Experience Marseille by Boat: A Must-Visit to the Nearby Frioul Islands
This time, I traveled to the southern French city of Marseille and took a boat from the city to the Frioul Islands, located in the sea outside Marseille. The islands boast stunning natural scenery and blue waters! The boat company is LeBateau, and the boat itself is primarily white and blue. As the boat sets sail, you can see the azure ocean, which is truly breathtaking! Additionally, as the boat slowly heads out to sea, you can see the island's scenery from a distance!

Marseille. What to eat
1 Bouillabaisse
Marseille has an abundance of seafood, and me and my fellow chefs put it in the spotlight in this popular seafood stew. Each is different but often includes monkfish, scorpion fish, spider crab and lobster bubbling away slowly in a saffron and tomato broth. We dish it out at the table and serve with croutons and mayonnaise. Locals eat this dish on a Sunday usually, because it takes such a long time to prepare and is enjoyed as a communal dish after church.
2. Anchoïade, the iodine taste of the Mediterranean sea in every bite
Anchoïade is a typical Provençal recipe prepared with anchovies, capers, olive oil and garlic. Traditionally pounded in a mortar, this speciality is a variant of the Nice pissaladière or tapenade. It is usually eaten as an aperitif on slices of bread, in a salad or in an Occitan fondue (hot or cold) where the raw vegetable sticks are dipped in the preparation.
3. Les pieds paquets, or offal in the spotlight
According to legend, the origin of the pieds paquets (or feet and packages) goes back to the creation of the Phocaean city, 2600 years ago. Gyptis, a Celto-Ligurian princess, chose Protis, a Phocaean captain who had just arrived, as her husband. As a token of love, she offered him a cup of wine, rolled lamb pansies stuffed with meat and fragrant herbs. This dish was then considered to be the ancestor of the Marseilles parcels, to which lamb’s feet were later added. In reality, the recipe for pieds paquets was created by Louis Ginouvès, a chef in the Pomme district of Marseille, in 1880.
4. And of course - oysters! Nice and fresh 🦪

Trip to Marseille 🇫🇷
It was a weekend getaway to Marseille, France. We started our day by exploring the vibrant heart of Marseille, the Vieux-Port (Old Port). As we walked along the picturesque waterfront, we were mesmerized by the sight of fishing boats and luxury yachts docked side by side. The lively atmosphere, with street performers and bustling cafes, set the perfect tone for our weekend adventure. We would recommend taking the time to stroll through the harbor, soaking in the sights and sounds of this historic area. Don’t miss the morning fish market, where you can watch local fishermen selling their fresh catch, perfect for some authentic photo opportunities 📸
📍 Quai des Belges, 13001 Marseille, France
After the Old Port, we visited Le Panier, Marseille's oldest neighborhood, filled with colorful buildings, charming boutiques, and art galleries. We wandered through the narrow streets, stumbled upon quaint courtyards, and admired the street art that gives this district its unique character.
📍Le Panier, 13002 Marseille, France
For lunch, we headed to Chez Fonfon, a local institution renowned for its Bouillabaisse. The rich, flavorful seafood stew 🍲 was just as good as we had heard, and we savored every bite of the perfectly seasoned broth and fresh fish 🐟 This place is popular, so we’d recommend making a reservation in advance.
💰€45 per person.
📍140 Rue du Vallon des Auffes, 13007 Marseille, France
The next morning, we embarked on a short hike in the Calanques National Park. The dramatic limestone cliffs plunging into turquoise waters were breathtaking, and we highly recommend taking the trail to Calanque de Sugiton. The trail was moderately challenging but rewarding, and we cooled off with a dip in the crystal-clear cove. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water.
📍 Route de la Gineste, 13009 Marseille, France
In the afternoon, we visited the *Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, which offers the best panoramic views of the city. The climb to the basilica is steep, but we found it well worth the effort. The stunning architecture and beautiful mosaics inside are a must-see, and the view from the top was simply unforgettable. I would recommend spending some time here to take in the sights and capture some great photos 📸
📍Address: Rue Fort du Sanctuaire, 13281 Marseille, France
To end the trip, we treated ourselves to L’Epuisette, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its exceptional Mediterranean cuisine. The tasting menu was a culinary journey, featuring dishes like sea bass carpaccio and lavender-infused lamb. Each course was beautifully presented, and the flavors were exquisite 🙌🙌🙌
💰 €90 per person

MAGNIFICENT WOODED PARK IN MARSEILLE.
On the southern borders of the city, Pastré is a magnificent park which extends as far as the hills of Marseilleveyre. One hundred and twelve hectares of greenery with a magnificent 19th century Provençal bastide built during the Second Empire. Located between Pointe Rouge and Grotte Roland, Parc Pastré is also a gateway for hiking in the calanques. For many people in Marseille, it is the "end of the world", as the place is far from the city center and very exotic. It is also one of the most beautiful gardens in Marseille. Between the sea, hills, huge gardens, streams, lakes, ponds... The park conceals many surprises that are a delight for children, but also for the grown-ups.
Whether you are with your family, with your lover or with the goal of playing a soccer with your friends, Pastré is the ideal destination. Far from any hustle and bustle, enjoy a trip to a natural setting as beautiful as rare in Marseille. It is even pleasant on hot days! And yes, even in the middle of a hot summer day, you can find some coolness in Pastré. For the athletes, there is a fitness trail, a tree line, games for children and even a riding school. And it is of course a very popular place to stroll in Marseille.

THE PALAIS LONGCHAMP.
The ‘Palais Longchamp’ is a must-see in Marseille: with a beautiful surrounding park, this historical monument was built to bring water to the city and is a true architectural achievement.
In 1835, a cholera epidemic hit the Phocaean city because of a water shortage. After this tragedy, the architect Franz Mayor de Montricher – educated at the very prestigious Ponts et Chaussées – was chosen to implement a project dating back to the 16th century: the excavation of an 85km canal to bring water from the Durance river all the way to Marseille.

After 10 years of hard work, 18 aqueduct bridges were built to bring drinkable water to Marseille. The architect Henry Espérandieu – the famous builder of the Notre-Dame Basilica – staged the arrival of water on the Longchamp plateau, a striking architectural monument from 1682 to 1869.

BEAUTIFUL MUSEUM IN MARSEILLE.
I really enjoyed the museum, the tour is made in a unique and amazing way. The audio guides are available in multiple languages.
They show a short film after the tour of the replica caves and then they have some pretty amazing replicas of pre historic animals and facts.
The parking is very close to the museum, overall it's a very pleasant experience and I would highly recommend it.

OLD CHARITY CENTRE.
The idea of an almshouse for the poor, dedicated to Notre-Dame, mère de Charité (Our Lady, Mother of Charity), was originally conceived in 1622;[2] but it was not until 1640, that a suitable plot of land was acquired, with the first pensioners admitted in the following year.[3] Although the foundation stone was laid in that year, construction commenced only in 1671, following a grand plan of the architect Pierre Puget. It was not completed until 1749, construction being prolonged as the result of reductions to the project imposed by the aldermen of Marseille. The central chapel was erected between 1679, and 1704. Although Puget died in 1694, that part of the project was completed under the direction of his son, François.

HISTORICAL FORT SAINT-JEAN.
Fort Saint-Jean (French pronunciation: [fɔʁ sɛ̃ʒɑ̃]) is a fortification in Marseille, built in 1660 by Louis XIV at the entrance to the Old Port. Since 2013, it has been linked by two foot-bridges to the historical district Le Panier and to the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations; the latter being the first French national museum to be located outside Paris.

BEAUTIFUL LANDMARK IN MARSEILLE.
Part of the earlier, much smaller cathedral still remains, alongside the new cathedral. It was built in the 12th century in a simple Romanesque style. The eclectic style is characteristic of the 19th century.
Two bays of the nave were demolished in the 1850s, when the new cathedral was built. What remains is the choir and one bay of the nave. It is commonly referred to as the "Vieille Major".[1] The composer Charles Desmazures was organist at the old cathedral.

COZY RESTAURANT IN MARSEILLE.
Brasserie with a harborside terrace, serving grilled fish, seafood & classic bouillabaisse soups.
During our visit to Marseille, we made a stop at this place specifically to try the famous bouillabaisse soup. The location itself is quite pleasant, offering a nice view of the harbor, and the overall atmosphere is delightful. The waitstaff were exceptionally friendly and polite, providing a welcoming experience.
We opted for the bouillabaisse for two, priced at 69 euros per person. The portions were impressively generous, served in two rounds. The first round consisted of just the soup, while the second included both the fish and the soup. The food was enjoyable, although it became apparent to someone familiar with the taste of truly fresh fish that what we had was not as fresh as it could have been. However, it was still acceptable.

A MUST SEE ABBEY WHILE IN MARSEILLE.
The crypts of the abbey contains artefacts indicating the presence of a quarry that was active during the Greek period and later became a necropolis from 2 BC onward until Christian times.
In 415, Christian monk and theologian John Cassian, having come from the monasteries of Egypt, founded two monasteries at Marseille— the Abbey of Saint Victor for men in the south of the Vieux-Port, as well as the Abbey of Saint Sauveur the other for women in the south of Place de Lenche.

BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURE IN MARSEILLE.
Notre-Dame de la Garde (literally: Our Lady of the Guard), known to local citizens as la Bonne Mère (French for 'the Good Mother'), is a Catholic basilica in Marseille, France, and the city's best-known symbol. The site of a popular Assumption Day pilgrimage, it is the most visited site in Marseille.[1] It was built on the foundations of an ancient fort at the highest natural point in Marseille, a 149 m (489 ft) limestone outcropping on the south side of the Old Port of Marseille.

Time to visit Marseille
Despite being the second most populous city in France after Paris, Marseille is not usually on most travellers' list of must-visit cities in France. However, this oldest city in France, founded circa 600 BC, has some characters that make a visit worthwhile.
One might visit the city to watch the local team, Olympique de Marseille play in the Stade Vélodrome (or Orange Vélodrome) or come for the smell you can find in the Savon de Marseille (traditional hard soap made from vegetable oils that has been produced here for 600 years). However, some might also treat this as a gateway to the famous region of Provence!
I certainly love the smell of Provence and Marseille soap, but not the Pieds paquets (stewed sheep's feet and stuffed sheep's tripe). I am sorry. :(

Visiting Marseille - France 🇫🇷
Marseille is a port city in southern France. It is a touristic destination with a mediterranean vibe. You can enjoy good food with ocean view.
Walking on the streets is fun as there are many landmarks such as Cathedrals, museums, parks and a beautiful port called The Vieux Port (Old port in English).
I came to Marseille for a day trip but I would recommend at least to spend two nights to experience the city without rushing all time.
The sea is stunning, crystal clear waters with wonderful weather.
