetra Cave nearby to see one of the oldest archaeological sites in Greece.
Overall, a day at Meteora is an experience you can't miss if you're visiting Greece. Just be sure to wear comfy shoes because there's a lot of walking involved! 🚶♂️ #trip #MeteoraMagic #GreeceTravel #MonasteryViews #DayTripAdventures #NatureAndHistory
Mountain views from Meteora 🇬🇷
#myhiddengems
Standing atop the cliffs of Meteora, the mountain views took my breath away! 🌄 Nestled in central Greece near the town of Kalambaka, Meteora offers one of the most stunning landscapes I’ve ever seen. The sheer cliffs, topped with ancient monasteries, give way to panoramic views of the Pindus Mountains and the vast Thessalian plain below. It’s a feeling of being on the edge of the world, surrounded by natural beauty and centuries of history. There’s no entrance fee to wander around the cliffs, but visiting the monasteries costs around €3 each, which is totally worth it for the vistas alone. 🏰
The hike to the top was a bit of a workout, especially with the winding steps and rocky paths, but each step revealed a more magnificent view. The sunset from these heights was magical, painting the mountains in shades of orange and pink. 🌅 I highly recommend starting early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and heat. There’s something incredibly peaceful about watching the fog lift over the mountains, revealing the dramatic peaks and valleys below.
Nearby, Kalambaka and the village of Kastraki offer great spots to grab a coffee or traditional Greek food after a day of hiking. 🥙 I loved exploring the narrow streets and enjoying a quiet moment with a Greek salad and some baklava. Don't miss out on exploring some of the smaller monasteries, each offering unique perspectives of the mountains and a sense of tranquility. Meteora is more than just a destination; it's an experience that fills your soul with awe and wonder. 🌄🧘♂️ #trip #MeteoraViews #MountainMagic #GreeceGetaway #NatureLovers #TravelGoals
The cliffs of Meteora 🇬🇷
#myhiddengems
Visiting the Cliffs of Meteora in Greece was like stepping into a different world! 🏞️ The combination of nature's grandeur and human ingenuity was breathtaking. Located in central Greece, near the town of Kalambaka, Meteora features enormous rock pillars topped with centuries-old monasteries that seem to be suspended in mid-air. There’s no entrance fee to hike around the cliffs themselves, but visiting each monastery costs around €3. I explored a few, like the Great Meteoron and Varlaam, which offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape and a peaceful, spiritual experience. 🏰🙏
The hike up the cliffs was steep and a bit challenging, but the panoramic views from the top were absolutely worth every step. From there, you could see the Thessalian plain stretch out for miles, and the sense of serenity was overwhelming. 🌄 The monasteries themselves are masterpieces of architecture, blending perfectly with the natural surroundings, and the frescoes inside are incredible to see up close.
The nearby town of Kalambaka is charming and full of local tavernas serving delicious Greek food. 🥙 I had a fantastic meal of souvlaki and moussaka, which was the perfect way to end a day of exploration. If you're into photography or just enjoy stunning landscapes, make sure to bring a camera – the views are truly unforgettable. 📸
If you have time, consider visiting the nearby town of Trikala or even taking a day trip to the scenic village of Metsovo in the Pindus mountains. Meteora is a must-see if you find yourself in Greece, combining natural beauty, history, and spirituality into one unforgettable experience! 🌅 #trip #MeteoraGreece #TravelGreece #MonasteryViews #NatureAndHistory #GreekAdventure
climbing on a rocky mountain
who could have thought this sacred and spiritual monasteries, a marvelous and incredible rock formation. it was an awe inspiring experienced i had during my trip to meteora. visiting each monasteries was crowded and had to slowly get along with the crowd from room to room. the fees for each monastery was only 3 euros and ladies need to wear a dress or skirt in order to enter however there were rentals of the skirt if needed. there were six monasteries altogether for viewing however each monastery has visiting hours therefore please check before the visits. it is definitely a must visit when in greece.
